I was told by Toyota dealer that the transmission and differential cannot be done by DIY.

Well buddy. I'm only here to share. But keep in mind. Dealerships can NOT make MONEY...IF you do the majority of maintenance yourself. And so If you have a Rav4 PRIME like I do, then I think this video speaks for itself. Anyways..I don't really know the reason, they would flat out lie to you like that. Maybe they say "cannot be done by DIY", that a person might damage something and void any warranties? Or can not be done without taking any precautions? Try this. Call other toyota dealerships and ask them and see what they say. Then google Transmission and differential fluid change for Toyota Rav4 Prime or Hybrids. And if nothing else, you can pay the dealer to have it done. Take care and stay safe.

@@badimpulses17 Yeah buddy...got that right. I can see if this was like some older trannys where it is a sealed system and there's no drain of fill plugs...that definitely would be a little difficult for DIYERs... Unless I really have no other choice, then I'd prefer to do it myself. That way I won't have to worry, whether the mechanic was taking a short cut or having a bad day at work and wants to take it out on my PRIME...hahahaha...

Flush transmission oil - meaning forced oil with machine into the transmission through the oil lines - it could damage valve body seals and many more on the regular transmission - simply because car is off and everything in lock position. Simple drain and refill cannot cause the damage unless you are under-fill it or use incomparable product.

Thanks buddy, glad you found it useful. Always glad to share. Thanks for telling me about the Suzuki Across, I really had no idea that vehicle exist as Suzuki doesn't sell it here in the USA, but you are quite correct, pretty darn close to being the same as the Rav4 Prime. I know the Prime in paper says up to 42EV just on electric alone, but I have been averaging over 50miles just on EV mode. How about your Across? What are you averaging on just EV mode? Been all across Europe during my Army days, what tires do you have on your Across?
@Stuart-vo8rl
@Stuart-vo8rl Жыл бұрын
Same as you. Averaging in the 5Os. On a full charge the car is showing 59 miles EV driving. Instrument panel showing 3.4miles/Kwh. Tyres are Yokohama 19 inch. Changed the front tyres at 50,000 miles and now approaching 68,000 miles and still have the original tyres on rear with plenty of miles left in them before they need changing. I'm changing the Engine oil every 7000 miles but Suzuki says in sevice manual every 9,000 miles but after watching many KZbin videos thought the lower might be best. I'm a taxi driver and averaging 65,000 miles a year using my Suzuki Across. Hoping to keep the car for another 5 years but by then the car will be 300,000 plus miles. Don't see why the car can't run into 300,000 miles but the battery will be another thing. Not many Suzuki Across in the UK as I have only seen 4 others in the past year but many Toyota Ravs. I do get a second look from the Toyota Rav drivers who pass me. So far very happy with the fuel consumption even on long journeys.

@@Stuart-vo8rl That's good to hear Stuart. I'm sure you're putting that Across to maximum effect as a taxi Driver. Keep me in the loop when you reach 100,000 and so on. Since like you said the Rav4 and the Across is basically the same, I'd be curious to see how the battery charge holds up. Do you super charge with level 2 charger? Myself, no fast charging here, charging slow overnight works out for me. Never in a rush anyways. Since you're a Taxi Driver, what sort of dash cam do you use?
@Stuart-vo8rl
@Stuart-vo8rl Жыл бұрын
Yes sure on keeping you updated on Battery and the car on 100,000 miles. Should reach 100,000 miles before Xmas. My car only charges at 3.6KWH but the newer versions are 7.2KWH. I'm using a extension lead from the house to charge car and it takes about 6 hours. I believe if i did charge using a type 2 it wouldn't be much quicker due to the on-board charger fitted to the Across. I read somewhere that a slow charge is better for the battery life. I do charge the battery up a lot. I run my business from home and if I'm working locally doing a lot of local trips I charge the car every time I drive back on to the driveway even for 10min before I go back out. My dash cam is Road Angel Halo Ultra - 4K Ultra from Costco. Good hi res picture.

Please correct me If I'm wrong, but if you do disconnect the power cable near the rear differential, you should pull the main safety plug on the battery (located in a panel on the floor in front of the rear seats). There's a 355 v battery that could kill you.
@jt2quick
@jt2quick 4 ай бұрын
Yes, You are absolutely 100% correct. That Voltage could kill anyone. Yes I could have disconnected the hybrid disconnect plug located right in the middle of the rear passenger seats down on the floorboard, but as you can see, I did not. For people who are uncomfortable with handling high voltage cables, I would suggest disconnecting the hybrid plug. Or as you can see here, wait a good hour or so to discharge some of that voltage and be mindful of what you are doing and you should be okay.

