How to change the drive belts on the Mercedes R170 SLK 230K

This video shows you how to remove and replace the engine serpentine drive belts on the R170 230K Mercedes SLK, and includes the tools required to release the pressure exerted by the belt tensioner.

Just a suggestion - provide links to the tools and parts that you use on a job. Thanks for making this video! I have the same car in a 2004 model, and will be changing belts, tensioners, etc this summer.

It’s a good idea but I bought my belt tools from eBay and Amazon. The problem is the sellers come and go. That’s why I usually put pictures of the tool from where I got it and not an actual link which may well be dead. It was easier years ago when there were many parts stores around. I’ll try to do so in future though. Good luck with the car.

Use a cheater bar, (aka, pipe fit over the handle of the ratchet for leverage), it costs zero money if you have a pipe laying around. If you do not, then use an 8mm 12 point box end wrench on the bolt and the then grab another bigger box end wrench and use the open end of the 8mm wrench and hook the box end of your bigger wrench into the open end of your 8mm wrench and viola, you have a cheater bar to give you more leverage. **Pro tip: when asserting a lot of force using your hands, keep your hand in an open position. If you use a closed hand on the wrench, your likely to bust your knuckles when the nut/bolt breaks loose.

Btw it does show a 1328 for the alt belt which I haven't fitted yet rather than a 1350 as mentioned below - I'll let you know how it goes. Also has good diagrams of the routing of both belts.

Ha, I see that the front valve cover fell off mid-drive for you too. It's got that distinct half-circle burnmark. Happened to me too.

The 1350 belt is for the supercharger and the 1873 and 1700 belts are for the main belt

It’s at the bottom of the left side as you’re looking at the engine from the front. It’s towards the front closest to the radiator.

Do you know where I can get a manual online for free ? Like Hayes manual. How much travel was on the tensioning wheel because I can only get an 1873 belt that should be okay it's only 3 minutes just curious to see how much travel is there .

Not for free. There are downloadable ones on places like eBay though. Pretty cheap. Not sure exactly how much travel there was, but it was a fair bit as I remember.

Devo cambiarle anche io sulla mia SLK 200 l'ho ordinata da AutoDoc ma ho riscontrato problemi nell'individuarla e ho fatto lo stesso tuo errore, senza aria condizionata, ma sul catalogo c'è la cinghia chiamata Poly-V ma è una sola o ce ne sono due da cambiare? Il mio ordine è in corso faccio in tempo a modificare l'ordine.

There are only two belts, one for supercharger and the other for the accessories

The belt can be from many manufacturers but the important bit is the length. Mine (with a/c) is 1870. If you loook up drive belts find one that length and you’re good to go.
