Thank you for all the videos Rod! Would you also consider doing a video on recognising fish signs and general "fish sense"? All the great gear in the world won't help if the fish just aren't there or just aren't biting due to X, Y, or Z. I have found that getting advise in this area tends to be frustrating as it usually boils down to "you just know".

We once were on a two man kayak and fishing just out of the range of shore anglers. The water was so clear you could actually see the trout at the bottom of the lake so I pointed to the area for the shore anglers but of course, they couldn't reach the area by casting. Meanwhile we were bringing them in one after another. I saw your original video years back when you started using 10lb. braid so switched to that. It was a great move. I now use 6-8 lb. yellow braid almost exclusively, even on my saltwater light setups. It's nice to be able to see where the line is in the water. No, it doesn't scare the fish away.

Definitely a game changer! I used to have this presumption that braided line is more environmentally unfriendly than monofilament line, I have no idea why I started thinking that. Once I tried out braid, that was the end of the mono really. It's just so durable, with very little maintenance and stays on the spool for years, plus my landing success has gone way up because of it.

Thank you Rod, this was awesome. I will add that chronomids aren't the only flys that work on spinning/bait rods! It's also an awesome way to get fly fishing without having to learn how to cast, which I think is the hardest thing when you're getting started.

I'm a pretty big guy and fush from a not so big kayak. Is there a fish finder you would recommend? It would have to be small enough have built in batteries as I kinda max out the weight limits of my boat lol

I tried this from a boat at Lake Siskiyou. Spinning rod, 4x tippet and a sizez 14 red and white zebra midge. Caught a 15in trout. Lost a nice one the day before with the same set up. Great video!

Thanks Rod. I was wondering about getting to the trout in the deep water during hot weather so perfect timing! My concern would be getting snagged though, with the hook being below the weight and touching bottom first then reeling in to make depth. Could this cromie tackle be set up like a drop shot instead? Perhaps even using stoppers to capture the line with the cromie on it and make it depth adjustable? Thanks!

The chance of snagging up would be slim to none because where you are anchoring on is usually snag-less. Chironomids emerge from mud flats so you want to find that substrate rather than weeds or bottoms covered with debris. 🙂 Thanks for checking out the video!

With the weight being above the swivel I find that the leader line with the hook wraps around the weight and creates tangle. Slowly dropping the set up helps rather than just dropping it down to depth right away.

That definitely helps to avoid the tangles for sure, but I actually have not had that issue. I think mostly because I am using a pretty light weight (1/8oz at most in this case) so it's going down pretty slowly already so that has not been a concern.

Great video Rod as always! There are a lot of people stating how fly fishing tapers off in the summer time, but with this setup, it appears you can fish it right through the summer despite the higher temperatures. Does this setup work for most interior lakes? Thanks

This setup would work anywhere really, and generally better for deeper water. For shallower (15ft or less), go with the float fishing setup. The fishing can be good throughout the summer as long as there are chironomids hatching, otherwise like you said you could use other flies, lures, bait etc with the same method to match whatever they are feeding on. I was considering giving it one more crack for a day but I think I'm going to stay home. Tunkwa just got the evacuation order and so did Red Lake a few days ago, but the lakes around Merritt should still be fine and you'll probably have reasonably good fishing. I love the indicators too, but the takes on these rods straight down are pretty exciting too... Now I can't decide what I like more.

Hey Rod, off topic question here but since you're a very knowledgeable fisherman and you seem to be a reasonable human I'm curious what your position is on this topic. Many people are saying to kill invasive Bass when you catch them in Pitt Meadows. I personally haven't caught many but I have always released them myself. Am I doing the right thing?

With non-native/invasive/introduced species, there isn't a regulation which requires you to kill them. If you choose to kill them, you'd have to make sure they are not wasted (ie. eat them). While their presence has an impact on native species for sure, removing a few by angling doesn't really make a difference at this point so it's fine to release them if you choose to.

@@FishingwithRod Yes I would imagine some sort of a large scale systematic removal of the invasive species would be done by some organization or increased retention limits could help eliminate the problem. Personally I wouldn't eat the Bass from those waters and I wouldn't kill a fish I don't intend on eating unless someone could explain a legitimate reason why it's important. I'm going to continue releasing them since I agree with your assessment. Thank you for your response and all of your awesome videos!

Hey Rod amazing content as always! I have a question I'd like to run by you. Do you tend to use cork sealer like U-40 for your corked rods and do you have an opinion on cork sealer in general? Asking because I'm always torn between choosing the soft feel of an unsealed cork or the more ridged feel of a sealed one; I gravitate towards sealing new rods myself. I'd love to hear what you have to say on the subject!

Hey Jacob, yep the Tekota counter reel is designed to go with the Talora rod for trolling. If you want to use a faster casting rod for casting, it's best to go with the SLX reel or other low profile baitcasters.

I am going for the monster brook and brown trout no one can catch in my local pond any ideas? So far my bait caster with a Mepps 3 Perch on it has worked the best to attracted the biggest yearlings, but no biggins. My next idea is a slide float to dropshot rig 6" off bottom in the center of the pond.

That's a deadly method for sure. It's very similar to a Japanese method called OTOSHIKOMI. Light leaders, small weights and just a small swivel. For baits we use live crab or muscles on a fly type reel off ocean surf breakers. Typical stuff is bream and bass. The key for this method even yours is super light leaders, don't skimp on this!!! A good net is a must. Deff gonna try this method out for big trout.

@@FishingwithRod Yup, I knew it was rooted from that method!!! In Japan they have this killer method where they make balls of bait then put their shrimp inside. Mark the bottom like you do then drop it down. The ball falls apart and the single shrimp is exposed with zero weight or resistance. Oh ROD, not to my wifes delight I'm bringing all my rods over on a container this summer. 2 rods I have are hand crafted bamboo rods for just this kinda fishing. Will be fun to try this out. Oh one more thing I'll add. For basic jigging we usually use color braided lines, each color marks 10m. So really I could even use this method to mark where my bait is.

Compared to species such as bass, minnows, etc, yes trout, or salmonid species in general do better in colder water. Cold to a point of course, there is a optimal range which keeps them happy, somewhere around 10 to 15C, +/- a few.

Depth sounder also "must have" for navigating in ocean fog as aid to compass and GPS.You are a wise fisherman matching flex in fishing rod to species and size of fish.Flex in rod keeps head shaking fish on hook.Many fishermen never catch on to that. CHEERS from a much cooler SOOKE!!!
