The one caveat I have, I don't mean to be prude, is when you say to rotate your tires crisscross make sure your tires aren't directional before you do that, if they are it's just front to back

Some tires have treads which are supposed to point in a specific direction. If you rotated the tires crisscross while maintaining the direction the tire is supposed to face then rims would have to be inside out. Hopefully that makes sense.

I almost agree with you (i think its worth getting premium oil). That said, I think you illustrate the most important thing. That's actually changing your oil. I work at an auto parts store, and it's pretty easy to tell the difference between between a car that has had its oil changed regularly and one that hasn't. you really can't tell the difference between a conventional oil car and a premium oil car. Unless it is a mercedes, but that's a story for another comment.
@maxst2

All depends on application. Run a high performance engine on conventional... it just won't last.
@Hookahitter
@Hookahitter 5 жыл бұрын
Its more important to change oil before it breaks down. Worked for major oil co. for many years, conventional oil is all the same and breaks down at the same rates. The additives in the oil are the true performance changers. Synthetic is different monster of course. Oil filters are made to a vehicle's specifications, any change to those could cause engine pressure issues, poor performance/gas mileage and long term engine damage so right part number and your good no matter the brand. Turning personal experience into evidence to support a claim is the real problem, at its least its bad science, at its worst its 4000 religions that plague our society and our progress as a species.

Another good tip would be obtaining an oil drain plug with a magnet on it. It will also show you engine wear by the particles sticking to it. Fram has a paper cartridge in their oil filters that almost immediately collapse and the oil goes through the bypass without being filtered. A guy I worked with years ago, cut about 5 oil filters open with an exhaust pipe cutting tool and explained it to me.

Also, they have premium oil now that is supposed to be good for 10,000 miles and filters up to 7,500 miles. I personally don't think it's good to go past 4 - 5 thousand miles between oil changes because of the engine wear, dirt and crud that just keeps circulating in your engine.

Good job Cody, your grandfather taught you well. I am 70+, have always took care of my maintenance. The first service on each vehicle I wrote the particulars on the fender well. I have owned 25 vehicles, no issues, except I had to replace one electric fan on a Buick. Two things I do, I use an air grease gun on my Chevy Avalanche, 11 zerks. There is a fitting on the drive shaft, did you check that?, I check the differential fluid also. My Ford Taurus Limited only needs oil and filter. I use K&N air filters. I never rotate tires, never saw a reason and get expected mileage , I never neglect tire health. I think premature tire wear is due to folks turning wheels in a dead stop position on abrasive concrete. I use Puralator oil filters, there is a reason. I buy Mobil 1 at Sams Club. I want Amsoil, but they would rather you become a dealer than sell you what you need. I use ramps And wheel chocks. This is my third Ford Taurus limited, it is an awesome vehicle, highly under rated by folks who write about vehicles after one cruise down the road. My second , 2015 FTL was totaled by a huge 8 point Buck, the buck survived, I want to sue him for damages, but he high tailed back into the woods. I hope to do this for 30+ more years, God willing. Do you think I should use Loctite red on the oil filter threads?

Two more pro-tips. 1) Always make sure the rubber gasket comes off with the old oil filter. It will sometimes stay on the engine and if you don't realize it, and put the new filter on, oil will go everywhere when you crank the engine. 2) Be careful about keeping old, dirty shop towels around. They can generate heat and cause spontaneous combustion.

tip number 9! see, i knew there would be something in here! very good suggesting on the door maintenance. never really thought of that. That's going on my list of things to do when i do my own "mini service". its pretty much what you do. I have a few additions. I also all the seals like around the doors and the trunk and so forth. I check that all my lights are working (i check them pretty much every time i use them but doesnt hurt). I check my tyre (Im English, we use a y) treads to make sure they are still legal, i check my brake pads/shoes/disks and replace where necessary I'm lucky in regards to getting rid of old oil. my brother works for a large company whos workshop has a big old oil tanker and we have a large container around by the garage which he swaps after about 20 or so oil changes (we all do it round the back of my fathers garage as its the best location for us all to do it)

Well Cody I can say after 35 years of being a heavy equipment mechanic that running synthetic oils are very worth the money. My Volkswagen will not warranty the engine if your are not using synthetic oil. I also worked for a trucking company that got full engine warranty after being a test company that did not change oil in the engines for 600,000 miles only changed the filters at regular scheduled intervals and just kept the oil at the top level not the add mark. We had no issues. Also running synthetic oil. I am fairly new to your page and you do a great job. Thanks for being you.

