Did my front shocks yesterday and this video gave me a solid start of the process. I live in Canada so tons of salt. I had some corrosion and found that a bearing puller was the easiest way to remove the shock from the lower mount. It was really siezed on but the puller made easy work of it. Secondly, the bushings on the top mount (both sides) had corroded to the frame, so I used my Dremel and a cut off disc to cut the corrosion just aft of the bushings. I was then able to use vise grips and work the bushings off the post. After cleaning up the mounts, installation was a breeze!

This guy makes it look very easy with his $25,000 equipment. For the broke folk like me, get a pry bar, some elbow grease, a hammer, and the Lord almighty on your side.

One difference might be that the vehicle he is working on was not driven in the northeast or the upper Midwest where salted roads cause incredible corrosion. The reality in New England is that you might have to cut (with an angle grinder) that lower shock mount. Be careful not to grind all the way through.

Is it necessary to put on any line or anti seaze for rust on either the bottom part of the new shock when attaching or the top? Idk what really to ask but I hope that makes sense.

Thank you for your feedback ! You are right - before mounting, you can grease it with anti-seize stuff, it will facilitate the dismantling in further replacements. Best regards, Autodoc.

That vehicle was not driven on salted roads. So things went very smoothly. If you have a vehicle driven in the northeast or the upper Midwest where salted roads you will not knock that shock off that easy. Incredible corrosion causes real problems. The reality in New England is that you might have to cut (with an angle grinder) that lower shock mount. Be careful not to grind all the way through. Grind it 3/4 of the way through.

Each step of replacement is quite unique when do a car repair, hence we cannot show all problems you might face when replacing. Moreover it is not so easy to handle them yourself at home. To avoid this, we always recommend specialized car services.

At minute 2:36 the technician is using a tire pry bar to remove the shock. I have that same style pry bar and when i bought it, it specifically stated only to use for tire removal or it could break and cause injury. Since your hitting it with a hammer, this could actually happen and injure you. Further, the technician is not using a torque wrench when reinstalling the bolts. Guessing like that could allow the bolts to loosen and fall off while driving. Why isnt the tech using a torque wrench and the proper torque ? If you did this to a customer car, its a potential lawsuit. In all honesty, the 2 cases above are unlikely to happen, but I think you should at state it as a warning.
