Curtis Childs is the director of OffTheLeftEye at the Swedenborg Foundation. While obtaining his degree in communication studies from Oakland University, Curtis experienced an internal battle with depression that led him to question God and his lifelong interest in Swedenborgian theology. After a period of intense suffering, he recovered from his depression with the help of modern medicine, therapy, and a return to the spiritually uplifting messages he found in Swedenborg’s writings. Now, Curtis is applying his education and desire to help others find peace through Swedenborg’s insights by producing and hosting this weekly webcast.
Rev. Dr. Jonathan S. Rose is the series editor of the New Century Edition, an ongoing project that incorporates the latest scholarship to produce a modern, accessible translation of Emanuel Swedenborg’s theological works. Holder of a B.A. and a M.Div. in religion and a M.A. and a Ph.D. in Latin, he has worked for years in the study of Neo-Latin and in Swedenborgian research. He was both chaplain and a tenured professor of religion and sacred languages at Bryn Athyn College before taking on his current position with the Swedenborg Foundation.
Karin Childs is a scriptwriter and online moderator for offTheLeftEye. Her spiritual growth is largely informed by a lifelong Swedenborgian education. While raising five children with her husband, Jon, she applied her love of the Bible and Swedenborg's writings to volunteer work, creating Sunday school programs and church pageants. It was Swedenborg's works that Karin turned to for solace after the devastating death of their oldest daughter. For 17 years, she and Jon ran a small Swedenborgian publishing company to help others dealing with loss and grief, and wrote three novels herself. Now, Karin puts her compassion into action through the work of the Swedenborg Foundation.
Chelsea Odhner is a production manager and scriptwriter for offTheLeftEye. A lifelong Swedenborgian, Chelsea's interest in Swedenborg's spiritual work intensified in her early twenties when she realized she wanted to make conscious changes in her life and behaviors. When paired with her study of yoga practice and philosophy, Chelsea found Swedenborg’s worldview connected all the spokes of different faiths and philosophical perspectives that she values. Initially interested in pursuing a career in integrative medicine, her passion for poetry, writing, and music led her to focus on serving the spiritual side of health and well-being.

I loved that part that talked about how when we reach our spiritual community in the other life we feel like we are coming home because our heart has already been there. It reminds me of the chorus for that Mark Cohn song that says, "One day, there's love for the lonely. One day, they'll walk in the sun. One day, rest for the weary, rest for the weary ones." That section was very moving to me.

