How to change spark plugs 2003 2004 2005 Yamaha R6

A how to guide for changing the spark plugs on a 2003 2004 or 2005 Yamaha YZF-R6.

Thanks buddy just finished mine tonight, the bike would run but missing a cylinder changed all 4 and now runs great. For anyone wondering you dont have to take the tank off, I just unscrewed the 2 bolts then propped it up with a big breaker bar. Peace

Are the new plugs supposed to look like the ones we take out in the sense of that threaded tip part? Because the plugs I bought for my 04 (NGK CR10EIX) have a cap thing on the tip... Wish I could post pics

I just recently order the K&N filter. Is there a reason why you didnt cut out that little rubber circle thing on the filter. The instructions say that i need to do that.

My R6 has been sitting for almost 3 years. Last time I wrote it I had changed all the spark plugs and coils and got a new battery. Do you think I would be all right with just changing my oil and oil filter and charge my battery to start running it?

Heck no you gonna need to clean the gas tank. Use apple cider vinegar to clean it. There are videos on youtube on how to do it. Everything else you did is cool but clean out that gas tank

3 years is nothing for a fuel injected bike. Use starting fluid sprayed up its nose if you have to, but you probably won't. Top it up with clean gas, and expect it to run better once the old gas has been run through it. If it is an '02 or older carbureted bike, then you need to clean the carbs out and if that doesn't work, disassemble the fuel pump and petcock, clean them, and put them back in with fresh gas.

I figured I would have to drain the gas tank and put new gas in. I still haven't gotten around to working on it yet I recently bought an 07 GSXR 1000 so I've been riding that but I would still like to get my R6 running

Just a little constructive criticism..... wearing a headlamp to light up what it is that you are looking at next time, might brighten things up for the viewer as to what you are describing. Question..... Did you check the gap on the plugs before installing them, just be sure they were set right?

Thanks for the suggestion! I did not check the gap, just bought the plugs that were a specific fit for the bike and had the recommended gap...I had no prior knowledge to check them. From what I've learned, it may be a good idea to confirm the gap is where its supposed to be.

A K&N recharge kit is fairly inexpensive and will last you a long time for all of your filters. Comes with good filter detergent and an aerosol oil that helps you to not "over oil".

That lid u have to pull off to get to the coils and spark plugs,... my lid is blocked my alot of cables and idk how to pull it out without messing up the cable set up

I had the same issue. There are 2 plastic clips that you basically have to brake. They are like push pins for car panels. You wont get them out in one piece. Then there are two more like that that hold the wires into that plastic guard. I just did this job. My plugs looked great at 20 k miles

That plastic cover is held on by 2 tabs. Whoever worked on your bike before probably broke them, or just didn't put them back. ( the cover directly over the coils )

There is also 2 more push pins that hold the wires to the plastic piece. That plastic plate is the worst part of the whole job

The plugs to use are listed on the sticker in the tail section of the bike, in the owner's manual, and the service manual (both of which are available online for free). Depends on the year, but CR10EK for '03-'05 or CR09EK if you are not running it hard.
