That cover plate looks waaaayyy better than mine. Rust belt driver here, my bolts and cover plate are looking super rusted out. Gonna take some blaster to it for a few days. Considering buying a new cover plate along with new bolts and gasket. My only concern is that that hopefully the new cover and gasket will fit well with the old diff body and not give me any leaks!

Ah yes good idea! I guess the only drawback is not getting to put eyes on the gears and what has accumulated on the magnet and to clean it. Definitely a good option for anyone concerned about snapping the bolts though (what a pain!), thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the great video, have 2 trailblazers I have wasted the money on drain plugs in the diff covers, when changed the fluid once. I think all of the fill plugs are way too tight and no one ever changes it at the correct interval.

i have the same car. your oil change video really helped a lot . been thinking about doing what being shown in this video but i want to know what are the benefits of changing your diff fluid?
@annao4621
@annao4621 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you that is great to hear! GM considers the diff fluid to be a lifetime fluid, but it is still surrounding moving metal gears that wear over time (like a transmission). So one benefit is to remove the old oil with suspended metal particulates that may accelerate wear and tear on the differential gears (preventative maintenance).

Great video Anna! Couple things I thought of. 1. after many years of working on TBs and many other cars about 15 years ago after constantly ripped up hands it dawned on me I should start wearing rubber gloves! They have made a HUGE difference since and saved my hands a ton of cuts and wear and tear! And I know that is especially important to a gal!=-) Also, the tubing on the gear oil bottle was a great work around and idea but thought a piece of duct tape wrapped around where you put the tubing on would hold it much better so could put more pressure on it with less chance of a mess on the ground. Plus, when you do the next bottle can just switch the pour spout from one bottle to the next! Other then that, great job! Also was wondering if at 140k your TB started to make noises in the drive train in the back? I have owned two of them over the past 16 years and have one currently with 105k and other sold with 155k. So have worked on many aspects of them for many years(cars have never been in a shop other then for tires) So was wondering if that is what brought you to this and if it fixed any humming you might have had? Thanks and God bless!
@annao4621
@annao4621 3 жыл бұрын
What a great suggestion about securing the tubing and just switching the cap to the second bottle. Thank you! I haven't experienced any humming or noise in the drivetrain and am not sure what that might be. I'm sorry! I think I just stumbled upon a ChrisFix video on changing the rear diff and realized I'd never done it. If you find out what the noise is, please let us know!

@@annao4621 Actually figured it out. Ended up being a separated tire! Replaced that and all smooth now. =-) Have you also done the transfer case on your trailblazer and the front differential? Those are typically done around the same time. Was not sure if yours was two or four wheel drive. Mine have all been 4wd. Found a good deal on the actual GM transfer case fluid also if your interested. Also was wondering if yours has the cold air intake valve on the side of the engine? The first one I had was an 04(not sure what year yours is) and had that and it went bad I think 3 times! The thing ran a ton better after replacing it though and got better gas MPG. Anyway, something to check at the miles you have on yours and maybe even just go ahead and replace. My 02 I have now which was a barn find with 60k a couple years ago does not have one! Nice thing. Either way, thought I would mention that also since its an easy fix and makes a difference and they seem to go out a ton and were an issue with the mid year ones. You also may consider getting a knock off coil replacement pack set also if you have not already. I did that about 30k ago and it REALLY improved the idle and smoothness of the engine. All of these are just stuff off the top of my head after 16 years!LOL There was muvh more but those are the ones that seemed to really make an impact or be a weak point. Like the gauges going out! Fixed that also over the years and is common on GMs. Anyway, thanks for the response and will watch for any of your new videos! Have not done a wiper motor and hope I do not have to.=-) Seriously though, have thought about how maybe I should start doing the same when I do a fix on it just to help people. Have thought about it over the years but just have never done it.(just did a water pump for example and found a little hack that was nice so could have done that one) Other then that, thanks for the response and let me know if any of this helps!=-)

A little over 200,000! GM considers the diff fluid a lifetime fluid and doesn't suggest a maintenance interval. My Haynes manual suggests changing every 60,000 miles though.

I am not sure! Advance Auto and Rock Auto have both ring gear sizes listed for for the EXT (and the short wheel base like mine) and I can't tell if the gaskets are the same size. Both have 10 bolt holes though, so I'm thinking they are the same. Sorry I can't be of more help!

10ft then 20ft lbs? Correct what would happen if i over tighten them would it cause the gasket to leak?
@annao4621
@annao4621 3 жыл бұрын
Yep! Or risk warping the cover. Not sure how much of a concern that is in this context, especially with a metal gasket. If anyone reading the comments knows, please share! Also, FWIW, the Haynes manual lists the torque specs for the 8.6" ring gear differential cover bolts at 18 ft-lbs rather than 20 ft-lbs like mine.

@ryan McIntyre 💪💪💪 I dug it out to try and answer that very question to figure out the gasket question, and it does not say! But here's a forum thread that says the EXT has the 8.6" ring gear: www.trailvoy.com/threads/how-to-figure-out-size-of-rear-end-i-have.26346/ Not sure how to verify though 🤔

The gas mileage is not great. I usually get about 16-17 mpg on average with mostly city driving. Long trips on the interstate get 20 mpg. No major problems in all this time! Lots of little things of course, especially in the last 2-3 years. The biggest issue I've had was needing to replace the torque converter because it would chatter in lock up under load or disengage, but I could still drive it. Had that done at around 205k miles. Other minor things include the thermostat, gear shifter linkage bushing, secondary air injection, VVT solenoid, alternator, windshield wiper pulse board, idler pulley, valve cover gasket, O2 sensors, end links... There are more but I can't think of them right now. How long have you had yours? Have you run into any problems?
