I added a magnetic drain plug assembly to my pan when I changed my filter. When I change my oil I drain my trans pan and add back 5 qts. Valvoline full synthetic Dex VI. Service manual states when you remove pan and filter you add back 6 qts. but 5 puts it back between the 2 holes on the dipstick. My pan and magnet looked like yours the first filter change, much better 2nd. filter change. Drained trans. fluid is slightly dark after one year. I have a good peace of mind when my fluids are changed now and the magnet is clean.

I welded an O2 bung/plug on my pan and was doing drain & fills with mine. About half the fluid gets changed. I have since added a TBV bypass (STL-010), now the fluid circulates thru the cooler full time, and I can use hoses to circulate all new fluid into it in one shot. You can get temp fittings/hose on the jungle website.

I'm confused about the total fluid used - you recommend at 20:18 to get 4 full jugs (16qts), and 5qts of that is the final fill-up. However, you go on to say that you will use the rest of the fluid for flushing it 3 separate times, using 1qt each time.... based on that you would only need 2 gallon jugs.

I have a 2019 Silverado LD (old style), so same transmission. I only put on 6 K miles so far (not my daily driver), and trying to get ahead of the curve. Installing the kit to lower temp transmission thermostat, and doing the pan removal and full flush with filter change. Should be interesting to see how much friction material has accumulated in the pan. From reading a bunch on these transmissions, one issue is that from the factory, they are programmed to operate in a constant slip (just a few %), but sufficient to grind away the friction material, especially if you cook the fluid. If you can find a tuner and knowledgeable tech, the slip can be lowered via programming or eliminated entirely. Hopefully, I can catch this early enough to keep the fluid cool and in good shape and reduce or eliminate the degredation of the clutch pack friction material to keep the trans going well over 100K with no problems. Really appreciate you sharing this video. Very insightful.

I know this is three years old and on the whole it's a great video. I would like to offer some counter advice though from a trained mechanic. NEVER EVER EVER REUSE THE GASKET, THEY ARE ONE TIME USE. ALWAYS USE A NEW SUMP GASKET. SECONDLY, ALWAYS REPLACE THE SEALING RING ON THE TOP OF THE FILTER HOUSING WHERE THE FILTER MEETS THE GEARBOX. tHEY AGE AND BECOME HARD THROUGH HEAT AND OIL EXPOSURE, THAT'S WHY WHEN YOU CHANGE THE FILTER YOU MUST ALWAYS REPLACE THAT SEALING RING. THIRDLY, DON'T WASh YOUr CHIT IN THE SINK, STAND OVER YOUR OIL DRAIN PAN AND CLEAN IT WITH BRAKE CLEANER. THE OIL AND GREASE WILL COME RIGHT OFF, IT WILL TAKE MINUTES AND YOU WON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH DISH SOAP AND WATER AND ILLEGALLY FLUSHING CONTAMINANTS INTO OUR WATER SUPPLY. I like the idea with the ratchet strap, very cool. Other than that there is some pretty questionable advice going on here that could end up costing folks much time and money and second go round repairs NOT TO MENTION THE HIGHLY ILLEGAL DUMPING OF CONTAMINANTS INTO OUR WATER SUPPLY. WHY NOT JUST DRAIN YOUR OIL DIRECTLY INTO THE RIVER AND CUT OUT THE MIDDLE MAN?

Using metric tools on a late model vehicle should not be a surprise to any home mechanic. Remove the bolts, tip the pan to remove the filter and as much of the ATF as possible, shimmie the pan left and right to remove the pan sliding away from the engine, no need to jack up the trans or move the exhaust to drop the pan. This was done on my 2012 GMC Sierra with a 6L80 trans. Slip the pan back in, then install the filter and make sure the filter neck fully seats into the trans, I reused the old gasket and then torque the bolts to specs. I have never had a autotrans pan leak. Walmart accepts used oil. I miss the old Ford C6 autotrans, the torque converter has a screw in plug to drain the fluid.

GM didn't do anyone any favors when they designed and located the oil pressure switch either on these Silverados.

It is stupid with the exhaust. They could have dropped the pipe lower or had the crossover either pushed further back or before the pan....

No wonder the dealership gave me the excuse of gm not recommending a filter change unless there was a leak.
@SnowDrift3 жыл бұрын
That’s really bad advice

@@SnowDrift yea it was the first and last time I take my truck to have the fluid changed. I even told them that didn't sound right, I've never heard of a filter not needing to be changed unless there's a leak. And just so I could confirm I wasn't crazy, when I got home and looked in the owners manual it specifically says trans fluid and filter change every 40k miles under severe conditions(pulling trailers, driving in dusty conditions, etc.)So I'll definitely be trying this process myself when the truck hits 75k-80k miles.

@@Draega007 I can effortlessly say it gets easier every time you do it. It’s really. Not bad. I can flush mine and change the filter and be back on the road in and hour

Agreed!!! I bolt pan reach in pull filter out the u have clearance for pan removal without jacking around the trans case nor exhaust, there are videos on the tube here with guys showing this process

Note: You can remove the pan without taking the exhaust off, I just did it to my 2013 silverado 6L80. Just gotta wiggle it a little bit and it will come out.

I replace it in the next few videos. It said it was a 6l90 so it was upgraded. installed at 150,000 and the truck just hit 200,000 miles and its still holding up great.