I'm not sure if this was already covered in the video, but here's a nice number from True Christianity about two friends from earth who lived in different communities visiting each other: 386. The second memorable occurrence. One morning after I woke up, I saw two angels coming down from heaven. One was coming from the southern part of heaven and the other from the eastern part. They were both in carriages drawn by white horses. The carriage that was carrying the angel from the southern part of heaven was shining like silver. The carriage that was carrying the angel from the eastern part of heaven was shining like gold. The reins the angels were holding in their hands were flashing with a fiery light like the rising sun. That is how the two angels looked from far away. When they came closer, however, they no longer looked as though they were in carriages. They were simply in their own angelic form, which is human. The one who came from the eastern part of heaven was wearing shining clothes that were deep red. The one who came from the southern part of heaven was wearing clothes that were sky blue. When they reached the lower regions below the heavens, they ran toward one another as if each were trying to be first [to reach the other]. They hugged and kissed each other. I heard that when these two angels lived in the world they formed a bond of deep friendship. Yet now one was in the eastern part of heaven and the other was in the southern part. The eastern heaven holds angels who focus on love from the Lord; the southern heaven holds angels who focus on wisdom from the Lord. After the angels spent a while talking about the magnificent things in their heavens, a question came up in their conversation about whether the essence of heaven is love or wisdom. They agreed right away that each one relates to the other; but they were discussing which one was the origin of the other. [2] The angel from the heaven of wisdom asked the other angel, "What is love?" The other angel replied, "The love that originates from the Lord as a sun is the vital heat that angels and people have - it is the underlying reality of their lives. The derivatives of love are called feelings. Feelings produce perceptions and therefore thoughts. It flows from this that wisdom starts out as love, and therefore thought starts out as the feeling related to that love. Looking at the derivatives in sequence makes it possible to see that thought is nothing but the form of the feeling. This is not generally known, because thoughts exist in light but feelings exist in heat, and therefore people reflect on their thoughts but not on their feelings. "The fact that thought is nothing but the form of a feeling related to some love can be illustrated by the fact that speech is nothing but the form of sound. In fact, sound corresponds to feeling and speech corresponds to thought. Feelings make sounds, and thoughts speak. "This point would become crystal clear if someone were to say, 'Take the sound out of your speech. ' Would there be any speech left? Also, Take the feeling out of your thinking. Would there be any thinking left? "Clearly then, the most important ingredient in wisdom is love. Therefore the essence of the heavens is love and their form is wisdom. Or to put it another way, the heavens exist as the result of divine love and they take shape as the result of divine love acting through divine wisdom. Therefore, as we said before, each one does indeed relate to the other. " [3] At the time there was a spirit with me who had recently arrived [in the spiritual world], who heard all this and asked, "Is it the same for goodwill and faith, since goodwill relates to feeling and faith relates to thinking?" "It is absolutely the same," the angel replied. "Faith is nothing but a formation of goodwill, exactly as speech is nothing but a formation of sound. In fact, faith is formed from goodwill in the same way that speech is formed from sound. Up in heaven we even know the mode of formation, but there is no time to lay that out now. " The angel added, "When I say 'faith,' I mean a spiritual faith whose life and spirit come solely from the Lord by way of goodwill, since goodwill is spiritual, and faith is spiritual through goodwill. Faith without goodwill, then, is a mere earthly faith, and mere earthly faith is dead; it unites itself to mere earthly feelings, which are nothing but cravings. " [4] The angels expressed these thoughts in a spiritual way. Spiritual speech includes thousands of nuances that earthly language cannot express. In fact, surprising to say, those nuances are not even thinkable with the ideas of earthly thought. After the angels had said all this they left. As they were going back to their own heavens, stars appeared around their heads. When they got farther away from me, they looked as though they were in carriages again, as before.

This is really true! I astral project almost every night for over 20 years and when I come out of my body I will find myself with people ( spirits ) good or bad depending on where my mind is more preoccupied. That's one reason I love this Swedenborg stuff because I can relate to his truths about the afterlife and what we do while we are out of our bodies.

I have been struggling with having to break ties with others for reasons that I don’t have much in common with them anymore. I contribute it to my becoming true to myself and have to let go of what’s not serving my truth. It’s rough and liberating. I see myself changing....radically even, over time. Being widowed radically transformed me, for example. What I can tolerate in the way of the dark is very low, where I used to be naturally pretty goth. My biggest concern though, is that I know I am kinder now, spiritually minded, and far more compassionate. I am also, though, more pessimistic regarding life here, intolerant of unkind or even shallow people (who I used to not care about at all)...and struggle with anxiety, depression and a deep desire to be done with the struggle here far, far too often. I worry I am setting myself on a bad path, even though I am fervently, consciously trying for the opposite. So frustrating.

