Thank you! I couldn’t figure out how to get that ring gasket out either! Seeing you work it made me think I can too.

Looks like a swell service that you performed. After researching this topic of a/t fluid changes, & after having done a few on my Town Cars (a 1996 & a 2007) I learned a few things. A number of manufacturers make the automatic transmission pan gasket reusable. I've looked at mine and the old one with 100K miles on it looks to be in the same shape as the new one I ordered! ---As you know changing fluid typically does not remove it from the torque converter. On some vehicles there is a way to remove a bolt to remove the trans fluid in there (which can be half or more of the old fluid) but on others they have removed the bolt (to reduce manufacturing complexity) to remove the fluid in the torque converter. I did the same as you on my Town car with 97K miles on it and then added a Dorman brand trans pan with a drain plug installed making future fluid changes much easier. As you may know, on vehicles that are not abused and service regularly, the number one function of the a/t magnet and fluid filter is to catch debris from inside the transmission that were left there after assembly from the factory. This is why, assuming that the transmission is of good quality and the vehicle is service properly and not abused, the trans filter & magnet should not be getting filled up with debris and even need changing except perhaps every 100K miles after serving them once. According to a Ford Motor Company document I once read, the majority of debris in an a/t filter after way over 100,000 miles were still mainly from the debris that came from the initial manufacturing of the transmission, not from all the use it had been put through! So this would mean that on cars where the a/t filter is hard to replace or service without tearing into the transmission (and not simple like on your Buick or my Town Car), the major servicing of the transmission would be to at least get out the old fluid & since the trans filter is very hard to service, just leave the trans filter in there and change the fluid since it likely is not clogged because its major job, again, was to collect debris from the original assembly. If one of you engineers out there disagrees with my comments, please respond & educate me & explain where I am wrong, as I would appreciate that! So my point is is that since you actually serviced your a/t properly, you probably do not need to replace the filter (or clean the magnet) again for 100,000 miles, (unless the vehicle is put through tremendous added stress from abuse or towing, etc.). Plus, since you & I are both draining only some of the old fluid out, leaving half or more in the torque converter, doing a more frequent a/t fluid change-out for a few sessions will get out most of the older fluid. That's why I have found these trans pans with an added drain plug quite useful. As it is, you are way ahead of the game by simply getting in there, cleaning the pan & magnet, and changing some of the fluid! Any thought or opinions by others are welcome!

How much transmission fluid does 2004 buick park avenue take

How would you know if doing this is a bad idea? Would I need to check the fluid first for a color ? Don’t notice any slips in the trans or anything while driving Have a Buick park ave with 146k miles.

If you're not having any issues I'd leave it alone, but if you want to check on the fluid color, it should be a nice pink or reddish color. If it's dark brown it's time to have it changed, also sometimes it may be dark brown and have a "burnt" smell to it. Then it's time to change it.

I just did this on my 2000 park ave! Thank you, one problem, a couple of the bolts stripped when I was removing the pan and now I need replacements. Do you know which type of bolt they are? Thanks!
@jasonsshop
@jasonsshop Жыл бұрын
Nick, I'm not sure what type they are. You can take one of the bolts to a local hardware store, or stop by your local GM dealer with the bolt, and I'm sure they can help you find something to match up. Also your local Auto Parts store might have some handy. One thing -Make sure the bolt has stripped, and not the hole itself. If I remember right, the transmission is cast aluminum, if you stripped out the hole, you'll probably need to buy a HeliCoil kit to put the threads back in. Good luck!

I have been thinking on doing the same thing to my 2002 Park Avenue, but because of back issues I just might take it to the mechanic. Only problem is, are they really going to change the filter? This video really helps if I decide to do it myself. Thanks for sharing.

Would draining transmission fluid via a hose inserted down the dipstick tube lessen the fluid pouring out when removing the bottom pan? Or is that fluid from a different area that doesn't drain through the bottom pan?
@jasonsshop
@jasonsshop Жыл бұрын
Yeah that would probably help a bit. Give it a shot. It's in the same area.

Let me know if you have any problems. I am considering doing it on my 2000 Park Ave but have also heard I could be bad to change old fluid and to just let it ride

I got mom's '03 Park, 99k, trans likely never serviced. You made it look like I can do it even at my age, 77 y/o! That seal looked difficult. So if the filter seats real well into old seal, maybe I could skip that seal replacement?? I routinely perform oil service in all our vehicles & our other machines but this would be a little more difficult but would love to do it! Anyways ty very much for this vid!

You can definitely do it! That seal is a bit of a bear. It might work with the old one. I just know it's recommended you replace it. Good luck!

Anyone know why mine is suddenly making a humming sound while driving? Once I get to 30mph it humms almost as if I have large truck tires but there is nothing wrong or new with my tires. It sounds like its coming from the center of the engine compartment. I'm thinking it could be the differential but I have no idea the symptoms of that I'm about to change the transmission fluid because it is well past due extremely old the color of the transmission fluid is that of watered down motor oil but the odd thing is there's no transmission issues no slipping no grinding just this humming sound while driving even if you let off the accelerator it hums or if you drive at a consistent speed the sound is very consistent it doesn't get louder or softer it only stops when you stop. I noticed one of the CV axles boots were torn but I don't know for how long so I replaced the entire axle and it still making that noise there doesn't seem to be any performance issues everything's driving like normal

Would it make sense, or be ok to leave that filter ring in place and reuse it?
@jasonsshop
@jasonsshop Жыл бұрын
You might be able to leave it in and get away with that. The recommended procedure is to remove and replace

@@jasonsshop Thanks. Guess it would depend on if it felt like it was a tight fit using the old one. I have a 2005 Buick Lacrosse with 57k on it. The tranny fluid looks ( color) like it is is getting to the ideal time to change it. Thanks for the video!!

Take a 1/2 threaded pipe long enough to make an L. Then screw it into the bushing and then using a hammer tap down. The bushing then comes out !
