This video demonstrates how to inspect inner forks tubes to see if they are bent. You should do this with every fork service and is often overlooked when there is no complaint from the customer as was the case here.

Awesome Shane, what I'd like to point out when i was in tech school the instructor would call a student out if he caught a student literally sticking a magnetic base dial indicator on a metal work bench and a part that needs to be inspected with V-blocks. He'll vigorously shake the differential as an example if he doesn't see the student put the indicator attached to the differential, majority time students stick it on the work bench and differential is on those 2 fork arms to hold it to inspections and literally he'll say what is it your doing and you're doing it all wrong because its allowing play in your inspections if its not fully mounted to where it needs to be if that makes sense. Its like for ex : 4:24, if i didn't have that tool, i'd make my own big steel sheet and attach bolts to it, must make sure of flexing of the sheet is not possible and attach this sheet above with block or something, doesn't matter if it moves but as long as the whole sheet has holes where bolts and nuts can go through to attach v blocks to make sure of any play and the magnetic base I'd probably make a square trap box to allow it not to move. I don't know whether it makes any difference but i feel like it would. Your way of doing it is fine too. just as long as the v blocks don't move thats great. Keep up the great work Shane.

When you mentioned not knowing what`s been done to it that hit home. Got a deal on a `90 Springer and I`m finding previous abuse. Butchers can really screw things up. Motorcycles and airplanes require a better skill level than shade tree mechanics have.

Does the Harley spec mean if the dial indicator moves more than .008” then it’s no good? Or does it mean the dial indicator can move up to .016”? Just wondering if the 1/2 thing it says in Hondas manual applies to the Harley one

Use v blocks to give rotation clearance for the brake/axle mount or simply hang the part of the inverted tube off the bench and do a quick check for a bent tube.

I have a Yam125scooter that was in a wreck. The tubes do not look bent. I have to measure still. But I can not tell if the marks at the tops of the both tubes are kinks or triple tree clamp marks.

Hi friend. Running down today’s list of comments! I try to answer when I've seen it before, but I don't recognize this one. I’m the Social Media Manager here. That’s a good question for Shane. He gets hundreds of requests a day and starts each day answering MEMBER or donation support questions first and then if there is time he will try to circle back before heading to the shop for customer work. As you can see from the slow response, it takes us forever to screen all these requests. 300-400 a week just in emails and 1000’s of comments! FYI members get answered daily first! Best $1.99 you’ll spend! 😁 That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily! One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. Why does it matter if the forks are bent so little? Can't you just drive with them anyways?
@How2Wrench
@How2Wrench 3 жыл бұрын
The reason is the inner and outer tubes will not follow a bend as they move up and down. The seal will be forced to flex and leak. Also metal is weakened when bent and is a risk I wouldn't want to take on two wheels... Awesome and thanks for commenting! Can you smash that subscribe button and share our channel please?
