Great video. The California Dawn has a great reputation. In the early 80's I got hooked on fishing the SF Bay for Striped Bass and California halibut using live bait on a few different charter boats. They all used the same method to present the live anchovy placing the hook through the lower jaw and up through the upper jaw. It is a method that is easy to learn and it does work. When I purchased my Skipjack 25 ft Sport cruiser I experimented with alternative ways to place live anchovies on a bait hook. I found that the live baits were "more lively" and the rods that were presenting the alternative method definitely had more action and hookups. The alternative is to place the hook horizontally just beneath the skin behind the head (shoulder) of the bait. This allows the bait to swim more freely and attract more bites from predators. When a live anchovy is hooked vertically up from the chin and out through the nose the bait is severely inhibited from freely swimming and is constantly pulled towards the rod. Presenting an alternative to established traditions is most often resisted. I use what works best after trying both ways and there is no doubt in my observation that what I am suggesting works better. I hope you will try the alternative and enjoy the results. As a side note I have found the alternative works better even more obviously when fishing live anchovies for Albacore.

You didn't read closely enough...It doesn't say don't eat stripers. It says stripers MAY contain mercury and that you shouldn't eat them regularly especially if you are a pregnant woman. In reality most of the mercury in a striper is concentrated in the liver and other internal organs....Striper meat is fine. I've been eating it for 40 years....Cal Kellogg

Striper fillets are fine just cut the darker red meat off with a nice sharp knife like a bubba blade or xtra sharp fillet knife. As for cooking striper fillets cook well with moist heat applications verses pan frying as stripers are leaner on fat content.

Awesome video. Is there any extra precautions to take in eating fish from SF Bay? Any worry of heavy metal/chemical contamination? I live and fish in Monterey Bay but moving to Vallejo soon and curious about fishing the SF, San Pablo bays. Thank you in advance.

just read the signs and you'll be fine. that's pretty much the best advice I can give you. I live in Vacaville and I go out to emeryville near Berkley sometimes. they have a sign posted EAT THIS. on one side and the other says this. DON'T EAT THIS. stripers are one of the fish that's on the don't eat side. lol

why are the halibut down there so small? up in bc if you hook onto one its unlikely to be under 15lb and most of the time its between 30-90lb
