In this episode, Matt Scotch and I are going to show you how to catch a boatload of crappie, even in wintertime. Then we'll demonstrate the proper way to filet this species before Matt puts his chef skills to work and shows us the best way to both fry and bake these tasty fish.
COMMENT BELOW and tell me your favorite way to cook crappie! Or, post any questions you have about tournament bass fishing, and I'll get these rockstars to answer your questions!

Night fishing for crappie is very rewarding. Their main feeding times are typically between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. with the peak hours usually being between 12-2. Would love to see a night time crappie fishing vid. I just started crappie fishing last spring and I absolutely love it now. Right up there with speckled trout fishing. And here in Louisiana both are great!

I’m not sure there’s a hard rule like that for any species. Depends on a million factors from moon phase to what forage is in the body of water
@justinchamlee3327
@justinchamlee3327 4 жыл бұрын
Just what I've read about the species. I've found quite a few articles saying they are a nocturnal and/or low light feeding fish. And around here that seems to hold true. Although when they're spawning it doesn't seem to matter a whole lot how light or dark it is.

At 16:54 blacknose or magnolia is when the eggs get a certain warmer temperature and are sterilized naturally. They breed these specifically for a lot of state county lakes. But they don't have a thought about spawning in their heads at all. So it's a fact they get big real quick. I had one nail a 5 inch fluke

Love me some Crappie fishing and eating. I fish Lake Lewisville Texas mainly and the hot ticket here is two Shinee Hineee 1/8th ounce Jigs orange head, silver body and Chart tail. Getting a limit on them in about 12-16ft of water over brush or rock bottom is easy from the Prowler 13. Some great table fare! The Blue Cat action is outta control here too.

Robert Field 100% agree there’s a learning curve but if you’re getting paid to fillet someone’s fish you should know what you’re doing that guy didn’t charge you and still tried his best I think some commercial ships and charters are wasteful cause they get paid the same but someone who is filleting their own fish is more likely to try harder to avoid the waste of food and life

For twelve filets mix 2 cups of all purpose flour to 1/4 cup of Morton’s season all poultry seasoning to 1 tablespoon of garlic powder, and a half tablespoon of ground pepper, no egg wash on this one, let filets sit in ice water for a couple hours before preparing and take them out of ice water and gently pat with paper towels leaving some moisture but not wet, then deep fry in canola oil on high for about 4 - 5 minutes depending on thickness of filets, and if you come to Maryland and fish with Me I’ll share the dipping sauce recipe also, I’m the local eastern Chesapeake bay die hard one more cast multigenerational fish nut....

Man you guys just made me hungry! I think Crappie and Walleye are the two best freshwater fish. Around here that one with the stripe is called Magnolia, not sure where that came from but it is what it is. :) Many times I've Crappie fishing, left a spot that slowed, only to come back later and tear them up. Great video as usual!

Interesting, Matt said a lot of people down here call that a racing stripe. Wonder what causes it. Super fun day, thanks for watching!

Never seen someone wearing waders and a lifejacket before... lol what would happen if you rolled your kayak? Sink or float?
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 4 жыл бұрын
Waders don’t cause you to sink when they fill up. That is a myth. Water isn’t heavier than water. They just make it hard to lift yourself out of the water. I would float, and i know because I’ve tested it in the summer.

Always enjoy your videos. And really glad to see that Lightning Kayak on the water. But myself, living out here on the California coast, it would be really great to see you get that out on some roughter water to see how they are going to handle ocean conditions. Nearly bought one when they launched but couldn't find any videos or comments about how they handle the kind of water that everyone jumps into Hobies to fish. Hopefully soon we can see you on some open water in that LIghtning. Other than that, now I have to hit the lake for some crappie this week. Making my mouth water. Great vid.

Nice fishing! That slaw is very similar to Haitian Pikliz (peak-leez), except we usually make it a lot more spicier, add lime juice & a few secret ingredients! 😁 I love Tony Chachere's! ❤️ It's right up there for me with Season All, Lawry's & Old Bay! Great video!

Great video. I tried the baked crappie but must be missing something. In the video the fish fillets look wet when they are turned over (like butter). I seasoned, floured, egg wash, and panko. 7 minutes per side. Unless I missed it the temperature is never mentioned. Was any oil put on foil? Thanks in advance for any guidance you can give me.
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 4 жыл бұрын
Matt says 420 degrees is what he did but could vary depending on your oven. Oil in the pan, then once he flips them he tosses some butter in there as well.