Question... In California here... We unfortunstely have crap gas (ethanol) thanks to the entire state being hijacked hy pirates. Im wondering how often you have to fill up your gas on your RAV4 Prime. With CA gas your generators/law mowers get jacked from leaving ethanol in there too long - you have to run TruFuel thru it before you store it.... Im wondering if California gas will be bad on a Prime.
@jt2quick
@jt2quick Жыл бұрын
Hey Buddy, yeah...that's piss-poor. Ethanol is really not the best...for any vehicle. It will work, but because of that Ethanol, your gas mileage will suffer. Don't get me wrong, you can still use it, but with the PRIME. I do not recommend it at all and if you read and research it online, you'll see that Ethanol in the long run does eat up the seals and stuff in your gas tank. So the flow of thinking.... PRIME..is a super efficient vehicle, with outstanding EV range alone. You might be tempted not to use that ETHANOL GAS in your tank, thereby it will STAY in there alot longer. that is not good Partner. Gas in itself being in the tank for an extended period is terrrible, Ethanol being bad in itself, staying in your gas tank longer is much worst. And so to stop all my jibber-jabber, if you have NO choice at all but to use Ethanol, then make sure you run it in and out, use it regularly on your Prime to prevent that Ethanol messing it up. So if that's the case, just put a smal amount of gas in the tank, not full, if it's Ethanol. I myself here, use "TOP-TIER" GAS.. it's good for the PRime, look it up online "Top Tier Gas"...do not know if they offer it there in Cali, but check it out. Yes it will be between $.60 - $.80 cents more, but worth it. Just FYI on my PRIME I am not averaging over 51mpg just on the Fuel. for EV range my average is over 50EV.. Hope this helps you out. Take care and stay safe.

Hello, great tutorial. I saw the care care nut video on draining the fluid and he suggested to level the vehicle with jack stands from the frame. Im not sure if the vehicle could be leveled on the tires.
@jt2quick
@jt2quick 8 ай бұрын
Hello and yes...there's several ways anyone..can interpret this. I'll get long winded here to give you the best...possible course of action. But basically leveling the VEHICLE is the BEST way to do the job right. With that in mind, YOU just have to find the best and most LEVEL place to do it on. Naturally the most level would probably be inside the GARAGE. That is option1. Option 2: place the appropriate blocks, wood, any material to get the vehicle as level as possible, like I showed here as we all know each driveway slope will vary. Option 3: Find a spot somewhere, resource person like you probably know a few places..... where you can go...behind an empty building, friend's place or even a side street to do the drain and fill, but that's not really good idea as "WHAT IF", you start the process and find out you left the tranny fluid at home or forgot a tool??? Option4: if possible find an "auto-hobby" shop around your area that will let you do the change. Like I'm retired military so I have access to the military facility auto-craft shop, but I did it here to give people an idea how it can be done. You will not get it...totally and perfectly level...so don't worry too much on that part...just get the vehicle as level as possible and do it. I watch the car care nut myself and ideas from him if not the actual procedures. Based on what you mentioned above, you probably do not have any ramps to drive on, which means it'll be as you go to level the vehicle as best as possible. If your vehicle is a Rav4 Prime like mine..then..it's a heavy baby...so be careful. Take care..and let me know if you have any other questions.

Does the RAV4 Prime have a transfer case that needs the fluid changed?
@jt2quick

Well buddy, I'll be honest and I am not 100% sure. So I'll just share what I have found and conclusion I came up with. I've looked, checked the full 616 page owners manual and cross checked with the maintenance log and found NO mention of a transfer case or fluid for that matter. And that would make sense since the transfer case is usually found on 4X4 vehicles to transfer power to the respective wheels when off-roading. So..that's my take on it. @jt2quick
@jt2quick 8 ай бұрын
Hey buddy, No I did not use all 7 qts. Had about 1/2 a quart left. But keep in mind, as you fill it up and it starts to overflow and starts to trickle.....that is your indicator that it is at the acceptable level and you can put the plug back in. As long as the vehicle is on pretty much level ground, you'll be okay. SO don't think that you have to put in ALL 7 qts. You should just have that approximate, in case you spill something. You don't want to get caught short, then have to make a pit stop at 7 Eleven or something. Take care.

