I'm currently looking between the MK3i and the Shearwater watch-style air integrated computers. I'd be very interested in any thoughts. The thing I'm most on the fence about is that I would like to get something that also functions as a daily watch.
@CircleHScuba6 ай бұрын
The Mk3i is very large imo for an every day watch. If that’s a core concern, definitely look at both in store. The Teric and Tern TX are similar in size and feel much more “normal” on my arm. The Garmin watches also do WAY more because they’re a smart sport watch first, diving being one small piece of all the things they do. This may be good or bad depending on your thoughts on that. People criticize the Apple Watch Ultra as a dive computer because it’s one small piece of an otherwise normal smart watch, where something Shearwater or other brands that focus 100% on being a dive computer may function better. My recommendation is to try them on in store for sure if you worry about every day use though! If you don’t need tec diving stuff beyond more basic tec rec, the Tern TX is awesome. If you need those few extra modes, the Teric.

I got a Mk3i with the T2 transmitter at the end of December and I've now 62 dives on it and to me, there is a lot to love. I can't imagine not having it or dealing with two watches... one as a dive computer for diving only and one as a sports watch for everything else. My Garmin has it all and does it very well.

I LOVE IT. I don't regret paying a kidney for it. But when I got a scratch on the bezel after my 50 something dives on it... I am still quite annoyed lol

Great video as always. You hit the nail on its head in this video. I havr been going with an entry level wrist computer it had everything I needed as a recreational diver air/nitrox dive logging , didn't need the extra frills like app etc . UNTIL i went night diving first time using it , it wasn't a pleasant experience had to fiddle to find the light button and use my torch. So in the next upgrade when I can afford it , I will be definitely looking for a computer with good colour visibility as first priority!
@CircleHScuba6 ай бұрын
That’s exactly what my girlfriend experienced in her first night dive. Dang! Well, sincerely the Tern and Tern TX are legitimately my number 1 recommendation to divers now. The TX especially, so you have AI (air integration) as an option, even if you buy the transmitter later. Thanks for comment and compliment on the video!

I have a Tern TX & had a little mishap with a band within 1st dive trip use & customer service was VERY attentive and helpful. They even stuck around to chat with me on any other questions I had beyond my issue. They sent a replacement band without delay or charge and it wasn’t officially a problem on their end. I can’t say enough great things about the customer service!!
@CircleHScuba4 ай бұрын
That’s such a great testimony! May I ask what happened with the band? I haven’t had any issues yet but always love to hear what may have happened if you want to share
@punkw78524 ай бұрын
@@CircleHScuba it wasn’t necessarily the band. More of the pin that held the saddle clasp thing. I don’t know what it’s officially called. 🤔 I don’t know if it popped off in the water my first dive, or if the nut end just wasn’t installed when the band was shipped to me, or something else. I was checking my depth, etc when we were between dives & noticed the pin was backing out. The dive master (Sweet Bottom Dive Shop, in Frederiksted, St Croix) found a replacement. I’m pretty sure he disassembled his to help me out. Great customer service!! I was able to enjoy the rest of my dives without fear of losing it. After getting home I called to see about buying a pin & possibly a tiny tool in case it happened again. They immediately sent me new replacement bands. They had GREAT customer service and were surprised at the issue I had. Michelle at DIVE-Tronix, LLC was very helpful!!

Great content. In hindsight, I wish I had done more research before getting my first computer - I found an inexpensive one and thought, this’ll do great. Well, it was near impossible to read underwater for me, I can’t imagine trying to read it in low light or night situations. Bought a Shearwater Perdix AI after a LOT of research, and my biggest criteria was color and readability. It has never let me down, easy to read every time, and packed with features that I can expand into later as I keep progressing. Dive computers are definitely an area where I strongly recommend doing a lot of research, spending time figuring out what is needed and wanted, and what can be afforded - versus just going out and buying one because it’s inexpensive. …… that all said, I do still have the inexpensive one, its my backup.
@CircleHScuba6 ай бұрын
Yes to all of this! This is definitely the pain point I’m trying to address in the video. A little research goes a long way, and in the case of $200 versus $2000+, it’s a huge impact!

Like it or not , Shearwater and Garmin are just crushing in those days. I don't like to wear a watch daily, so i got a Teric. But Garmin is definitely stepping up on Shearwater nerves 😂 ----- Mistake i made back in the days is buying a budget computer, I outgrown it pretty fast, and this stuff has 0 resale value. If you account for that loss , top-notch computer is cheaper to buy from beginning.
@CircleHScuba6 ай бұрын
Resale is a good point. I don’t like selling gear, which is a problem of its own haha, but also resale to buy new gear is a thing to consider!

@CircleHScuba yeah. I got my first DC for 1100$ (CAD) w transmitter, and i couldn't sell it for 40% of its price. So i keep it as spare, but i highly doubt that i need a spare while using Teric. If i would buy Teric from the start, i had saved 1100$ 😅

I don't do deep decompression dives anymore. So, a simple dive computer works for me. Required features for me are: supports decompression stops (emergency), multiple nitroix mixes on a dive, user replaceable battery, clear readable screen, wrist mount. Things I would like: Bluetooth, and Air integration. Most all of the new lower end computers have my required feathers and many have bluetooth. As much as I would like to have Air Integration it's just more than I a willing to spend. In my opinion, if you can afford it, air integration is a got to have feature! The added features are great, like time remaining of gas and more!!!

The Tern (non TX) may fit the budget then! No user changeable battery but the battery life is so much better than some others out there. Good list of must haves though!

Few years ago I got my first dive computer Shaerwater Perdix AI - it is a great computer, but it has a few problems - too many divers have it, so making it is important, second problem - it is just perfect, so there is no need upgrading it to perdix 2 or any other computer.

A watch tells time and maybe has other clock related functions like a stopwatch/timer/alarm. This is a computer, calculating depth, no decompression limit, etc. telling time is one small component

I guess you put the wrong title to the video. it should have been ' why should you buy a Shearwater dive computer'. This is more a promotional than an instructional video. Nothing wrong with giving attention to the sponsor, but when it contains more than 60% of the video......
@CircleHScuba6 ай бұрын
For some context, I think around the 9 minute mark I mention a specific computer for the first time. There’s a lot of information here with just a little about the computer I recommend to new divers and ones looking to upgrade. I went to Shearwater to say my audience uses Shearwater (based on other video comments) and would benefit from this kind of video. I also have used a Perdix AI since I got my OW certification and now have two Perdix 2’s also, all bought with my own money. I don’t endorse things I don’t actually use, recommend, etc. Totally respect that you see “ad” and think that’s all it is, but I think the ~20 min video it’s full of features of all computers, use cases, types, etc. with a recommendation in a small segment is still a good educational video.

I think the title is correct. How do you choose a dive computer? - simple : you get shearwater 😎
