I remember as a child, i had a friend from Taiwan. He was crying at the flee market because his parents cooked him Taiwanese bento lunch. He exclaimed as he was sobbing, "You don't understand. The other kids will make fun of me. I don't want this." I remember even being 5 or 6 at the time thinking that's a fucked up world we live in. 29 now.

This is right up my alley. I can't wait to try this! Doenjjang jiggae is one of my favourite stews/ soups. I wish I saw this on Saturday when I went to the Korean grocery store. Yum! People calling the cops on others for the smell of their food is so shitty and racist. Especially in North Carolina, because god knows southerners DEFINITELY make plenty of food with strong smells. I think every culture has some dish that is very strong smelling but comforting and tasty. My grandma used to make a stewed cabbage dish that made the whole house stink. But there was nothing better on a cold day or when I was feeling under the weather! I still make it now when I need a pick me up.
@ciganyweaverandherperiwink62932 жыл бұрын
I would love that cabbage dish recipe. I'm always searching for more ideas for really nutritious meals to cook when feeling under the weather mid-winter here in England are always. I can handle my home reeking of a giant parp if the payoff is something delicious and healthy. 😆

Hello, Katie and Daniel! I recently ordered this at a local Korean restaurant in Manila just so I can have a point of reference as to how it should taste. I instantly knew that they're cooking it because of-you're right-the pungent smell. Quite distinct smell that piqued the interest of the some of the servers. I finished it with the help of one bowl of rice.

They thought you were cooking your cat?? This reminds me of a news in Singapore where a lady complained to the town council (organisation that manages a residential zone) about her neighbours cooking curry.... Food smells are inevitable if we live in apartments that are close to each other, we just need to be tolerant of it.

I think it’s a white person thing because it happened to us in the UK. My family restaurant served Chinese food and this woman had never seen char siu (bbq roast pork) before and was convinced it was cat and dog meat. Apparently the red colouring was their blood!
