Thank you so much, I was at Toyota today getting my oil changed and tires rotated on my 2008 Tundra ( Wife had a bunch of coupons, saved a lot of money), I asked them for the price Toyota wanted for changing the transmission fluid and to change the coolant, I am glad I had my cane with me, the prices floored me, I actually told them :”YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” I bought “Toyota Coolant” there, (should not have $31.00 a gallon) and will flush tonight AND thanks to your video, I will change my transmission fluid this weekend. Now I see why if this job is done correctly by either a Toyota service shop or your trusted local mechanic the cost will run upwards from a couple hundred dollars to over three hundred, the latter is what the dealer will charge in my town here in Arizona. I was hoping to see what the dipstick reading was at until I realized your model year likely doesn't have a dipstick. My 2003 4.7L Tundra does have the stick. Overall a very in depth well published DIY video. Cheers Mate!

Awesome video. Many thanks! Edit: I got as far as snapping three bolts on my trans fluid pan. Filled it back the 3.25 quarts I drained and called it a day for now. I want to caution anyone thinking of doing this and going hog wild trying to remove the pan - DO NOT DO IT!! You will find yourself in a world of pain. I talked to a few shops today and the consensus is there is absolutely no reason to ever pull the pan or change the screen inside. Other than that, really appreciate the video.

@@DIYJIM Another question: is there no risk idling the truck and cycling through the gears with either too little or too much ATF? I think I'm going to try the gravity feed method rather than buying a pump. BTW, the link to your pump is broken - perhaps that one is no longer available. Thanks again.
@DIYJIM Жыл бұрын
@@benschmolze1266 sorry I do not want to tell you something wrong. But I would guess there is always a risk of idling to long if you have to little or too much ATF. You can look for a different pump on Amazon. I’ll have to see if I can fix my link. Thanks for watching and letting me know my link is not working.
@Mattschindig Жыл бұрын
I would try and spray all the bolts with some Kroil penetrating oil and let those soak a bit especially if you have high mileage or live in a rust prone environment and not use a impact until you can loosen them with a socket and ratchet. Also he shows in the video that he put an extra quart in to probably help with the peace of mind of not running it low, but in reality with the truck just running in short intervals while draining a few quarts out a few at a time which like he showed by adding one in the beginning wouldn't hurt. Transmission gears aren't going to be going Ludacris speed at idle so no worries.

Thanks for the video. I have a 2007 tundra 4.7 v8. Same as yours. The truck has alot of miles, 180,000. I have no idea of when if ever the transmission fluid has been changed. The transmission makes a clunk when shifting to overdrive. I checked all the other known causes, engine & transmission mounts and drive shaft. All that was good but when I checked fluid it was very low. I took off pan and put new filter and replaced just the 4 quarts like dealer will do. My question is it a bad idea to dump all the fluid out of transmission with alot of miles ? I keep hearing not to do it or could have slipping problems. I'm in the middle of just changing filter and the 4 quarts but now thinking maybe should do your flush. The fluid looks black as motor oil. Didn't see much metal or any signs of damage in pan. Sorry for the book I wrote you! 😅

I got this point, but you still drained it from the hose line to complete flash out the dirty oil ,but you did not specified how many quarts you drained out from there. You show that you have 11 quarts in the bucket. It means ,you just drained out in the hose linethe 5quarts that you put it in after the first drained out.

Over the years of working on motorcycles and clutch covers its not a bad idea when dealing with a pan/cover that has a lot of bolts to just grab a piece of cardboard and draw a outline of in this case the transmission pan and filter and punch out holes with a screwdriver and place the bolts in those holes. That way if you do have a longer bolt you wont be searching the internet and panicking. Plus its never a bad idea to put bolts back in the same threaded hole they came out of.

So, I didn't do a full flush. I just did a partial change at the pan. I had 4 quarts come out while the tranny was cold, so I put 4 quarts back in. I heated the pan to 120-125 and ended up having an entire quart drain back out at the level drain. Has me a little nervous, but I think that whoever did it previously put a little too much in.

You should have shifted through the entire gear sequence when the engine was pushing out transmission fluid. There were plenty of used fluids remaining in the torque converter if you missed this process.
