Car amplifiers do a lot more than just make your music play loud - they make all music sound better. But with so many to choose from, which one is right for your car?

9:20 Outro
A lot of people think of loudness when they think of amplifiers, but that's just one benefit. An amplifier will make your music sound cleaner and more defined even at lower volumes.
Amplifiers can really bring the best qualities of aftermarket speakers forward. Aftermarket speakers, unlike factory speakers, are designed to handle more power, play cleaner, and reveal more detail than factory speakers, which are designed mainly to a certain (low) price point.
Subwoofers need an amp to move enough air to play the low frequencies. Some subs have the amp built in, called powered subwoofers, while your component subs use a separate amplifier.
So which type do you need? 2-channel? 4-channel? 5 or 6 channel? More channels? How much power? Are there certain features you want or need? Our expert walks you through it in this video.

Thanks. That was great. I appreciated that your power recommendation for amps was conservative as many people think they need 1000W amps. Also, amps should be at or below the speaker ratings. So many people think that you need amps rated higher than the continuous RMS rating of the speakers.
@Xx_xxx_xX185
@Xx_xxx_xX185 2 жыл бұрын
Thats not true you actually want to have more rms power from the amp than the speakers because then you dont need to push the amp that hard to get the power needed but if you have amp with lower rms power you are more likely to push it too hard and break your amp or speakers
@josequilez5449
@josequilez5449 2 жыл бұрын
Nick your gonna blow amps by overworking them to push your speakers. These guys sell audio equipment. That's why they give the limited explanation they do. So you can buy more from them with the feeling that it's spent well instead of actually teaching you the truth.

choose based on your financial capability. other than that, look at your car specifications like electrical system power (you might want to add additional battery and after that can consider power capacitors), so your audio system doesn't short your car electrical capacity even at max volume. you also better use 3x more powerful amp than your speaker RMS because most amplifier will start to produce more than 1% THD after more than 1/3 of total amp power. this is to ensure you can maintain your low distortion listening experience and not to be worried about harsher sound and even clipping your amplifier, as long as you set the small volume knob at 1/3. keep calibrate the amp according to the head unit spec so you can be sure it doesn't go more than the power threshold you've set. if the overall volume is too low, you can always compromise your sq for bigger sound but at higher THD anytime. but make sure the speaker RMS is matching if not more so to be on the safe side.

Question: I recently picked up a SD 1200.4 thinking it was a 4 ohm version but found out it was the 2 ohm version. this DRASTICALLY changes the power per channel at each ohm variance. the speakers I want to push are 100 RMS but 250 PEAK. I can do 138 per channel running them each on their own channel (running 4 speakers all the same make/model)... one place tells me to run bridged and parallel. but if they exchange my amp for the 4 ohm version I would have 198 per channel at 4 ohm. I get others saying the current amp wont be enough, and yet others saying the current one will be to much in the video it talks about speakers having "Max RMS" and I get the 75-100% thing. but with the RMS having one rating and then my "peak" being a very different number... which rating do I use? and what wiring method would be best. I can exchange straight across for the other amp. should I get the other amp or stay with what I have and wire it in a specific way?

If you can change to a ported subwoofer box setup, that will help. Also, find one that presents a 2 ohm load to that amp to get all the power it can give for a subwoofer. The clarity of the other speakers may be able to be increased depending on what was used to help get the audio from the stock system to the new amp. I recommend contacting an advisor to discuss these specifics and ideal changes to get a personal recommendation on gear to help with your goals. Hi Crutchfield. A few questions for you: 1) I currently have one X-12 V.2 D4 - Sundown Audio 12" 1500W RMS DVC 4-Ohm X V.2 Series Subwoofer in a custom ported enclosure tuned to 32 Hz. What monoblock amplifier do I need to provide sufficient quality power? 2) I eventually plan on adding a second Sundown Audio subwoofer for a total of two subwoofers, but that won't be for about 7-8 months from now. What monoblock amp do you recommend to power the 2 subwoofers previously mentioned?

Based on those specifications, we only offer one amp that can power two: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/p_57525001CP/item.html The single sub setup can be powered with an amp that gives it 70% of the top RMS power. That's the minimum we recommend for good performance. This means 1075 watts RMS is the minimum making this amp able to sufficiently power one sub: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYTVc227/p_301HCP1DK/item.html

Great video, really helpful. I'm planning a car audio build and I'm looking at an Alpine 5 channel amp to power four 40 watt 4ohm speakers and two 200watt 2ohm DVC subwoofers. The amp has 4 channels with 40watts at 4 ohms and 1 channel with 300watts at 2ohms. If I run the subs in parallel/serial the impedance will match the amp's 2ohms but the amp would only be supplying 75% of the subs required 400 watts. I was told by a local shop that underpowering the subs like this will damage the subs and overheat the amp. However, in this video, you said, "you should strive to be within 75% to 100% of the subwoofer power". Do you think this setup would be OK? I realise what I'm looking at would be at the lower limit but I'm not looking for a loud system, just better quality. Thanks in advance.
@crutchfield
@crutchfield 3 жыл бұрын
this would work just fine! The problems can arise if you A) turn your gains up ( Gain is not a volume knob) and B) run your amp at full blast for a long time. this can stress out the amp over time. Now, 75% of the RMS power should be ok for your subs, any lower and you could risk there being a loss of control of the cones which can lead to flexing, distortion, and stress on both the cones and the coils.

