-As you are dealing with a 10+ year old car rust is the real problem. Before you order everything buy new nuts/bolts incl the 24mm axle bolt as it is a one time stretch bolt. The three 13mm bolts holding the strut unwind halfway and then get stuck in the rusted nuts as the ends corrode. If these don't come out you are grinding them off if the rubber mount or spring is broken. The CV axle gets corroded into the hub, loosen the old 24mm hub bolt one or 2 turns and hit it with a big hammer, then a sledge. If it doesn't move the axle put the new bolt in and retighten. As you will need to remove the axle from the gearbox side and the hub carrier, you can get one from a wreckers or ebay as a complete unit, but you can still drive the car whist you sort this out. I did not have this problem, but alot people have. Then once you get the strut out. The 21mm/allen holding the strut wont budge. I broke two 600mm breaker bars on this job at various points and had to grind the anti roll bar off. The strut bolt snapped when I retightened it. I had to do this repair as the spring had corroded and snapped, this destroyed the rubber/bearing at the top leaving the remains rattling around on the dust cover. Daunting though this may sound i only spent €150 euros using Autodoc on two 356mm springs, two struts and an Anti roll bar link. The link was €68 at VW, €13 at Autodoc. I had already bought the bolts, dust cover and upper mount in the false belief that it would all unbolt and refit like in the video. But you can see that through the magic of television he is unbolting fresh bolts or parts. I will do the other side once I get it through the MOT.

This is the worst job I have ever done on a car. Top tip get a garage to do it. Also when u go the other side you have to take off the wiper motor and linkage to get to the top of the shock strut.

Thank you for your feedback! You are right, structurally there are differences between the sides of the replaced part because of which the replacement procedure is significantly different. In our new videos, we will definitely try to take this into account. Best regards, Autodoc Team !

I agree Aiden, wish I had seen your comment before I started..... every stage has been a problem and I'm only half way thro...… any tips on getting the back not off the top of the strut welcome … this video is misleading …. it makes every step look easy and totally missed out the stage of taking the wiper motor and linkage out …

@@robadams3558 the worst bit mate is getting the strut out and in of the wheel hub it's at least a 2 man job. Don't even attempt to do it yourself. It took me 2 hours of hitting the strut with a hammer while trying to pry open the hub sleeve with a crow bar.

Btw I had mine on a two poster ramp with a gearbox Jack supporting the wheel hub and I still found it a nightmare. Good luck though. Ps the back springs are a piece of cake if u need to do them too

Good video, but be careful showing copper grease spray getting onto the brake discs and then not cleaning off.

I do not agree with those metallic brackets that put pressure on the spring, they should have rubber protection on them or any other elastic surface protection, they scratch the paint off the springs and you get a broken spring in a year or two. It happened to me.