As a professional auto technician... Always use the manufacture recommended oil, at the interval stated in your service manual. Every manufacture has their standards for oil. Euro standard for 5w40 (used in euro gas engines) is different than us standard for 5w40. Euro diesels. LL03 5w30 synthetic. Most US diesels run 15w40. DexOS for gm. Also, the only oil additive ive ever seen that actually works its the BG MOA additive. Most are just snake oil, and is nothing more than viscous synthetic oil. Synthetic and convention oil is the same. The different is that synthetic is more refined. The petroleum molecule chains are more equal in size than conventional. But the oil is the same. Synthetic also has cleaners and detergents in it to clean and capture deposits. Crude does not. Additives are not needed with synthetic oil
@jonmatney9584

Conventional oil has detergents and cleaners in it too. Synthetic is just more refined and doesn't have as many impurities. They ran non detergent oils years ago and it created lots of engine sludge.
@MrOEFVeteran
@MrOEFVeteran 5 жыл бұрын
@@jonmatney9584 not nearly to the level that synthetic oils do. Its the same with gas. 89 octane gas has some cleaners in it, but premium has more. Thats why engines that run premium gas and synthetic oil (with the exception of german direct injected gas engines) run cleaner

I believe the additive he uses is to keep it tacky and keep the bearings oiled for dry starts, if you put a lot of miles on it probably won't matter much, if you start it and run it for a couple miles it will add to your miles and reduce wear.

On that last comment about giving a lawnmower to a friend or neighbor. I once gave a friend who was poor a wonderful down jacket because he didn't have something warm to wear. A month later he wasn't wearing it he gave it away and kept wearing is old ragged cold one. I wasn't happy to say the least because I could have given it to someone who would have really cherished it. Trying to help a family who always relied on taxpayers to live. When some are given money for nothing and live in rent control their entire life don't take care of things. Years later this same person moved into a brand new rent controlled apartment his apartment was nicer than mine at the time one year later his apartment looked as if it was 20 years old. The moral of this story is if the govt gives money or property for several generations they have no idea the actual value of things. His rent was 200 a month which included heat lights and air conditioning including wireless internet the fair market value for that apartment was 700 at the time he didn't have a clue the tax payer picked up that 500 he didn't pay.

One of the best oil change items I ever put on my trucks is the "no spill" oil plug. It replaces the oil pan plug with a new plug that is self sealing, and to change oil you just hand screw on a tube to start the oil flow. Changes my disgusting black diesel oil with no mess and no tools. I love them. Stops the oil from getting all over the frame. Mine came from 'No Spill Systems'. There are different brands but I have been happy with theirs.

Been around tons of racecar mechanics or just any mechanics in general my whole life and the number one rule to a good running engine is to have good oil. The reason why there is cheap oil is because most people don't actually get underneath their vehicle to change oil. They just take it somewhere to get it change for them and dont worry about what engine oil there getting.

I have a cousin that worked at a tire shop for many years and he explained to me the reason for keeping your tires on the same sides. When a steel belted radial tire spins with force it bends or stretches the wires inside the tire side wall. This only happens to the wheels with power (rear wheels on a rear wheel drive and front wheels on a front wheel drive) so if you swap them diagonally the tire that normally spins clock wise in now spinning counter clock wise and can now (bird cage) and break strands of wires. Swapping the fronts to the back and back to the front, keeping them on the same side will keep your tires spinning in the same direction and you still get even wear.

Couple things: When you're taking the tires off to rotate them, break the lugs loose before you jack up the vehicle, especially if you don't have an air wrench. When you put the wheels back on, don't use the air wrench, the last thing you want if you're on the side of a road with a flat is to not be able to get the tire off because you gave it one too many braaps! I also take the filler cap off and very slightly loosen the oil filter before I pull the drain plug so that I know I'll be able to get them off before I run all of the oil out.

