How to catch and clean crab - How to setup a crab trap

A short video about how I setup my crab trap. The best time for catching crab in Oregon is from September to December, this was filmed last August 2018 and you can see the crabbing was already starting to get good.

Sup PK, I'm one of your new subs. Love your vids. Keep 'em coming. I typically live in Birch Bay, WA, but am away at the moment. I've done a lot of crabbing in and around Birch Bay, and miss the hell out of it. Back in the 2016 season, we ended up with a total of 40 lbs of cooked, cleaned, and deshelled crab meat over the course of about 6 boating trips. I've got 6 of those type traps I bought used off of commercial fisherman. They work great, and last forever with proper maintenance. Sadly in Birch Bay, at least half of the crabs caught are females, which we have to throw back. It seems nearly all of your were male. Nice catch! Have fun out there, and be safe. Peace! -Trystian

Just did some crabbing today of south jetty Florence. Not one keeper unfortunately, all were so small. Maybe next month

My friend and I dropped 4 pots near the mouth of the jetty in Florence. We got skunked in 3 hours. This was late September too when it should be good crabbing. Odd year this is.

Use the edge of a 5 gallon bucket to clean the crabs the same way and have a place to throw the discarded parts.

Hey PK enjoy watching your channel I've learned quite a bit. I had a question about the polyform buoys you're using in this video. Do you feel that because its round and not the bullet shape of a traditional crab buoy that it creates drag and moves your crab pot in with the incoming and outgoing tides more? Or Does it pretty much stay where you drop them?

I don't think the roundness of the buoy causes too much drag - definitely not enough to drag the pots. The depth of the water would be a bigger factor because deeper water will cause more drag on the rope, while shallow water causes less drag. It's like standing in waste deep creek flowing really fast vs standing in ankle high water with the same water movement.

Yes, there are crabbing piers in every bay in Oregon. You can also try the jetties using a crab hawk or crab snare.

Over the edge buy a boat, crab traps, fishing poles, and stay away from Portland..... (I lived in Oregon for 20 years and still visit relatives there regularly).

In Oregon you need a shellfish permit to catch crabs. I don't sell the crabs for a living.

Oregon Fish and Wildlife says you can't mutilate the crabs prior to landing. If law enforcement sees you doing this, you're going to be fined.

you cant mutilate to the point of not being able to identify sex and size. That is why he is he kept the shell. He is perfectly legal here. Make sure to read the regs completely.

Hey PK or any other Oregonians: does anyone know of any good crabbing spots that are on fixed docks/piers aside from in Newport? I’m in a wheelchair so the ramps to most floating docks are way too steep at low tide. I’m tired of the Newport pier 💁🏻‍♀️

I know these bays have a fixed dock: Florence, Winchester, Tillamook, Siletz, (Waldport has one too but not sure if it's fixed). Good luck.

The one in Waldport is an attached floating dock where the crabbing is good. But there is a small portion, at the top that is a static dock that people crab off of.

There is also a dock in Garibaldi that you can crab off of, it is pretty accessible.

Florence is probably your best bet. There's a dock with tons of room, and it's about 20-25' deep off of it

Thanks everyone! The only other place I’ve been was Waldport and that was a floating dock so when I went to leave at low tide, I had to have people shove me up the ramp. I probably should have tried the top section.
