how to check transmission fluid level on MOST cars

Checking the transmission fluid on most cars is the same process. The car must be level and the engine must be running in order to check the fluid level. It’s best to check the level when the engine is completely hot. If the fluid is low then you want to slowly add fluid tell you have the correct level. You do not want to Overfill your transmission, it will add unnecessary pressure inside the transmission. Hope you found the video you saw

Just a tip on on a better reading a dipstick guys, do it at night with a flashlight shined on the dipstick and don't turn it all the way vertical or horizontal. Hold the dipstick at a sight angle, also remember a little low is better than overfilling so slow and steady with the bottle.

I have the same problem with my Nissan. Everything on YT is so confusing that I had go consult the manual that came with the car. I was doing it wrong! Transmission oil should be checked while the engine is on at Park mode.

On my Honda Civic is required for the car to be off to check the transmission fluid LOL But yes like your title says most cars Thanks for the info

I have heard both ways. Always check when the engine is hot. But Some cars, you check with the engine off, while others you check with the engine on. Check with your owners manual. Or better yet; call your local dealership for your car make. Ask for the service department. They'll look it up and they'll tell you. But keep in mind, if you don't yourself and you mess something up; it's on you. It's not on them. It's always very risky to be your own mechanic. I am my own mechanic, but I don't touch any of my neighbors cars. They always want me to fix their cars as well. If I mess up their car, I don't want that responsibility hanging over me. With Hondas, you warm up the vehicle, turn the engine off, then check the transmission fluid level.

I just have changed trans fluid, and it is REALLY hard to see where the level is! I am having a non stable shifting, I’ve added about 50-100 ml. It felt right, but next day when the car is cool, I felt a non stable shifting, so I added about 50-70 ml, but now I think I overfilled since the level is over the hot area (way over) but the oil is fresh and thin and hard to locate .. any suggestions on how to read accurately?!

Here's a tip I learned from watching a variety of videos on KZbin. When changing out your transmission fluid. When refilling the new transmission fluid, pour in a little at a time. Start your car, but don't drive it. Go from gear to gear. Park, reverse, drive, 1, 2. Leave it each gear for about 2, maybe 3 seconds. Repeat this process twice maybe. Go check the fluid level again, add more fluid if need be. And repeat the process from gear to gear. Special Not****I am not a mechanic, I'm not responsible for any damages to your car if this doesn't work for you. I got this information from a KZbin video. I did it on my car, and my car runs great. Quick update. The car has been running fine. The shifting has improved since the oil change, not that it was bad before but now it feels extra smooth and snappy.

I have same case on my yaris verso 1.3 vvti. Cold is over hot maximum mark. When i warm it up it shows just below hot minimum. I am not sure why that happens...?

Hi, why is my transmission oil at the full mark when I drive around town and then if I take a long 2-3 hour drive, my transmission oil is about 1/4 more above the last fill line? I don't understand that. It seams like the hotter the car runs and longer driving temperatures my transmission oil rises on the dipstick. The trans was rebuilt about a year ago. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank u

The volume of the oil increases when it gets hot. This is normal behavior. Thats why most dipsticks have 2 different levels: hot and cold to determine the correct amount of Fluid.

It’s usually red, but sometimes companies purposely don’t put it in so you have to go and get it switched in a auto shop or replace your transmission

Always read the level at the lowest point. If one side is high and one is lower, go by the side that is the lowest.
