Wow! I wasn’t expecting this when I clicked on this. This was great. I sound just like my mother and I hate it. Because she always spoke in a negative, judgmental, Debbie downer type of way. I’ve picked up poor social skills and it makes it hard for people to understand where I am coming from. I’ve been since trying to consciously be aware of how I’m talking or expressing my feelings to people without coming off “fake”. Thank you.

I have gotten into the habit of saying everything with a subtle insinuation of irony so much so that I have unintentionally offended people while trying to complement them. It’s not a problem when someone knows me and learns I’m a generally kind caring person. But with insecure strangers it can cause conflicts to erupt out of nowhere.

I used to have the same problem too! When I was younger I came across as tooooo intense, even though I was just trying to be normal. I resolved the issue by consciously speaking softer, and I've never received that critique since. The solution is always conscious actions : )
@kelsmy3 жыл бұрын
It’s a conscious choice. Tone can be either a reflection of your true emotions or a projection of a vision and mission. I’m a bilingual speaker. Tone varies depending if you speak your own mother tongue or secondary language, for work or social, under pressure/urgent situation etc. Tone carries your attitude. Be mindful especially now we work from home and engage more virtually.

Thanks to your videos I just realized that why others have issues with my tone. Whenever I am in a conflict my tone becomes authoritative and sound angry and rude to others. I didn't understand why it was happening when clearly it was not my intention. But now I realised it comes from fear and need to protect myself so no one can overpower me. Thank you so much. I will try to be mindful and try to think before speaking the way I speak.😊

The Problem here in this video is "Self-awareness". And that's my problem. Im just not aware of what i actually doing while people around me aware of it. - My emotion: when im not angry but my face looks like im angry. sometimes people say why im smiling when i dont really smile. - My voice: sometimes i raise my voice in the middle of conversation without knowing it myself. These things become somewhat i cannot control. what a shame!
@alexanderlyon5 жыл бұрын
Self awareness is the key. I hope you are able to reflect on what exactly is going on in your mindset in those moments. It might be just a slight change in how you feel that is leading to those nonverbals you describe.

As a parent I needed this video so much! I have a 10yr old with Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder. It causes a super exaggerated fight or flight response to things that most people would not be affected by. For a very long time she would get more and more upset during situations she was in trouble because she felt I was yelling at her. I wasn’t and as she got older she was able to communicate it’s my tone. More specifically it’s my frustrated tone. Before all the haters start in, her brain is wired in a way that won’t change as quickly as I can change my tone. She is neurodiverse in other aspects too. After this video diving deeper, I think it’s also the way I emphasize my sentences. Can’t wait to watch the next video “How to change tone of voice”

Although your videos were very informative, I need to bring to your attention a few things you are missing; 1- Tone of voice is basically the result of life experiences. I don't think it's possible to change the tone of voice ( you can if you want to act and not be yourself). 2- Tone of voice formed by our language knowledge, such as terminology and grammar. 3- If the English was your second language then your tone of voice will be totally different from the native speaker ( again, you can change it if you want to gain trust, work opportunity, and personal experience). 4- Every language has its own and primary tone. That also could enforced by cultural influences. Thank you for your video.

Thank you so much for this video Coach Alex. Currently in college what I have realized after many years is that my tone of voice comes off angry and upset all the time. I was super outgoing and friendly but would always find myself being labeled as rude or mean even though I didn’t say things that were such. People would tell me to relax even though I was or would be coming at me when I was just trying to have regular convo. I would be so confused, fell into depression and it’s affected me deeply. I guess what I’m trying to ask is with depression it is very hard to change my mindset, so how can I work more on my tone if my mindset will be changing at a slower pace?
@alexanderlyon4 жыл бұрын
Most mental health counseling helps if people stick with it. I obviously am not a medical professional but I have read that depression is not a life-long sentence and therapy works. If I were in your situation, I'd start by talking to a therapist.

@BBGshop73 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the way you explained the things that effect the tone of voice. I had been feeling tense from bad memories. Sensations would just come up anytime something reminds of the past. My heart would start beating fast, and I would feel defensive. Before I know it, my tone has changed; I'm still saying the same words that I would normally say... but the tone carried my message in another direction, and I would be perceived as blunt or harsh sometimes. I think I had gotten so used to texting or writing straightforward messages, and maybe I could be partially speaking how I type as well. I was disappointed in the direction some of my conversations would go because I didn't understand what I said wrong. Edit:TONE truly is key, and I realized that my head has to be in the right place for deeper talks so my tone of voices gives the right message. I am very glad to have a new perspective on the mindset I need to be in to carry on a pleasant conversation. Thank you.

