Great! About being fuzzy lining up the valve with the logo: not just symmetry/optical! It is so that after you found a thorn/nail/screw in your tire you can now line up the tube with the tire and find the puncture in the tube because you have now narrowed down the area where the puncture possibly can be!

for sure. but i always check the ENTIRE tire and tube to ensure i didn't miss a bit of debris or a small tear. but yes, does help with that thanks for sharing!

So helpful! I bought my 1979 girl's red 10 speed in Anchorage when I was 22yo. It has the original tires. Rotted out long ago. Will now see if I can tackle replacing them. I live in a tiny northern town in Minnesota and hope to ride around here this summer.

I remember trying to put Gatorskins on my road bike for the winter and how much I struggled getting the last bit of bead. It took me, my friend and a couple of zip ties to get the job done. They're still on my bike 3 years later because I just can't face the idea of that struggle again yet. My WTB's on my gravel bike are SO much easier I was shocked.
@radbikeadventure
@radbikeadventure 3 жыл бұрын
Yea, Gatorskins are notoriously tough to get on/off! Thankfully don't get flats with them very often (if at all!). Ok, but how was the zip tie used??
@Brian-qv1ir
@Brian-qv1ir 3 жыл бұрын
@@radbikeadventure When I was nearly finished the job I found that I was chasing the last part of the bead around the rim as I tried to get it on. So I used zip ties just past where the bead was still out to hold it in place while I pushed as hard as I could to get the last bit of bead on the rim. I saw the technique used for some marathons on a video. I can link it here if you want me to.

Good video. There's all sorts of levers too, and some may work better for you than other. My personal faves are some super cheap ones that came in a bulk pack of tubes I bought. They're thinner than my nicer pair, and just seem to get tires off better. Putting the logo at the valve stem is a good way to help identify puncture locations later. Helps find something that may be in your rim or tube. Saved me a lot of headache since I started doing that.

good deal presenting the 700c and 29er being the same size! when I started cycling I was certainly unsure of this myself, and I felt like getting my 29er tires ordered was kinda like taking a bet loooool but they fit great on my 700s :)

If you’re a retro-grouch like moi who’s still using rim brakes, opening them before pulling the wheel makes life easier, ‘specially when installing wider tires. Also, rubbing a thin coating of talcum powder on a lightly inflated tube will help prevent it from pinching during seating and inflation. Nice vid! 👍🏻🤘🏻

Valve caps are good for stopping grit get into the valve core which can result in your tyre deflating because the core has got stuck with grit and is slowly letting air out.

@@radbikeadventure Twice. Tyres, one tubed, one tubeless, had gone down overnight. I removed the valve core, got rid of any dust, grit, reinstalled, pumped up the tyres and voila. Having a cap on also stops any small rocks, sticks etc that fly up and smash into the valve stem don't damage the valve core.

You should do a video on mounting a marathon plus tire, this is great for most but if you don't seat a plus right or use the inner wheel space you will never get the plus on, but the plus is only tires I use no other compairs

You can also pull the last section of bead over the rim using both palms. This technique allows you to use your finger tips to check for no tube pinch. Next time you come up to Bainbridge I'll show you the technique at the shop.
@rudy5360

I find using three tyre levers much easier. The first under the bead and lock onto a spoke, and then do the same a few spokes over. The third lever is then very easy to slide the bead over the rim.
@radbikeadventure
@radbikeadventure 3 жыл бұрын
I used to do that too but found one or two levers is always enough for me to get it off.

The thing about pushing the tires in from the opposite side where you are taking them off or putting on is that the bead goes into the middle of the rim. Since the middle is indented this effectively makes the diameter smaller. If you are putting on a tire and it is getting tight push from the opposite site to take the bead off the side (towards the center). You will find magically that it is easier to push on (and will go back when you inflate). Personally I like to inflate the inner tube more. That way I know that none of it is pinched. You can always deflate it.

Tan walls 4 lyf! Haha. And I’d definitely recommend going tubeless. Sometimes it will mount super easy sometimes it takes a few hours. If you can get an air compressor that would make it easy. I have a small tubeless charge tank and it works most of the time.

You should go tubeless, saves you headache during a rides & you can go slightly lower psi. I had 4 goat heads on a road ride & just pumped the tire & it was back to to normal with tubeless. The previous time I had similar issue I had to walk to my car as I ran out of tubes after multiple thorn flats(which half the group got that day at the same time). That tire looks a little too rounded & narrow on that rim as I am sure you know.
@radbikeadventure

@TranslateToEnglish

The downside of tubeless tires is that if they leak down too low the tires will loosen from the rim and a bicycle pump won't generate enough initial pressure to reset the tire.

very informative video.... ++ .......My personal technique for tyre removal is to start at the valve stem, allowing the tyre portion opposite the valve to bed deeper in the rim so the lever has more "bite" at the valve.... there's less chance of the lever biting the tube here (at the valve) & casuing a puncture (as the valve holds the tube in place)... lever off the tyre as you have done.... then with the second lever inset it under the tyre just near the point where the tyre hasn't as yet come above the rim, and lever more of the tyre off the rim..(do this again with a 3rd tyre lever {where the tyre is just under the rim} & the whole tyre removal is very easy)...this way you don't have to use any force to shove the lever further around the rim trying to "force" the tyre off..... it might save sore hands...... When putting tyre back on, do as you have done, but start opposite the vlave, again this gives the tyre & tube a bit more room in the wheel well as you work your way up either side & finish at the valve location..... PS the "valve retaining nut" on the vlave stops the tube tearing at the vlave when you put a huge amount of watts into the rear wheel on acceleration ......on motorcycles
