I'm going to look at my work again but, after putting it all back together, it isn't lining up with the van like it did previously. There's too much space between the housing and the van body and the housing sticks out slightly so that I can see the protrusion from my driver's side rear view mirror. Could it be that I didn't put the clips in (I didn't even notice to do that)? What else could it possibly be?

I would imagine that it is the grommets or alignment pins off slightly?

@@nodakviking I fixed it. It was the alignment pins and the base they fit into which was askew. Done.

My husband replaced our 2008 Chevy van tail light and can’t get the top nut to grip back in. Any ideas on why?

I would assume that either the nut (the part that is removed) or the bolt (the stud attached to the vehicle itself) is stripped. You could try to go a size down or rethread it.
