You failed to mention with fairings and if the nut happens to be rusted lol then when trying to pull it's like giving childbirth lol Had to WD40 nut on starter and using a vise grip. After much determination, boom off! Currently on the pull and no not ten minutes. However the use of a hammer on the other side by my son and my receiving the starter was delightful. Felt like giving birth to a new starter lol. Installed but did not start right away. Charging battery and will see If no problem after. Otherwise grrrr. But, shout out to you for helping me with the basics. 😘💯🔥 Going for a ride now!!!

Hi great video. I have a 1g sv650. how do I check to see if the ground is properly secure on the bike
@svcruza2 жыл бұрын
Just make sure when you reassemble components that the connectors are completely on (usually listen for a click) and make sure there is a clean or (shiny) surface on the wire connector and the nuts or bolts to ensure a good solid ground.

Awesome tutorial. I've got a question - should I get the oil engine out before the operation?
@svcruza3 жыл бұрын
Good question....thanks for asking. The answer is no you dont have to, because the oil level is low in the engine casing and wont flow out of the starter access. Note: when you do take the starter out, there will be just a little bit of oil dripping out so make sure you have something under the bike to avoid a mess. I hope this helps.

@@svcruza If there is a lot of oil coming out, do i need to replace it?
@svcruza3 жыл бұрын
@@jorstad17 excellent question, I ran into a similar situation, the starter is still good but it leaks oil. Simple fix, I bought a starter rebuild kit(super cheap) and I replaced the O-ring on the starter and that worked like a charm. The kits are like $15 on Ebay.

Do you know if the Suzuki SV650 Starter Motor is the same as the HYOSUNG GTR 650 Starter Motor?

Not sure if this gets noticed but, my issue is - Fresh batteries, all check on pre-start procedures, but when I hit the start button, it always seems like it got a hard time cranking. It starts but it's always a guessing game coz sometimes it just sounds like it spins the motor a bit then it gets stuck. It sometimes comes to a point where I drain the battery coz it does that over and over again, and I don't wanna leave my bike at the gas station. Sometimes though, it starts like fking brand new.

@@arno_j16 are you currently having this problem?
@arno_j163 ай бұрын
@@svcruza yep. I got a k5 sv650. Could it be a starter issue? I took the starter off and tested it and it spins just fine though.
@svcruza3 ай бұрын
@@arno_j16 if your battery is at the required 12v and stable at 12v, then the next thing I would check is your grounds and your starter relay connections...if they aren't clean and shiny, the power cant travel through them at full capacity. Think of electrical wires as a steam or river that is flowing smoothly....once you start adding rocks and beaver dams, then it no longer smooth flowing. Now it's got resistance. Same with wire connections, if there is dirt or even corrosion on the terminals, the electricity cannot flow fast like its designed too....so check your connections and your grounds.
@arno_j163 ай бұрын
@@svcruza I recently changed the relay. Had the terminals sanded shiny to make sure no grimes blocking the current. The ground I’m not sure though. They’re supposed to be the mountings for the starter motor, right? Thanks for following this through by the way.

I bought a cheap Chinese one and it seemed to work fine but after half an hour riding the gear shift became really stiff, something to do with how the starter meshes with the flywheel? Like the teeth on the cheap starter are manufactured wrong?
@svcruza Жыл бұрын
No, they are completely separate from each other. You might want to closely inspect your clutch cable and the linkage. I had this happen 3 times, each time was a different reason but same result. Either we couldn't pull in the clutch handle or it was just binding up making it difficult. Make sure the cable is healthy clean and straight with no kinks because that will affect its function. Check the clutch lever pivot point and see if its dirty, corroded, or just too tight. If so, clean with soap and water and lubricate with penetrating oil or WD-40. If all that checks out to be good, you're really not going to like this next possible reason which would point to a failing clutch assembly. This mean you may have to get new clutch plates. What's the year, make, model, and mileage of the bike?

@@svcruza thanks, seems odd that it only started after I changed starter motor, just coincidence? It is a 2006 DL650 Vstrom.

When I throttle my lights get brighter and then the lights begin to dim when I release the throttle? Is this just the battery or the starter.
@svcruza2 жыл бұрын
I have a few possibilities that may be occurring. I will say that I doubt that the starter has anything to do with it. A. Check all ground wires. A poor ground will result in voltage drop so make sure there is no corrosion or rust on the terminals or connections. B. Stator failure is most likely your situation. A motorcycle stator is basically the bikes alternator, if it fails, it no longer generates electricity for spark therefore the bike loses power, spikes in power under load (acceleration or revs), or ceases function altogether. I hope this helps brother.

Where did you buy the starter motor? Are the cheap ones on ebay a good option, from china? Any brand you suggest?
@svcruza4 жыл бұрын
I bought mine from the Suzuki dealer which their products come from Japan, not China. Dont buy cheap components if they are vital to the bikes functionality, you will be wasting your money. It may be expensive but its worth it.

pretty sure i have this problem when i try to start the bike it makes a weird noise like it’s hitting something or catching up on something. didn’t realise what it could be so i did it a few times, how long does it take before the flywheel teeth start grinding down to the point it needs replacing?
@svcruza Жыл бұрын
Honestly I wouldn't wait around to find out if it's chewing up my flywheel teeth since that is a rather expensive repair it is so much easier to take out the starter and inspect the teeth yourself versus taking that Gamble

I screwed something up... guess I shouldn’t be working on bikes lol. Put it back together and hit the start button, but the starter just spins and doesn’t turn the engine. Any ideas what I did?
@svcruza2 жыл бұрын
Ok there are a few things that are happening. 1. The starter was installed crooked and not allowing the starter gear to reach out and contact the flywheel to turn the motor. Double check your installation (take your time). 2. The starter solenoid in the starter is stuck or faulty. If it's a new starter remember, (just because it's new dont mean its good). To see if its closed try this...take a hammer, big wrench, or something similar and hit the starter casing to see if it will jar it free. If the starter is an old one, it could have carbon buildup on the solenoid so by hitting it with a hammer breaks up the carbon inside allowing functionality again. Note: if hitting it with a hammer or wrench works, then it means that starter will need to be replaced asap. I hope this helps.

OEM starter is $411. What brand did you end up getting that was 40-50?

I bought the Caltric starter on Ebay. It was a good starter and had no issues after the swap out. There is one thing I highly recommend doing before installing the new starter to prevent future oil leaks and that's to install a better O-ring on the starter.

My 99 SV650 wont turn over after a new battery. It just clicks. Would changing the starter be a possible solution?
@svcruza4 жыл бұрын
Yes. That click you hear is the starter relay. First check all your power and ground connections from the battery to the starter and make sure they are tight. Then take a wrench or a hammer and hit the starter to see if the starter solenoid is just stuck. Then try to start the bike. If it starts the bike, then the starter needs to be replaced.

Brother I sold that bike 2 years ago so I dont remember if you would have to replace the stator cover because if I'm not mistaken the starter goes into the stator cover. If not, then yes you need to replace the casing that is cracked. Also I buy all my parts from 2 locations. 1. My number one shopping place is Ebay, there are a lot of highly reputable retailers and high performance stores that do most of their business through Ebay with lower if not wholesale prices, opposed to ridiculous dealership prices. 2. My second most successful location is Partzilla.com . TIP: I highly recommend you upgrade the o-ring on the starter to a thicker one to prevent oil leaks. I ended up having a leak after this video was released and went to ace hardware and got a better o-ring. Oil It before installing it! Hope this helps dude.