Kinda like how Fram used to be a high end filter, but the quality went down hill as their advertising budget went higher. Some cars/trucks we own and operate will only get Mobil 1. That's because they are the only oil that meets the requirements of the manufacturer. (our VW comes to mind. 0w40 Mobil 1. It's pushing 185k on the engine and runs quiet.)

To be fair, replacing the stock steel wheels with forged aluminum alloy wheels of the same diameter will, on average, save you 40% of the weight of the wheel, which could improve fuel efficiency. Not trying to tell you what to do, but it was slightly disingenuous to say that replacing your wheels is all for show. Granted, most who replace their wheels with alloys increase the rim diameter which negates any benefit they might have gained, but there is a potential benefit to performance in alloy wheels. Love your videos, I always learn a lot. Keep up the amazing work you do. Much love to you and yours!

I go to start the truck after changing the oil and I got a low oil pressure alarm. Turned the truck on and off a couple more times, and kept getting the alarm. Finally something clicked in my head that I might have used an old filter. That was 150,000 miles ago. 2011 f150 with 323000 miles still running strong.

Two went to the junkyard after accidents, three got parked in the back yard waiting for expensive repairs. One parked in the back yard because it's antique. Three still being driven. We put 957k miles on those 11 cars ourselves, most were bought used, with an overall mileage (PO and us) of 1.8 million miles

ALSO! I hate when people claim "Fram sucks" blah blablah... people think a better more expensive oil filters better but in reality it's actually not because the more "expensive better filters" have more cleets in them making oil harder to pass through then you get less oil pressure to the rest of the engine, when that happens the bypass valve in the filter will open allowing crap into your oil jernols. Then your engine wears out faster. True fact! Look on any wicks filter or K&N garbage and they will tell you to change the filters WAYYY more often... so wasting your money but I know there's all those "pros" out there claiming i'm dumb and on and on.

I would be happy to change my filter and oil more often than to replace an engine because I used cheap filters and oil. I agree with them bypassing but what is the difference if the Fram lets it pass through the filter media or a higher priced filter lets it pass through the bypass? I was told by a somewhat reputable source that automotive filters bypass within the first five hundred or a thousand miles. True or not I don't know. It was suggested to change your filter halfway through your oil cycle which is what I've done for years and it seems to work.

Hi Cody, I have a story to tell you. When I was in my early 20's I did all my own servicing because I could ( dad made sure that I knew how to do all the regular services as soon as I passed my driving test). I was due to go on a long journey so I decided that I would treat my car and put it in for a service from the Ford garage (my car was a Ford) I picked my car up and paid the bill and set off on my journey, I had only gone about 2 to 3miles when I heard a horrendous noise and my car came to a stop. On investigation, I found that the oil plug had not been put back in or not tightened and was not near my car. I got on a bus and went back to the garage and was in the middle of an argument when a man came up to me and asked the location of the pit my car had been on. The garage was not going to take responsibility for the damage until he pointed out to them that he was an off duty policeman and he had found my oil sump plug on the side of the pit. The garage did pay for repairs to my car but it never was as good as it had been before. If it had not been for that policeman I doubt they would have admitted responsibility or paid for repairs. As a young man, I had been moved on by police and did not have a good opinion of the police. That changed overnight and from then on I had respect for the police and always helped others if I could.

As an engine builder/mechanic I am going to suggest not to use any additives until the engine is officially broke in. New vehicles of course. Cody, You should know some manufacturers say NOT to pre fill the filter. The reason seems to be the fact that when you pour the oil in the filter that is the filtered area which means everything you pour in is unfiltered. New oil is not always filtered to the standards of your car filter and can actually have small amounts of contamination in it. Doesn't matter of course if you don't fill the filter because then the filter will catch irregularities. I think it was CAT and "adept ape" that brought that to my attention.

I used to work at a gas station and this clueless older woman came through and asked me for help checking her oil. She had a newer car and it did have a dipstick but there were no markings on it (I guess they're making decorative dipsticks these days, wouldn't want potential customers being able to service their own cars!). That alone was cause for concern, but was overshadowed by the fact that there was maybe a half inch of oil on the stick. She had an oil leak and practically no oil left in her engine. She told me she got this car after her old car's engine exploded because it didn't have any oil in it...

