How To Change F150 Oil Pressure Sensor aka Oil Pressure Sending Unit

Today we are working on a 2002 Ford F150 V8 5.4L However this will apply to all the 150s in this generation which I believe are 97 - 03. This sensor was actually leaking oil and that is why it was changed, however if your light is on the dash or your needle not accurate you can change it for cheap and quick by yourself.

I watch this video and thought oh man it makes it look really easy. Unfortunately you didn’t mention North forgot to mention that you had a big lift kit on your truck which separates and makes more distance from the front differential to where you actually have to get into. If somebody has a stock F150 with no lift on it. Believe you me this job is one pain in the ass.

I have a 2000 RWD 5.4 that when cold the oil light would go on and off until it warmed up. Mine was slightly different to remove though so if anyone sees this and needs help here what I did. I was able to get the driver side on a jack stand and my oil pressure sensor was only accessible from the front of the truck. After getting under it I was not able to get the connector out as it was facing towards the back and I could not see or get leverage to remove it. After using an open ended wrench with the connector still on I was able to break the oil pressure sensor loose with the little space I had and turned it around until the connector faced me. Then I used a flathead screwdriver to push down and remove the connector. Then I used the wrench and my fingers to remove the oil pressure sensor. After it came out I had to quickly thread the new one on as oil was coming out and then use the wrench to tighten it back up.

I really like your video and I’ve done a lot of research on my Ford F150 2005 lariat something I didn’t know that took me three months to figure out was from salt corrosion on 2005 that was highway driven there is fuel centre under the spare tire in the rear end. They used to be made out of aluminum and when we finally determined after $1000, I’ve changing out other parts was an $90 fax under the spare tire at the rear end, which is a relay sensor. The old ones are made of aluminum. The new ones are made of plastic and that fix my problem. You should make a video about it.

Thanks for the video. My trucks low oil pright just started to come on when I start it. After 30 seconds or so it'll bounce into the normal position. I have plenty of oil and only 80k miles. I am going to replace this sensor when I do my oil change next week. 👍🏼 Thanks!

Hey man I think mine went out i lost all oil pressure but i know nothing about trucks. I have the same truck but do you need to be under the truck to find the sensor ? I can see my oil filter but just the bottom of it when i crawl under the truck. If I take this to a mechanic how much will i spend?

could be a gauge cluster. buy an obd2 scanner with diagnostic capabilities off amazon that connects to ur phone. check the temp readings there. if its fine there, idk anything about electronic repair but theres probably an issue there. see if they rebuild them on ebay

if u really dont want to buy that scanner, just buy a new coolant temp sensor. thats the wrong way to do it tho.

Could be a simple light bulb issue, or like Bogus Lawyer mentioned pretty much anything in the gauge cluster. Or who knows, maybe the sensor is going bad. Really hard to diagnose that kind of thing when you aren't there in person...Also, I am not a mechanic.

I have the extended oil cooler line with my filter all the way out to the front bumper... is the oil pressre sensor going to still be in the location yours is?

Unless your kit moves the sensor as well I would imagine that the sensor would stay where it's at.

I'm actually wondering if the very slow leak that always beads down my oil cooler line could possibly be from the sensor I always thought it was from the cooler line itself and I almost put some at-205 in the motor in hopes of rejuvenating the rubber to slow the week or stop it but now I'm thinking about checking that sensor. I don't have any gauge problems but that doesn't mean it's not leaking right?

@@ryanwyrick6947 that could be correct yes. It is a very simple thing to check! As cheap as they are, if you are pulling it out, you may consider just replacing it while you are at it. However simply tightening it, or pulling it and putting some Teflon on the threads might just solve your leak!

Is this a normal issue? My 4.6 has been flickering to zero, then at pressure is flickering up and down a bit, it has to be a bad reading as there is no knock,I just changed the oil as well low kms 240*** so figure I should change it?

Very well could be, lets hope it isn't the pump! Either way replacing the sensor is a cheap easy way to find out. Cheaper/easier/faster than going in for an official diagnosis lol

Maybe you could have better secured that busted wire harness plug with a bunch of little wire ties. You know, one around the sending unit, one around the harness plug and two more connecting the first two together to keep the whole mess together.

I thought this video was how to turn a stock Ford oil switch to where it actually reads your oil pressure not just 7.

You'd need an aftermarket guage for that. The stock sensor works, it is the guage that is programmed to be the "dummy" guage and point the needle
