@@razzbeatz4909 a ground squirrel is not the same thing as a pocket gopher. I have both, and am about to do battle with both (which is why I'm scouring KZbin videos on the topic). Pocket gophers don't leave open holes like that, but ground squirrels do. Pocket gophers leave a crescent/horseshoe shaped mound of dirt.
@IcarustheSquirrel.3 жыл бұрын
Some people don't know this, but if you see a gopher mound, that dirt is the most nutrient untapped dirt you'll find, which makes it perfect for gardens or potted plants. A single gopher can shovel two tons of soil to the surface in a year, giving new nutrient dense matieral to plants. The pocket gopher also has the most endurance of any other gopher in the United states, and they are naturally excellent swimmers (hence how it shot up the water jug).

My Dad detested gophers intensely and never passed up an opportunity to get a gopher. As he was a locomotive engineer for the railroad, he always had flares (used for signals) and would put a lit one in the hole and seal up the opening. Then he watched the yard for the one who always gets away, out the gophers back door. Another favorite method was water. But he used a garden hose, burying it in the hole by sealing it with dirt - then turning the water on. With both methods After awhile we kids were all recruited to watch for a gopher (including our dog, Herman). Usually one popped up, drenching wet and tried for a dash across the grass for safety. My Dad would spring into action with his shovel in hand, and bring it down on the dashing squirrel! I so wish we had video in those days! It was terrible for the gopher, but intensely rewarding to my Dad!

It's about dirt displacement not that they dig in the foundation. A small family of gophers can remove enough dirt that your foundation cracks and sinks. The only way to stop that is kill/relocate them. To stop that would take footings about 15 ft deep. The cost of would be massive so it's far cheaper to kill/relocate.

That is not a gopher, or a pocket gopher. That's a ground squirrel, also called a chipmunk. I've seen someone catch an actual gopher this way, but it's never worked for me.
@Equismaximus4 жыл бұрын
I have been fighting pocket gophers for over 20 years and the water trick seldom works. Areas with established tunnels are extensive and the gopher can go in many directions. The best traps are the black plastic ones by by Victor. You just put them near the front of the hole you dig out and put a piece of cardboard over your digging to block light and wait. The Victor 0625 traps work the best and are the easiest to set. They have a hole in the end that lets a little light in making the gopher think there is a small hole that he will attempt to plug. The sad part is that it kills them so quick. A more torturous and inhumane strangulation method would be more rewarding. I want to see the bastards suffer like they make me suffer. I am working on a 15,000 volt Neon sign transformer trap today that will electrocute them. You will know when you got him because of the burning fur and flesh. Another method to use is a model rocket engine with a nichrome wire fuse. When it goes off the rocket engine burns their face off. This too is very very nice and rewarding. I have Irrigation berms that these bastards just decimate and I have lost hundreds of thousands of gallons of water because of Pocket Gophers. They are nothing more than Rats and need to be exterminated. There is something that warms the heart when you still catch a live one and you can snip off their legs and let them go.

I'm having a hell of a time catching a gopher now, every time I try to drown him out with the hose ive had no success. Then there will be days where there's no activity then a fresh mound of dirt
@derpinbird11807 жыл бұрын
Its a bit dark but i heard the way is to find a hose that wont melt on a car exhaust and just pump exhaust gas down the hole. It kills but it doesn't hurt thats why monoxide is so dangerous
@ayzoid99807 жыл бұрын
Sometimes they have multiple holes so flooding won't do anything
@derpinbird11807 жыл бұрын
Yeah i think this sort of thing only works if you have really clay heavy soil where i live even if you tipped that much water down a hole it would just sink through the dirt in seconds
@WildBikerBill7 жыл бұрын
@ Derpin Bird In modern cars there is very little CO. There is also very little O2. What kills them is the exhaust is almost all N2 and CO2, neither of which support life. So it's like suffocating.

Yes, if this superior animal wants to keep his territory free of smaller animals that he considers pests, then by all means he is free to do so. Millions of years of evolution haven't made me unable to be sympathetic or empathize with animals, but if I want gophers out of my yard so-fucking-be it. Bigger dogs will fight or harasss smaller dogs that intrude on their territory, this is no different.

Draycole You can find a million videos of dogs having fun on this site that don't involve them tearing small animals to shreds. I'm not arguing against their natural instincts, animals are gonna do what animals are gonna do. What I can't understand is why you're so eager to watch them rip apart a frightened little gopher, and why hearing its screams of fear and overwhelming pain counts as wholesome entertainment to you. People who get their rocks off to stuff like that are often the kind of people who are hiding some horrifying secrets under their floorboards.
