Let me clarify something: there's no actual polarity in these pedals. They just open or close the circuit, so the switch is to select "normal open" (N.O.) or "normal closed" (N.C.). Nothing is positive or negative here. You just switch between having both terminals open or closed by default (unpressed). Update: however, everywhere this is indeed called polarity switch, as it refers to two opposite behaviors. Apparently, this usage is acceptable though.

Thanks for the demo. FYI for anyone thinking if m-audio EX-P expression pedal or even any sustain pedal with trs jack will work on novation launchkey series, it does not. I have tried it and it doesn't work..neither do any pedals that have a TRS jack. Novation support mentioned the launchkey works with a regular non TRS jack input. Hope this helps someone . Cheers.
@Autotrope
@Autotrope 2 жыл бұрын
TRS jack may indicate it's an "expression pedal" which is a continuous linear value rather than a simple on and off. It acts as a voltage divider. It's not compatible with something expecting a simple on/off, UNLESS the pedal has a switch allowing you to switch it to a simple on/off action instead or it is otherwise designed to be compatible as an on/off switch. A controller with a socket labeled "expression pedal" should be able to cope with either but if the socket is labeled "sustain" or "damper" or says it's a switch it will only cope with the on/off switch.

Yes, the pedals will work for any type of keyboards, as long the keyboard has a sustain pedal jack. A sustain pedal's circuitry is quite simple actually.

Many controllers and keyboards now will auto-detect polarity by sampling the pedal state when the keyboard is turned on and assuming that to be the "off" state. Tip: if you plug in a pedal and it turns out to be the wrong polarity, you can try turning the keyboard / controller off and on to see if it picks up the correct polarity. In other controllers/keyboards this may be a setting that is controlled either on the device or in software. Check the manual for your device as it should be described in there. That said, buying a pedal that is switchable will remove any concern about being able to use it on any device including controllers or keyboards that do not include such a setting or autodetection.
@markalbrecht6989
@markalbrecht6989 Жыл бұрын
Correct. The Casio CT-S500 doesn't seem to have either the ability to change the setting in the software, or to autosense the pedal polarity. So we seem to be stuck buying another pedal instead of being able to use it on two different keyboards.

Very good and helpful information. But it kinda sounds like you downgraded a Casio product. Now I use a homemade sustain pedal (made with wood, metal, cable jack and a bit of God's love😌). This basically has no polarity switch and very little weight. But what I do is that for the polarity, I press down the pedal before plugging it in. And also for the weight I either taped the end of the wire close to the pedal to the ground, or I put something quite heavy on the wire. Once again this is no criticism but a humble opinion.