Hey JR, I want to do a component set in the front, two-ways in the rear door, and a sub. I only have 3 preamp outputs in my radio. If I'm running front, mids, and sub with the preamps outputs, how do I hook up the tweeters with an amp? How many channels would I need?
@crutchfield
@crutchfield 3 жыл бұрын
If you go with a component set for the front, the separate woofer and tweeter are actually both part of the same front channel. You would be all set if you have 3 preamp outputs.

Great video. I have a little different sce ario where my speakers are 2 ohm 75Wrms and the Head Unit is 25W per channel at 4 ohm. Is this putting at risk my head unit? If that is the case can I use a 4 ohm 600 amp to cover the need for power?? Thank you so much for your time!
@crutchfield
@crutchfield Жыл бұрын
Most head units are not able to support 2 ohm speakers. If the head unit can support 2 ohms, the owner's manual will list it. If your head unit is one that cannot support 2 ohms, that is likely to put the head unit at risk. We need to check the amp's watts RMS per channel at 2 ohms. The amp should output no more than 75 watts RMS at 2 ohms. If it does not exceed the 75 watts RMS at 2 ohms, then it will work with the speakers

Hi! I replaced the all stock Boston speakers in my 2011 Chrysler 200s Convertible for kicker CS series speakers, because the previous owner abused the stock system and it sounded like it was on its last leg. And now, they play quite a bit lower on volume, I assume because they are 4ohm vs 2ohm, and the door speakers play only bass, as in the tweeters and mid-range aren't active at all, because the stock system used the door speakers as subs pretty much. And my question is, how do I choose an amp for these speakers? Because most of the amps are for example x4 channels at 90watts, while in my car the dash speakers are 35w RMS, the door speakers are 150w RMS, and the rear seat speakers are 100w rms, and I have no idea what amp to choose with this setup. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there. I have a 2 way ground zero uranium kit that says it's 130wrms for each side and 210wrms maximum for each side. Do you think a CTX 1000.4 RE audio amplifier will be enough? This amplifier on the manufacturer's website says to deliver 100wrms x 4 - 4ohms 14.4v but in the manual of the amp itself, it declares 80wrms x 4 - 4ohms 14.4v. We are not familiar with those speakers, but we do know that typically when a speaker lists a watts RMS range, the first number if the minimum amount of power they should get to give the sound they have been designed to produce and the second number is the one that should not be exceeded. Hi there! We recommend pairing the amplifier wattage output to about 70-100% of the speaker/sub RMS power handling. Some amps, when bridged, can satisfy the speakers as well as the sub, but if you have a sub that needs more power, then a separate mono amp may be in order.

An amp that is matched to the speakers never hurts the sound! But at this time, it is unknown if an amp is needed or should be installed to meet your goals. Infinity Reference speakers are super efficient and can give a lot of sound when being powered by a radio. For some, that is enough. You could try that first and then add an amp if you want more. As for adding a tweeter, that is not needed. Those speakers come with a tweeter built in. If the speaker will be installed into a lower location in the pickup, then you might consider changing to the REF-6530CX speakers as those will keep the sound balanced while also providing a separate tweeter that can be mounted higher in the pickup and help with the overall clarity of the audio. These speakers can be found here: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc227/p_108R6530CM/item.html

For most vehicle setups, you can go with a 5-channel amp that provides 4 channels for the speakers and a 5th channel for the sub. You also have the option of using a separate 4-channel amp and a mono amp for the sub. That may change depending on the number of speakers you need to power, but this is typical for many setups. Sometimes the choice comes down to personal preference and price, and sometimes the wattage match is easier with one or the other. We can help narrow the options! What is the year on that HHR? What JL Audio speakers are you using, and do you have any information on that subwoofer?

You are on the right track in knowing that you should make sure the amp can output the total RMS watts handled by all the subs when added together. I would suggest 1* 400w sub. This sub will be able to handle a lot more than those 2* 200w. If you come across a more powerful amp, good quality subs will be able to handle even the double the power or higher. 200w subwoofer tens to bottom out much quicker than 400w.

Take the watts rms and the resitance of the subs voice coil if dvc it can be wired double and half total resistance of a single voice coil, find an amp with the matching rms power at specified resistance, try match peak of sub to peak power of amp to not overly mismatch, (rms is the importantbpower here though) and low thd and high s/n (snr) because s/n is signal to noise ratio a!d thd is totao harmonic distortion, then wire them propperly :) make sure the amp physically fits where you want to install it