Hey buddy...the procedure should be the same. Not sure whether your fluid has ever been changed or the mileage on your vehicle and I'm sure you've heard both sides of the "Do or DO NOT change the tranny fluide" based on others line of thought. But whatever you decide to do, my recommendation is to make sure you can take out the Fill Plug first. 2nd use a cheap pan like those cooking pans to collect ALL the old fluid out to give you an idea how much fluid came out and the condition. 3rd from what I heard there is the original drain bolt (10mm Hex) then, after the initial drain and waiting, there should be another plastic type drain plug that you take out with a 6mm hex). Best way to see if it is correct of course is drain it in that pan, check out how much is in there, if it is less than 3quarts, then for sure you still got fluid in the tranny and is kept in there by that plastic drain plug. Anyways...that's all I can think of. Good luck to you buddy... you a 13B or a 13H? Take care and stay safe.

Hey buddy... good for you..it will be easy. I replaced mine with new ones......they're not that expensive, but honestly....here's a tip. Buy NEW ones. then before putting it back on the car...take a look at the OLD vs the NEW...and if you think they look OK...hey..nothing wrong with reusing it. Those gaskets are used to make sure there's a tight seal anyways..and you'll know in a few miles...whether you had it tight or not or if the gaskets should have been replaced. It's not going to like come out gushing like Niagra Falls so...don't worry..if anything...it will be a very slow leak..if any. Anyways.... it's just a matter of personal preference... AAA.... you have a point there. AMD is a Toyota Certified Tech and he mentioned changing the tranny fluid between 60-90K. Odd that on the Toyota maintenance schedule, it doesn't say to change it at all when being driven regular, but if towing, using car top carrier or heavy vehicle loading, then replace it at 60k. And regarding slipping...yes..that is a possibility. I myself, never experienced it myself. I know in the old days people used to "Flush the Tranny", but I sure wouldn't do that. Heck even on the Rav4world.com website, I read people posting to change the tranny fluid after 120k. Guess everyone's got their opinions on it. But for myself....I do some towing once or twice a month and I guess time will only tell whether my preventive maintenance checks and services (PMCS- still stuck in the Army ways) will pay off or not. Heck...look at the dealership below....talk about just trying to make money off people....Incredible... Yeah...hope some DIY or certified mechanics out there can give us their viewpoints on the transmission fluid change. By the way...do you have the Prime SE or XSE? These hybrid transmissions and rear diff are totally different from the gas engine counterparts. It doesnt have the torque converter that would cause the slippage. So change away. The torque converters need many additional steps to properly filling and Toyota limits you to changing 2.5qt at a time to minimize slipping. Anyone please correct me if I am wrong.
@Cfass1

You can turn on the defroster which will automatically engage the engine. Always a good idea to drive around but this way the engine will be engaged the entire time and won’t go into EV mode at lower speeds. Interesting how Toyota recommends this at 60k&120k to replace fluids only if towing or hauling. I’ve heard that the transmission fluid in the eCVT systems are a fluid bath rather than your typical hydraulic automatic transmission, so the fluid change is not as critical. Nobody knows the real answer until it’s proven two decades from now. The truth lie$ $omewhere between the two lol.

It's actually bad to change the transmission fluid to often. The Prime needs it between 60 and 90 thousand miles depending on use. Towing alot, change it at 60,000, otherwise change it at 80 to 90,000. The clutches wear in the car and the particles from the clutch wear actually bond to the clutch plates again and reinforce the clutches. Changing it too often wears the clutches faster and will result in alot costlier maintenance in the future.

You've got a point there, pbear. And I would agree with you if I had purchased an older or used vehicle. I have listened to alot of AMD's videos regarding maintenance and by all means, I'm not a mechanic. I changed mine at 30,000 just to show and demonstrate how easy it is, but I do plan to change it every 60,000 miles. AMD also mentioned that. Heck there's even alot out there who says don't need to change the oil except every 15,000 miles because synthetic engine oil last alot longer. Everyone lives their own way. Only time will tell whether my decision will be the correct or wrong one. Take care and stay safe.

@@jt2quick I am a trained mechanic. Oil can be changed daily even, with no adverse affects, transmission fluid cannot. I would not recommend waiting 15,000 miles to change oil in most modern cars because of direct injection. Much more fuel ends up in the oil and breaks it down quicker with direct injection engines.
@pbear216
@pbear216 Жыл бұрын
Most modern cars should have their oil changed at between 5 and 6 thousand miles regardless of oil used. The only real benefit of synthetic oil is that it is able to protect at lower viscosity allowing better fuel economy. It still breaks down just as fast as conventional oil though when mixed with fuel from the cylinder walls. That said, never use conventional oil in a vehicle that requires synthetic, such as the Rav4.
