ZF recommands only, but is not obliging anyone to do this procdure. In the Maintenance Manual of Jeep Grand cherokee is written that the oil has NOT to be changed during the entire life of the car. After asking at the dealership in Hamburg, how many kilometers or years is that LIFE TIME OF THE CAR, nobody could answer to me. So do not trust any car manufacturer, just respect the rules and recommendations of the OEM of the equipment and you can save a lot of money. ZF recommends only to change the furst oil at 80-120.000 km, which is ca. 4,5 liter out of 8,8 in the complete system. After that it has to be refreshed every 50-60.000 km.No flushes or exchanges of the entire oil in the system are required. Once your car has a bypass valve, you need to perform the after the first fill the temp increasing to 75 degrees Celsius and than to wait to cool it down to 35-50, than you can perform the second part with the refill of the rest and moving the different gears. All this I did already alone on my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2016 WK2 and after 10.000 km I am going to perform it again.

Great video. This is the same or very similar part I just used to change my 2017Alfa Romeo Giulia TI Sport Mopar # 68332462AA. Very hard to find directions or videos on service and this was it. I was nervous about running my car on jacks and refilling, but was able to get almost 5 quarts back in, which is roughly the amount that came out when I drained. My car has 80K on it and the fluid that came out was maybe a shade or two darker than the new fluid I put in. There were no error codes after service and car continues to un great. I am posting for other Giulia owners to hopefully find and use.

Nice video, pretty much every piece of info found on the internet in one place! Can I ask though, open question: 1. when is it best to drain the gearbox oil, @working temperature which I see it's at ~90.C or @cold temp, or other and why? 2. if changing when oil is higher than >75.C, this means that the thermostat will be open and also this could drain the cooler and lines, or not necessarily? I do not know exaclty were is this located and if normally oil will flow out only by gravitational means.. Does any body though about these and have a potential answer? 10x

The only way to get all oil out is by flushing - but I have not found procedure for flushing from manufacturer (ZF) of this transmission. This video is based on manufacturer recommended procedure - so I would just follow what they recommend. If really worry about keeping transmission oil cleaner - I would just recommend to change it a it sooner than recommended. BTW, BMW does not even recommend to change it - even though ZF recommends every 80,000-120,000km

I went the ZF site aftermarket.zf.com/go/en/aftermarket-portal/passenger-cars-and-lcv/catalogs/pdf-catalogs/ and got a lot of information. Turns out there is a BMW filter kit ($283.92) , A, Dodge kit ($195.00). The same kit is used on several, BMWs, Alpinas, Chryslers, Dodges, Ivecos, Jaguars, Land Rovers, Lancias, Maseratis nd Rolls-Royces. What a Pedigree !!! The refill kit contains 7 liters, the dealer just told me the dry fill is 10 liters. So it seems there are 3 liters that stay behind. The best price for a liter of Tran Fluid is 42.00,So if the oil is really very filthy I might consider a second drain and refill after so many months (cost $154.00).

Hello I own a 08 BMW X5 premium sport 4.8i. I purchased with 96,536. It now has 102,000 miles. The transmission now bangs from a slow start 1 into 2. Had the dealer check the transmission for $ 163.63 and was reported no leaks, no codes, and fluid at proper level. They said the fluid had a very bad burnt smell, and I should just replace the transmission at $ 8, 958.44. Really lol. Sometimes that could be normal, normally on a cold start it will be a rougher shifter from 1-2. Secondly. sometimes you will get a rough 1-2 shift if you are driving slow speeds, and let off the gas AS the car was about to upshift.

It is not as important as when installing new, and I don't think anybody would completely remove bolts just going around because pan would tilt and get oil all over. First pass is to loosen them and then remove in cross pattern - not necessarily exactly as my photo show when installing new.

Great informative video. ZF procedure has a step to overfill the transmission with 0.5lt of fluid, driving the car until the transmission temp gets to 75 degrees to open up the valve for cooling. @@NewRoad so old trany oil stuck in the coolant system contaminates new oil. Doesn't seem logical from ZF. The only way to safely empty those components is to remove the return pipe from the oil cooler at the trans union , and then pump into the trans refill hole with a sealed filling attachment . You pump ( between 8 and 9 litres ) into the trans until clean oil appears out of the cooler return . Of course the system will be totally full now , so a litre or so may then spill from the filler even though you now start the engine , with cooler re-attached and filler hole open once the engine starts up . The procedure in this video is good for about 4.6 litre . If you open the cooler return pipe after draining the pan , about another 1.5 litre can slowly drain an air will be sucked into the cooler pipe as the oil moves under gravity , but it's hit and miss on this one . I got 6 litre out with his latter method , which is quite enough to be honest . I had 100,000km of easy highway driving on a X5 and the oil was only tea coloured , but otherwise fine looking . System pulls a little better with more noticeable hold on hill decent in M3 and M4 gears . Auto geardown on idle up to intersections is a better hold . Didn't pull the old pan apart , but the flow rate would be better with the new filter , which does help with funtionality . Not much debris on the magnets . The boxes are well constructed and have few problems in normal use . You can of course do a double flush and drain off the new mix after a week of mixing around in the system and refill with another 4.6 or so if you don't want to remove cooler pipe union . You'll use 9 litres in all , but ditch 4.6/9th of your original new oil from the previous week . There are several approaches to what to do ...............

Yes, you will need new pan - since it has integrated filter in it.

Do you know what's the oil capacity for a Dodge Charger? Would it be the same 6 qts?
@NewRoad

I would say it is the same since it is the same transmission. I doubt you will need all 6 qts, but it is good to have just in case.

@@NewRoad thanks, I have been experiencing some weird progressive charging noise when I accelerate abruptly either from O or while in highway. I will give maintenance to the transmission to discard any lack of transmission fluid or filter being clogged.
