ZF 8HP Transmission Pan Replacement + Fluid Change on My F30 BMW 335i

In this video, I replacement the leaking transmission pan and changed the fluid in my ZF 8HP Transmission in my 2014 BMW 335i! Be prepared for a stripped fill plug when doing this job as I experienced doing this job as you see in the video.

Very interesting, good job. My daughter took her X5 to the dealer, they charged her $2000, yes, $2000 dollars for the same job. The dealer is a total scam. They charged $90/qt for oil and then said they used 7 qts. total BS.

Followed this and thank goodness. I got those nipple extractors and it was a pain getting that fill plug out. Also stripped the drain plug (the plastic just snapped when trying to remove it), and ended up drilling through it to drain the transmission fluid lmao. Thank goodness the kit comes with a new drain plug. Literal pain getting it done, but should be smoother next time. Thank you for the walkthrough!

Rear world diy. I would suggest when you unbolting fill plug tap Allen socket with hamer make sure it bottoms out than take crack at it 👍🏻

Just for everyone's reference I had my ZF 8HP serviced at the Dodge dealer. They used a BG Flush and Fluid replacement and its working great. They didn't tell me they weren't using OEM fluid but from what I have research BG seems to be very popular in the auto service industry.

BG is snake oil for dealerships, as a way to stack fat profit margins over OE fluids.

@kalani1987 BG has a fluid that is fully compatible with the ZF gearbox, they have a couple different fluids only one is actually recommended by ZF. I cannot remember the exact model.

Ver informative video, how has the transmission been post fluid and filter replacement? At 60k miles would have expected the fluid to be close to green but it seemed brown which is odd.

Transmission has been running great, just like before, since I did this. I was also kind of surprised it was pretty brown at only 60k miles.

I linked the whole kit I used with the exact only in the description! I ended up only using like 3-4 bottles I think. And from I’ve seen, this service only needs to be done around every 100k miles.

Stay in each gear longer, rev to 2k at certain points, research this. Don’t put under body cover on until check for leaks.

Hey mate. I have a f30 328i 2013 in the uk. But all I can find is the white bottles with the light grey stickers on. Fcp euro have the white with dark blue sticker labelled bottles. Have you had any issues with the fluid you used?

Yes. I ended up putting more in with the engine on off camera. After the first initial fill with engine off, turn on the engine for a few minutes and then do another fill until starts pouring out again.

How long did you idle the car running the engine in order to meet the 40 to 50 degrees Celsius I don’t have a scanner to see the temperature I think I will just base it on how many minutes to idle the car to to reach 40 to 45 degrees?

The outside temperature will be an influencing factor as well as how long the car sat there after previously been driven. I wouldn't risk it and I'd just buy a scan tool. It only costs around 130 for Launch Creader Elite for BMW

I just got 7 liters of the ZF 8 and is the exact same label as yours. Is it FULLY SYNTHETIC? The other label says High Performance Synthetic...yours says High Performance Oil for cars. If I'm going through the trouble of changing it, might as well use synthetic. Was the car still running in Park when you added more fluid?

if the pan is coming off, and you have new pan to install, why panic if you cannot remove the fill bolt, just remove the drain bolt, let it drain out. That theory only applies if you are only changing your oil only and not your pan. Then you would be in a pickle. Something to think about. If i am wrong on this, please explain.

Because how would I put the new oil in once I drain the oil and put the new pan on if I can’t get the fill bolt off? The transmission would have no fluid making the car in drivable until I can get the fill bolt out. If you remove the fill bolt first, that ensures you will be able to fill the transmission with oil. Or in my case if you aren’t able to get it off and end up rounding it, the car is still drivable since it still has the old oil so then you could take it to shop if need be or if it’s your only car you could still drive it if you can’t get a way to get the fill bolt out till awhile after.

It’s ZF. All F-gen BMWs use ZF transmissions. From what I’ve seen. The one in my E90 328i is GM transmission.

Because the filter needs to be replaced with the oil, and the filter is part of the pan so they make you replace the whole thing.

Did you buy the ZF oil pan or the BMW oil pan? When I see it at FCP, I can see a difference between the picture of the ZF oil pan and the one that says GENUINE BMW... it's just the design of the interior of the filter and I don't know what to buy. Thank you!!!!

How much fluid can you expect to drain out? The entire system takes 9 qtrs. but if your just doing the pan I would expect you will only get about 4 maybe 5 qtrs.

You’re spot on. Only about 4-5 quarts drained out. As a result, you only end up using 5 of the 7 bottles you get with the service kit I used in the video from FCP Euro
