Thanks for the video. Good advice. I'm trying to run down a problem with my son's KTM 200exc. Hard to start runs until it gets hot and then will restart after it cools a bit. (History) had a overheating problem prior caused by water pump. Thought maybe overheating caused a problem with ignition.?

Is it possible to have good strong spark, but timing in incorrect? How would you test the spark timing?

Jason Wierenga The only way the timing can change on late model KTMs is if the flywheel key shears.

I did this, and my bike gives a good spark. But when i put the other plug into the cylinder, the spark appears only wirh the kick. Not with estart. Bike husaberg te300 2013. I hawe a new trailtech stator, 410w starter, new coil, 16’ bendix and crown gear, wet mode and aftermarket bushings. It just doesnt want to start with estart, only the kick. Starter spins fast, but doesnt fire up the engine. Earlier it could start with tapping the kill switch. Now this doesnt work. What else can i do?

My '08 ktm 250 sxf wont spark. I've disconnected the Kill sw, With this bike does it need to be connected to get spark? My tests on my ignition coil are within spec with my manual. Same as my stator and pulser coil. When I use a peak voltage adapter on my coil trigger wire with it disconnected from the coil and where i'm testing the CDI side i'm seeing quite a bit of volts around 80 if I remember right and then they slow down to 0. When I have the trigger wire connected to my coil and then run the test i'm not seeing anything on my multimeter. Could it be the coil? I've replaced the CDI with a new KTM CDI. I also tried one of those AMR coils and still nothing. I connected a test light to the wire that would go to my kill sw and it lights up when I kick it over. I've tested continuity on my wire harness and even bought a new wire harness and am seeing same results. I decided to try my spark tester instead of using new plugs. I've tried two brand new plugs with same result and purchased a new plug boot. Tested without boot. All the tests seems to be within spec but i'm still not seeing spark. Sanded my chassis grounds and the grounds on the coil. I'm at a loss now.

When I do your test I get no spark, but bike will start off a bump sometimes??

Mr Slavens, I writing to try and get some help. I'm just not sure where to go from here. As I said in previous post, Our 200exc is having problems. Has a compression reading of around 280psi. Did your spark check with the electrode cut off. Good spark. But it is hard to start and then will stop running when it's hot. It will only restart after its cooled down a bit. Any help please.

So my spark plug sparks when I'm just holding it up in the air... pretty strong spark too. Then when I hold it against ground....it just sparks intermittently. Any ideas? Its a 50cc 2 stroke.

So was just wondering if I could bend the ground electrode out very far to create a wide Gap instead of cutting it off and wasting a plug do you think it would still be a valid test by bending the electrode as far as you can go up cuz it seems to me that you can get the same distance into the gap without breaking it off I would presume and I'm sure by the time you go all the way up and bend it back down it's going to be weaker but maybe I'll go and see if it can be done without it actually breaking or maybe just using old plug if he got one then sacrifice it......

I would not bend the ground electrode way out then back in because it could create a costly failure. Use an old plug or buy a lawn mower plug at Walmart for $2.

I have an 08 ktm 300 xc. Just replaced the ignition coil and spark plug cap yet no spark. A.) I tested the wires from the stator and have continuity. Could it still be my stator? B.) do you guys have a stator that will fit my bike? And if so when I remove the cover, is it directly behind it or will I need to remove the fly wheel? And I would like to get all new wiring for my bike just in case. Any recommendations of where I could order it.

Yes, we have stators in stock (listed on our site) and it is mounted to the inside of the ign. cover. TOTAL waste of money to replace the entire harness.

Hello: As explained in the video, remove the ground electrode from an old spark plug (can be fouled) and do the test. Then purchase a new plug at Slavens Racing, slavensracing.com/shop/spark-plugs-ktm-husaberg-ngk/ .

You should always start with the basics. Do a compression test.

Make sure the end of the wire is attached to the spark plug, it'll make a tiny click. If the spark is still coming out the side of the wire? The insulation has failed and you'll need a new wire. Good Luck. Edit: Check the spark plug itself, my teacher, a long time mechanic, spent hundreds of dollars chasing a misfire, heads, timing, cam, etc. One of my fellow students, Jeff A., who's a natural born mechanic, found the problem in about three minutes. Cracked ceramic, leaking spark. Always check the least expensive items first.
