I just done this on my 20 year old vw t5... It was horrendous and I never want to do it again. It reduced me to tears nearly. What should of been an easy job turned into a nightmare 😂

Next, hold the ball joint shaft from the front with an Allen key. Loosen the nut with a open ended spanner or a box end wrench.

Never had luck with this normal way of doing it.

The allan key will destroy the hex in most cases. You can do this when the ball joint is new, not when the thread is old and rusty.

It’s so fiddly on astra J, even after taking the bolt out the bush them self are hard to pull out, and even after you pull them out some of rubber stuck on the bar and you have to cut with sharp knife.

Yeah, did mine yesterday. Faster than expected. I have the 1.4t engine which is small so there s a lot of space in the engine bay, I unscrewed the front bolts of the brackets from the top with a long bar and 13 key. The back bolts of the brackets are mayhem, there s no space for anything else other than a clicket spanner. Even with that you cannot unscrew those two bolts completely because their heads will hit the firewall. So those I just unscrewed them 1 cm to release the bracket with the bush. Fir the separation from the bar I used a chisel and a hammer and popped it right out. Then I used a grinding metal bar to clean the remains of rubber - which were not so many or sticky as my bushes had 12 years and 160k km. So pretty worned out. It helped me a lot that I also replaced the control arms, steering inner and outer tie/rod and anti roll links. So I had some space to manouver. I would say cca 1h each to get it out and put new one.
