The Viridian Hue is pthalo green and is non granulating, but you can make a viridian hue that is closer to a true granulating viridian by mixing ultramarine which is granulating (3 to one, 3 parts viridian hue with one part ultramarine blue) this mix is much closer to a true viridian. Holbein’s true Viridian is quite nice. Multi pigment mixes make absolutely no difference at all, there are far to many people who make an issue about something that is a non-issue, and has never been an issue. I have been a professional artist for more than 30 years (both traditional and illustration), you just need to learn to mix your colors and know what the results will be, color charts are great for beginners but color studies are much more useful all around.

Yeah you're right about the single pigment issue. I understand someone who's obsessed with the single pigment idea. It's a ideal romance someone is cling to. But never judge the performance of a color by just looking at the pigment tags. Say no-no to a color by just swatching it and pointing out its multiple pigmented formulation is not so convincing and properly done for me.

I think Holbein paint doesn't granulate as much because they're made with illustrators in mind who like flat washes

Hi Nicolle. Holbein Ultramarine Deep PB29 and Cerulean Blue PB35 are extremely granulating. Many are very flat, though.

Agreed. One of the reasons I like Holbein so much is that the colors are vibrant and I am not a big fan of granulating colors. Looking at my chart of 65 Holbein colors-- Ultramarine Deep, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Red Purple, Scarlet Lake, Quin Opera, and Cerulean Blue are the only ones that look noticeably granulating. Oh, and Gold and Silver, but those are more like suspensions than actual color pigments. lol

Yay!!! Thank you Teoh! I love Holbein and they are my favorite paint. My split primaries are all single pigment colors, PY154, PY110, PR254, PV19, PB15:3 and PB29. They are so easy to use and the colors really pop off the page. I know they are not everyone's favorite, but I really connected on a personal level with the colors. I'm willing to bet you know what I'm talking about :) Once again, thanks for the review!

I just recently upgraded my Koi watercolors to Holbein. I love them haha, although I have to agree that their Vermillion is not as "red" as I expected.. but overall, I enjoy painting using Holbein WC. And I'd say, for a professional grade watercolor, their prices aren't that crazy high, so that's a plus 👍

I have several Holbein colors in my palette, non of them included in this set except Prussian Blue, which is a favorite of mine, since most of my painting is done in sketchbooks so light fastness isn't a concern for me. The other colors I use made by Holbein are Verditer Blue (I use instead of Cerulean blue), Scarlet Lake (nice rich orange leaning red), and Cadmium Yellow (one of the few true Cadmium colors available these days).

Yeah, I bought 18 color set and disappointed with too many 3 pigment colors, even though they are pretty. Later I bought 1 pigment colors and I like them. PB60, PY110, PR122 and cobalt colors. It seems their 3 pigment color ranges are in line with designer's gouache in Winsor & Newton for illustrators.

HOLBEIN is very affordable in Asia. My complaint is some tubes are somewhat much less pigmented than brands like DS. In the pan it shrinks a lot. But since it's also cheaper than DS I feel it acceptable. The other thing is that the lightfast rating could be confusing.They accurately tag Prussian blue as moderately lightfast yet tag PR83 excellent. And the color selections of the sets they offer are somewhat odd to me. HOLBEIN is very good for realistic paintings, though the tinting strength is not so striking like other artist brands, it layers perfectly. Their cadmium colors are excellent both in performance and price as long as you buy it in Asia. Another good thing is that they offer 60ml tubes with very reliable pigment. Very economically friendly for those who run studios or workshops.

Greetings Teoh. I have a few questions for you. First, what brand of paper are you using for your color charts? What size are your squares? And what size paper do you use for the larger color charts (12 or more colors)? Do you cut the larger charts from a single sheet of paper? I really enjoy your reviews and videos. Thank you.

@KimberlyCrick
@KimberlyCrick 5 жыл бұрын
In the meantime, if it helps, I have both and the Coliro/Finetec are MUCH shinier. Actually there are very few competitors to Coliro's Arabic Gold in the most reflective of mica shimmers. Daniel Smith's do not rewet the same way either, so it's a bit hard to get solid shimmer once you put from tube to pan. Kremer and Van Gogh both make metallics closer to Coliro.
@chrom0xide123
@chrom0xide123 5 жыл бұрын
I think the pigments in daniel smith are smaller. Talens van Gogh has also a new box for interference and metallics, and there is also a koi watercolor metallics box.

Hi I'm about to buy some Holbein tubes but found difficulty in the package design. As I searched for Holbein watercolor tube, the result came in two different types of tube. One is the same white tube with the color label stripe on the top as yours and the other is a metal one with the color label stripe parallel with the tube. Do you have any idea about that because I'm sooo confused ToT

In the context of watercolour painting, the word "permanent" has a long tradition. Unlike in normal usage, the word normally means cheap pigments which are likely to fade. On the up side, you only have 5ml of the stuff so thats not going to last long anyway. 5ml! Thats a stupid small quantity. Thankfully there are better options out there. Nice vid though, thanks.
@teohyc

5ml is for people to sample the colours. The alternative is buying 15ml of a colour to discover you don't like it.

did you use gouache often before? and did you let it dry or did you use it from the tube? Personally I think gouache in general should only be used from a tube to get the best experience. If you want to dry them in pans, you're better off just getting watercolors with black and white gouache or even further less transparent watercolors.

@@soseki2807 from the tube, with my main color piles on some wet paper towel, and with a spray bottle for rewetting. Every time I've tried the Holbein gouache I feel like I'm fighting a war of attrition against the medium itself. Maybe I'm just too used to the texture of oil and acrylic paints

@@nauci I watched Mind of Watercolor and he rated them pretty highly, but I do know alot of their colors have alot of pigment mixes.
