I"m a luthier that occasionally works on fiddles. I have a good friend who makes them, and when it came time for me to rehair my first bow, I asked him how hard it was. He said "Good f___ing luck!" Actually, like most things in the string instrument world, it's not hard to do. But it is super hard to do perfectly. I have done perhaps 8 and never have I achieved anything like Daniel's level of perffection. I always have loose hairs. Fortunately, these have been done for fiddlers that aren't as particular as a concert violinist. I come back to this video over and over, and lhe makes it looks so easy, but I tell myself that he's probably done a thousand. Thanks again, Daniel!

Wow Daniel, you make make changing bow hair alomst simple! I have two girls and they are both learning to play bowed instruents, one is learning the violin and the other is learning the viola. Their instruments were purchased from a 2nd hand store so I'm laerning restoration and repair. It has become a new hobby of mine. So I wanted to thank you for your informative and inspirational video. Thanks.

I came to this video to learn how hard it is to change the hair on a cello bow. I know this is just about changing the hair on a bow, but in watching this video, I came to realize that everything I do in life, I have been doing wrong. I want to move in with you, and thus, learn to live, vicariously, through you.

One of the best instructional videos I have seen. I am remote and to get a bow haired - not often.. It would be nice to be able to be able to tackle this job. I take care of my "fiddle" as far as maintenance. I am no expert, . I m not a business, just taking care of my own needs to be clear.. Today, I noticed one of my mainstay bows had loosened. I immediately cut the hair and will get it to my bow guy for a re hair.. HAD I seen this video.. I would have tightened the plug until I got to my bow guy.. I may tackle an old bow for fun now.. But one of the first things I must do is lose some weight.. Great tip.. :) Loved it!
@LegionareX6 жыл бұрын
I had followed the guide perfectly until 13:18, this step was so difficult for me and the tip would slip out of the hole and I could not plug it in as easily with the wood piece as you did.. I eventually ended up cutting too much bow hair off attempting to get the tip to fit, long story short my attempt was a total failure. Thank you for the guide, I will be attempting this again sometime in the future.

I reccomend watching Daniel and doing it yourself. I brought my grandfather's 200 year old French bow into a luthier in Portland.. He used my frog but switched sticks on me. I had taken pictures of the markings so it was easy to notice. He lied and there was nothing I could do about it. Don't trust with an expensive bow. If you watch this and do exactly what he does its easy.

Thank you for an amazing video. I would never have hoped to see such a masterful bow hair change ever. I'm sort of sad that I can't find real information about string instruments anywhere on the net. I've played the cello for decades but struggled to change the nut (what ever it's called) where the pin (again unknown term!) is screwed and had to take apart a bad carbon bow to learn the parts
