How to Change Moen Kitchen Faucet Cartridge

Today we change out a Moen Kitchen Faucet Cartridge "1255" due to leaking from the base.

Yes that can work, but in our experience it only lasts a little while until it leaks again, replacement usually solves the problem the first time around

All I did was used silicon grease between gasket after I cleaned it and retighten the plastic bolt that you see at 1:12 . As the faucet is turned left right many times over time that plastic bolt comes loose and gasket looses contact. My gasket was in good condition so didn’t need replacing .

I believe our cartridge is clogged, we barely have any water coming out and we've already cleaned the aerator. Thank you for this video, I didn't want to spend the $170 to call a plumber. Going to try to do it myself after work. I'm assuming if I'm just cleaning it instead of replacing it, all I have to do is run it under some water? I'm hoping I don't have to open it up or something... I know next to nothing about this stuff, but since we just bought our first home I'm trying to learn as we run into things. This video was super helpful since it was the only one that showed a faucet like mine with the little hot/cold indicator, and how to get in to the cartridge.

Moen told me to replace the cartridge and orings on my single handle faucet due to leaking around the base. I have the handle and cartridge removed, but the faucet spout won't come off even when I lift and rotate it (it only lifts slightly). Suggestions? I may try just replacing the cartridge because I'm not getting anywhere with lifting the spout off.

Great video, but my question is how do I find out the make and model of the faucet to get the correct cartridge if needed? I see no markings (it's a 3 hole model- faucet, spray, and single lever for hot/cold ) and was put in by the builder 15 years ago.

If you dont know and cant see any markings and cant figure it by looking through google. You need to shut the water off to the faucet, take it apart and take the cartridge to your nearest plumbing supply or big box store and try and match the cartridge

Long shot of a question, but I've removed the screw holding the handle in place but it won't come off. I suspect there might be some corrosion or something keeping the handle stuck to the cartridge section and thus unable to pull it apart. Any suggestions on how to loosen it up?

If the crew has been removed and the handle isn’t coming off, you’re just going to have to keep working at it and adding more force until it breaks free from the head of the cartridge. There isn’t anything holding it other than possibly corrosion.

I just want to add that you can put it in wrong. I followed your directions about the channels and didn’t realize that the holes also have to align. I had water spurting out because of it. Got it done though but had to towel dry my sink area.

I've got a Moen single lever faucet, not the same model, but this one has a small phillips head screw retaining the handle. Unfortunately the screw will not budge. Not even with an impact screwdriver. I'll have to drill it out or call a plumber!

Get you a screw extraction kit, they sell them at big box stores, that will be your best bet

Yes, I understand that it is a new faucet, Moen had several units going out with a faulty retaining nut and later sent units out with a spring, if there is no spring then that is the issue new or not.

I have a customer, this Thursday they are going to be on their third faucet. The old one leaked, I replaced Saturday, she just notified me that the new one leaks. Any ideas? I did notice a large spring on top of the new valve that wasn't on the old one. With the new valve, I made sure the nut was tight.. So I don't understand where the leak is coming from.

If the spring is there, make sure that the nut is tight, place the spring on top, replace handle, dap around base of faucet. It if leaks the go under the sink, it may be the connection point of the sprayer or the water supply stops. Please let me know and if possible some pictures. Feel free to send an email

Suggestion tell people that the hex wrench size is 5/64”! Another KZbinr mentioned that it’s 3/32”! Which is 1/64” larger than 5/64”. 3/32 is equal to 6/64