I am constantly told by my wife that I have a certain tone with her. I realize that this is the case and wonder if it is because I am a guilt-driven person and always critical of myself. I wonder if I am projecting my self-critical thoughts onto my wife. I also asked the question, '" My wife is blank." I realize that when she doesn't understand something, how to do something, or hear something that I think she should, I get short. I then ask myself, "Can I be like that?' and the answer is a solid yes. That gives me grace to know that the very thing that I struggle with she does too. Wow! What an insight! Thank you for this video! I've been told at work by my boss that he doesn't like my communication style through email. Do you have anything that helps with that? I consider myself to be more direct and don't want to obfuscate the important with needles details that may distract. My mother is super, uber direct and even I am uncomfortable with it. Also, this video reminded me of this: And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me-everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9 NLT Thanks again!

I don’t like hearing my sound in the phone audio notes...it’s very alike the sound of the voice of my ex mother, is it possible to change not the mood but the actual sound? 😣
@alexanderlyon5 жыл бұрын
Good question but it's not really possible to do that in the short run. You can maybe changes things a little bit over time but our voices are part of our physical development.

Wow this and the first video have great useful information. I really want to improve my tone of voice as verbal communication is a must when working on the phones. This is the first time I come across your videos, but I really look forward to continue learning from them. I haven't check, but I would like to learn how to work on my accent. English is not my first language and sometimes people remark I have an accent.

There is a major disconnect between my tone and my mindset. Extreme abuse from childhood to adulthood has caused me to talk like the abusers even when I feel zero negative emotions. When you said it’s like changing an accent I literally said that last night to my spouse. This bothers me greatly that I am not able to articulate a proper tone of what my emotions really are, because it always sounds aggressive and angry.

A person's tone is far more memorable than the words they say.

Born and raised in Philadelphia,My Philly accent was pretty strong. When I joined the Army, my drill SGTS always called me loud and arrogant. I didnt even realize it. I had a southern gramma who was passive and sweet who always said that I was loud.. Im not an angry person. Why so people always think im angry? I live in Texas now and everyone always asks if im mad... Its so hurtful.

Solution: 4:08 How do I see the world? Most of the people around me are XYZ... Who do you sound like? ( parents maybe). What do the people you grow up with sound like? 6:40 steps

I sound like a clingy dying chicken 😭😭😭 Everyone who hears my voice for the 1st time teases me and eventually laughs at me 😭 I've been trying to change my voice all these years, but it's really hard. It makes me depressed and destroys my self-esteem 😭 All I want is a normal voice, just a regular one 💔 I'm not asking for more 💔 From this day on, October 1, 2021. I will give my very best to follow and do all ur advices. If I will be successful in changing my voice, into a better and more appropriate one. I promise, I will come back on December 31,2021 with a better voice.. Good luck to me 😭

You have finally opened the door to my problems. I would so much appreciate if you can share with me someone who can work with me on this. You have just given me a big relief. This is one of the reasons I never liked how I sound when I record myself. I also picked up very bad association with people and I’ve always been asking myself “ what is it that I do that I always push people away. Even my own kids. Please I’m asking you please share with me any other information you might know that I can seek help with this. I’m 56 and I need help with this asap.

Thank you for sharing. That takes courage and I applaud you. I can't give really specific advice because I don't know enough, but if it were me, I might talk to a therapist to see if I could get to the root of the issue. As mentioned in the video, a difficult tone is usually just a symptom of the deeper issue that's driving it. These issues are usually hard to get to the bottom of without talking to someone like a therapist who is trained at drilling down a little. I wish you the best and I hope you find the answers you're looking for.

I can relate to what you are saying. In order words, one has to do a lot of thinking before speaking. I grew up with a quarrelling aunt. I feel some of it has affected me in the anger department.

Excellent information, thank you! I definitely need to be more mindful of my tone and attitude. I often find myself myself apologizing to people saying, "I didn't mean that the way it sounded..." I know that being more mindful will help dial down my big emotional responses. (Fingers crossed!!)
