Yes. You need the o ring

This is silly. It's easier to remove the complete water pump and housing. There's also the bypass pipe in back that has an oring that should be replaced. And why not replace the thermostat while you're at it. And if the car has AC, you have to remove the three bolts and lower the compressor before you can even get the housing off. Doing it like the video risks leaks afterwards from the bypass pipe oring or the housing oring.

Not sure what year and motor size you are talking about but my 98 with the 1.8L I did NOT have to do anything with the AC compressor to get the entire water pump and housing off as a unit. Just remove the small retaining bolt that holds the bypass pipe on at the back of the housing before removing the remaining 4 bolts that hold the pump and housing in. It only took 15 min to remove the whole unit once the coolant was drained and I removed the thermostat housing. It was all done from the top I didn't have to get under the vehicle at all