Wow, I'm amazed Lucas survived a used oil analysis. I know i wouldn't run that stuff in my lawnmower with the used oil analysis i've read. And while their engine additive may not do any harm, I certainly don't believe its going to do any good either, if anything it's just diluting the good oil your using in your car and thickening it up a little more. I'd argue with most modern name brand engine oils, you don't need an oil additive at all, they've got pretty much everything needed.

Here's a few more tips; Always double-check that when you remove the old filter, the gasket does not stick to the oil filter housing. If you spill motor oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, etc. sawdust works great at soaking it up, especially on porous concrete surfaces where shop rags and towels may not be sufficient. As far as filter tightness, most filters say right on the filter to thread it on until the gasket makes contact with the filter housing, and then give it another 1/4 or 1/2 turn. If you can't fill your oil filter with new oil because it is mounted horizontally or vertically with the mounting surface facing down, then run your car for 20 seconds, turn it off and check the dipstick again. If the filter is mounted vertically with the mounting surface facing down, like on many Subarus, remove the drain plug, poke a few holes in the top of the filter with a nail, rotate the tires, then remove the filter now that the oil drained out. Otherwise it gets everywhere, and there is a drain hole on the filter housing, but it still puddles up unless you do it this way. Obviously check tire pressures and all of your fluid levels and top them off with the proper fluid the manufacturer calls for. Some cars may need DOT3 brake fluid, some may need DOT4. Many Fords use Mercon Transmission Fluid in their power steering system. GM vehicles need Dex-Cool anti-freeze. Always make sure you're putting in the right fluid. Rotate your tires in a criss-cross pattern ONLY if they are non-directional tires AND are not staggered. Directional tires are easily identifiable arrows on the sidewalls of the tires and the word "rotation", indicating the direction that the tire should rotate. Sometimes staggered tires are not easily identifiable to an average Joe because the rim size and sidewall height is the same on the front and rear axle, but they may have a different width. Sometimes you may even have a car, usually a sports car, where you cannot rotate the tires because they are directional and staggered. But before you do change your oil, decide if it's worth it to change your own oil. Most of the cost of having an oil change done at a shop is just the cost of the oil and filter itself. The mechanic is paid almost nothing for doing it and many places do oil changes at a net cost, mostly because they offer low prices to get you in the door and hope to sell you other services. Consider that the shop is taking on the liability in case something goes wrong. If the drain plug or the threads in the pan strip, do you have a tap and die kit to fix it as well as the ability to remove the oil pan? Not to mention that a skilled, professional mechanic will give you a thorough inspection and may catch some issues that aren't easily spotted by the untrained eye. There are also some cars that require a scan tool to reset an oil change reminder indicator, which you don't have access to. If you do a tire rotation on some vehicles with Tire Pressure Monitoring System like GMs, you may have a TPMS malfunction because the system needs to be reset and the new tire locations need to be programmed into the monitoring system. Finally, you may have a small issue with your car that you recognize but cannot diagnose, or even an issue you don't know that exists which the mechanic may be able to identify and fix, free of charge. Case and point; Let's say the mechanic is doing an oil change on your vehicle and while doing the tire rotation, he notices that your front brake pads are wearing very unevenly. The untrained eye may not even notice that. But he knows it's a sticking slide pin, he removes it, hits it with a dye grinder, greases it up and reinstalls it in 3 minutes and never charges the customer. Or maybe you mention that your car won't start sometimes and he notices that the throttle cable just needs to be adjusted - any mechanic with integrity isn't going to charge you fora 2 minute fix like that. So maybe it's worth just bringing it to a shop for some people.

this is full of useful information that too many guys may seem redundant but to me i am almost taking notes. alot of knowledge knowadays is lost because not many people like cody will take the time to just go through and explain for the uninitiated. Hell it took me until last year to realize that Anti-Freeze and Coolant are the same thing. A thing I should have known but never found out until someone just told me.

Good video... from a former GM Tech - GM recommended crossing the non-drive wheels - on front wheel drive, cross rear and front straight back, rear wheel, cross the front and rear straight forward & on 4 wheel drive - both front and rear straight back/front...

don't forget to make sure the gasket on the old filter is there when you drop it. Double gaskets bad! LOL