Jhone D, the first thing I want to say is, have mercy on yourself. You have suffered a great loss, and the pain comes in waves, and shifts and changes over time. I think you need to protect yourself from negativity right now - that perhaps this intolerance you feel is from a place of wanting to keep yourself in a loving, safe, and peaceful place. Honor your vulnerability and that you need strong boundaries right now, and that's okay. You can remind yourself to be compassionate to those people, to have pity on them for their ignorance or cruel behavior and the isolation and darkness it causes them. And you can also have compassion for yourself, because it makes perfect sense that these negative energies feel, well, negative, and that you don't want to be around them! Just don't let this negativity tempt you into thinking you're somehow bad for feeling that aversion. Notice it, be aware, and use it to bring yourself to a better state, but you don't need to judge yourself (that's hell talking). As for the depression and anxiety you are experiencing, and this desire for the struggles to end, I think that's so normal, and it sounds to me like a spiritual struggle within you. Often we feel a darkness right before we reach a new peaceful place and hard earned wisdom. I have also noticed how in my own life, some of my most spiritually rich times have also been some of my darkest, for example after having a new baby, I have felt the need to protect and isolate myself from other peoples' negativity, but have also experienced depression, anxiety, and even the grief for my loss of freedom, etc. It felt like I was the best person I'd ever been AND the worst person I'd ever been, and I think this is because when we have angels and spiritual truth supporting us, loving us, as they are for you during this difficult time and in the wake of your loss, we also have hell working hard to counteract that heavenly joy. You have acquired so much wisdom and hope recently and I think because of that hell is really working hard to ruin that for you! Have you seen our episode on regeneration? This is Swedenborg's take on spiritual rebirth - essentially a spiritual struggle that requires a great deal of hard work, but brings us to a place of peace and radical love, just like the hard work of pregnancy brings a new life. It sounds like what you are going through! I hope it resonates, let me know. I have worked so hard to reduce this through prayer and meditation and self-discipline - This channel helps so much - But even so - the anger reappears, seemingly out of nowhere, I can't shake it without a lot of work. So sad to realize what a short fuse I have. At least I'm getting better at recognizing SOONER after the explosion that somehow hell is involved. (And a therapist recently suggested to me that maybe there's something I'm angry at MYSELF about, and that's why it's so near the surface.... I don't know, but I'm thinking about it!) I guess there's no real trick to make it easy -- just keep putting in the work, one day (or one explosion) at a time, sending that kind of rage back to its source and asking the Lord and the angels to help replace it with something more positive. I lived on New Cumberland Air Force Base area in Harrisburg, PA where my sister was born in 1961 before we moved to Ankara, Turkey to live until 1964 and then returned to the US and went to the World's Fair in New York before returning to Oklahoma where I now live. Mom was from OKC and Dad was stationed at Tinker Field AFB in Midwest City where I now live. That's a short of my life happenings. I was born in Wiesbaden, Germany and only lived there 2 or 3 years before living all over the states as a kid. Alright I am enjoying all your videos now. I think my true 'spiritual community' is now here on your site, since there are no Spiritualist churches in the Bible Belt. So, your mom has those blue eyes too, huh, Curtis? A good question, indeed! In heaven, angels are connected through a mutual love for one another. There is a profound sense of community and fellowship there, beyond what our minds can fully comprehend! Family bonds that are truly founded in mutual love would certainly carry the possibility of visitations in the afterlife, if the Lord saw that as something useful to those angels...after all, anything is possible with the Lord. @Rebecca Rowles It's a great question, Rebecca, and I think an important thing to realize is that while we're living on earth, these preferences we see in one another (likes and dislikes), even if it's preferences about spiritual topics and pursuits, are mostly on an earthly level of the mind and spirit. The inner "loves" that deeply connect and bind are on the level of much deeper overall goals and purpose. Earthly leanings and preferences will be of little consequence when we shed them and awaken to the deeper levels of ourselves. You might compare it to looking back at what things you liked and disliked when you were 5, or 14, and then see how different you are now! :) But I think the differences will be much more profound than that. What a great question, Maria! Swedenborg observed that at any given time, we have a variety of motivations that feed our actions. And these are often a mix of good and bad! I think the real litmus test is consciously searching yourself for selfish behaviors, identifying/acknowledging them, and then working with the Lord to abstain from them. Swedenborg calls this the process of regeneration: it begins with repentance, then moves to reformation (letting spiritual concepts redefine your heart/mind). Hi Edith! Great question! The idea of choosing one's own family isn't something Swedenborg mentioned. What he does tell us is that our family doesn't have to represent us or define us. Some of us struggle a great deal with families that didn't care for us like we deserved, and we are not bound to these people forever. In fact, in heaven, we go and live with the people who we most resonate with - and they may or may not be related to us. They're really our truest kindred spirits! we share a flesh body here which is a kind of spirit and so we can interact with all kinds due to sharing a nature of flesh. the second largest comet which is almost dwarf planet sized is coming within saturns orbit in 2031, it must be some kind of symbol for new influx. this comet only comes every 4 million years scientist think. the possibly largest comet was discovered around the time period of enlightenment in 1729. whatever is going to happen, this new comet coming is a representation of something major, I think.
