Thanks so much! The dealer wanted $145 for this, I will be doing it myself for the price of parts thanks to your video.

2 comments: 1. Check your owner's manual for the appropriate fluid to use. Some Commanders (and Grand Cherokees) use ATF4+ in the TC and some use the OEM NV241/NV245 TC fluid. 2. Never, NEVER first crack open the drain plug to drain ANYTHING!!! ALWAYS start with the fill plug, especially if this is the first time you are doing this kind of job yourself. There are times when you might not be able to budge the fill plug on your own, so if you've already drained out the fluid first, you are now stuck for a solution.

Exactly each is different so many comments saying she's wrong. No she's not. I have same vehicle and original book. She is using right fluid
@wiley07146 жыл бұрын
You and Uncle minty... should check the technical service bulletins which states that atf4 fluid is no longer used in the transfer case. The NV140/NV245 both use Mopar transfer case fluid, or you can even use Amsoil tractor fluid. ATF 4 is no longer used because it can cause squealing in sharp turning. Oh I think I got it they don't know the difference between the transmission and the transfer case.....even worse.....

Is it the same method to change the differential fluid? What about flushing the brake fluid?
@joshuamoore24_73 жыл бұрын
Are you sure it does not take Mopar NV 245 transfer case fluid? It looked like a gear oil color instead of ATF+4 when you drained. The QD-II & QT-II it says online takes 1.8 quarts of Mopar NV245 transfer case oil!!. If it takes ATF +4 it supposed take 3.5 quarts. I think you might have put the wrong fluid in the transfer case. It came out like a light gear oil color when drained not red like ATF +4!!!!

Why did light brown fluid come out ? Looks like motor oil, not ATF.
@damntheman66606 жыл бұрын
It's 100% not the recommended fluid for the quadra drive 2. If you look at the manual, you'll see that it specifically calls for mopar nv245 transfer case fluid. You can get it at your dodge/Jeep dealer for around $15 a quart or Amazon for $20 a quart. That's the reason it was brown and not red when you drained it. To anyone changing their own transfer case fluid on a commander, DO NOT USE ATF FLUID if you have a quadra drive 2 commander. Here is a link for all the info you will need to change your fluids. It's for the wk Jeep but the commander(xk) is the exact same with a different body. wkjeeps.com/wk_maintenance.htm#FAXLE

No it doesn't. I have to 2006 5.7 quadra drive 2 and it calls for transmission fluid atf +4.
@marydi99102 жыл бұрын
The book says atf plus 4. . 🙄
@jan-carlaserlind78422 жыл бұрын
@@marydi9910 I have the same Jeep and it is a bit ambiguous. Bottom line: you can't go wrong using the Mopar NV245 fluid; it has the proper friction modifiers and performs better. The price difference is so small as to be meaningless. Go with the Mopar.
@ninelivesracing11 жыл бұрын
you used the wrong transfer case fluid. the commander has internal clutches that need a specific fluid to keep them cool. general transfer case fluid will ruin the clutches. just looking out

I have same vehicle and the original book calls for atf+4 which is exactly what she used.

Your supposed take the fill plug out first. I think you put the wrong fluid type. It looks like the Mopar NV 245 transfer case fluid that came out when you drained. You will want to drain it and put the proper fluid ASAP!
@marydi99102 жыл бұрын
Wrong. She clearly loosened fill plug first if you watched video and our vehicle calls for transmission fluid to be used in transfer case. I have the original book. She used the correct fluid
@jan-carlaserlind78422 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct; use the Mopar NV 245 fluid--- it's well worth the negligible price differential and won't void the warranty (if your vehicle is still under warranty).
@TheSchmed6 жыл бұрын
The fluid that came out looked like motor oil (light brown), and you put ATF4 (red) in.

Remove your fill plug before the drain plug.
@jviews12 жыл бұрын
agree always always always. If you cannot fill after draining, you are screwed. always fill first. it was ugly. doing mine tomorrow. agree with fluid probably need atf+4 OEM. Only use OEM for transmission and transfer case. 2 quarts is cheap.

Does anyone know where the transfer case module is?
@highnlowoutdoors96303 жыл бұрын
Under the back seat on driver side.
@jan-carlaserlind78422 жыл бұрын
@@highnlowoutdoors9630 Yep. Tip the seat up, remove the trim panel on the carpet, pull back the carpet and you'll find the module. Replacement is plug and play. Reverse your steps and, if you're lucky, that stupid "Service 4WD" light will go out.

The problem with videos such as these is when working on a vehicle such as the Commander, they failed to mention engine size, year, type of 4wd system and if there was more than one transfer case ever used in this vehicle. This information needs to be disclosed at the very beginning. I mean, just look at the comments, everyone is arguing about what's right/wrong and seem to have evidence to support their side. So what the F is going on? If you're going to do a video, be as clear and transparent about what you're doing.
