Great review on these washers. I have the same exact Maytag model that you review. The bleach dispenser was rusting. I just painted it yesterday with appliance expoxy paint. I can tell you that the machine is made of thin metal. I found this out while doing the repair. The machine is four and one half years old and it's not abused. We don't overuse bleach. I researched that these never do rust first at the bleach dispenser.
@HarperandKnowles

I always advise my customers to put the bleach directly into the tub with water. That is a weak spot on modern machines. Gone are the days that manufacturers used porcelain coated machine tops.

You did a great job with this review! The “add a garment” is really a silly feature since I don’t know of any front loader that fills with enough water to spill out of the front if you open the door. The DA agitator on the whirlpool and the Amana are better than the agitator on the Maytag, which doesn’t give you enough water movement, it’s just an extended wash plate. Just My opinion anyway.

Thanks for the good in-depth review. When you talk about years of expected use for family of four (5-7 years),how would that translate to a family of two or a single person. Could a one or two person household double the number of years (10-14 years)? I would expect a young active family would wash several loads daily compared to retire couple doing may only do a single weekly load.

I tie dye so after a hand rinse, I like to place it in a full washing machine of water so it doesn't cross dye other items. Having the ability to freely control every cycle is a must. Applying an extra spin without the spray that's intended to even out the balance of the load, I need it without the spray because I spin out a PH treatment to the fabric to make dye bond molecularity. That spray dilutes my treatment. I also pull the drain hose to catch the unused chemical so I can spin it into a bucket and reuse it. Also being able to stop after the the rinse and back up to rinse again, is good for sensitive skin issues and rinsing out excess dye before switching temperatures for second washing.. I start cold and then hot. Hot is great for getting out the the last of the dye, but if there is too much still leftover, hot can also cause an activation in the chemistry process, making dye bond places I don;t want it too. But it also makes the white parts of a tie dye shirt whiter than hand or cold washing if the dye was sufficiently washed out in cold wash. .And there is no point going through the full 5+ minute spin. Maybe just a quick wringing of about 30 seconds to a minute then Refill and rinse to get all that detergent/residual dye out. Just wish I could do it hotter in cases of detergent. Hell, dye, too. on hot wash . I need control over all of it. All of it. lol Honestly the safety switch in the washer lid was sufficient enough. I don't need to be saved from myself. Unlock the damn washer. Darwin's law will sort things out.

I'm thinking you could get yourself one of the old style Whirlpool direct drive washers and just use a test box like I showed how to make in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2eyemqbqqyHe8U. You could also wire the water valves to a bank of toggle switches to select hot or cold inlet or both when you want warm. This way you can completely bypass the timer and pressure functions and fill the tub to the level and temperature you want and select agitate or spin and drain at the times you want them to occur. TOTAL CONTROL. This wouldn't be hard to do at all! Thanks for watching!

I agree. I bought a Kenmore washer/dryer set the first year after I married. I still have the dryer. The washer died after 27 years. I figured it was because we moved three times and the machine was hurt during the last move. I replaced it with a Speed Queen AWNE92SP113. Dealer claimed the SQ would far outlast the Kenmore. Kenmore cost me $300, SP $800. SP stopped working last week after 8-9 yrs. Cost to repair (maybe, it was left open to needing more than one part) $500. SO I bought a new machine. Every still claims Speed Queens are the best. I did love mine, it was very close to my Kenmore and was quieter. The NEW Speed Queen TR7003WN cost $1500! And it arrived damaged/defective. It is Friday, I have a hole in my laundry room. Found Speed Queens are all hype. Their life is no greater than any other brand! And their horsepower means they cost more to buy AND operate. And like an luxury car, they cost more to keep going. I have to do laundry but not large loads most of the time. Because I live in a older home I thought the Speed Queens would be more dependable. I never considered those circuit boards though! I can't understand why they use better ones or put them in and price them so end users can replace them easily and cost effectively. As it is right now I am SO SO overwhelmed by all of the sales claims by the dealers who want to push the Speed Queens. I miss Sears so much right now ! They really looked out for consumers and carried merchandise and quality dependable appliances and were there to help someone make the best choice. LOWES/HOME DEPOT are terrible. And Best Buy is worse. I just don't know where or how to get a washing machine right now. Speed Queen claimed they were going to help me but they lied. It's hard to do stewardship math for appliances right now. I feel I have fleeced and foolish. I drank the kool aid and fell for the Speed Queen claims twice. And neither times did I wind up with a machine comparable to my Kenmore!

4:10 I notice these nachines with interchangeable parts have quite different agitators, that the Whirlpool has a true agitator with a dual action auger but the Maytag has a one-piece "agipeller" or as I call it a "fraudgitator" without separate action for the auger. The problem is, the one-piece moves the clothes up and down hampering the roll-over of the clothes where the true dual-action contributes to the rollover. My choice was the Speed Queen TC5. A bit more expensive, but it does th job and it will probably outlast me.

Today I just had a defective NTW4516FW4 warranty/service contract replaced. We only had the washer for 1.5 years. The washer was used at least twice daily. We were careful not to overload. For the price the washer did an excellent job cleaning the clothes. You do have to review the manual and watch videos to learn how to use it. For power protection, washer was plugged into a GFI with a surge supressor to protect the electronic components. Amana is made by Whirlpool and I find it quite disappointing that the quality control has gotten worse. Bottom line here is that for any major appliance purchase, you need to budget to include a service contract for any major failures. Overall, appears that we got a bad one in a lot, and judging from other posts, we just got unlucky.

Want to buy a new machine, but i seen below you said "if the water inlet flow is too low it may just drain the rinse water before spinning or due to a sensor reading or something like this" ? This is a difficult problem. If you don't have correct water pressure you are going to have to stick with older style used machines. If you are on a public water system, in the USA, I am pretty sure that they are required by law to provide adequate water pressure to the people they serve. You may want to investigate this and take it up with the public service commission in your state. Otherwise....I have no solution for you other than find an old style machine in good shape. No, you don't need a button to add things to a top load machine, but you get one. Something else to fail. I'm not sure when we forgot how to build anything to last. I'm sure companies enjoy watching people going to spend their money every few years on new junk.

It's impressive that your Whirlpool washer and dryer have served you well for 26 years! Basic, reliable appliances can certainly withstand the test of time. While modern machines may come with additional features, it's understandable that you appreciate the simplicity and durability of your older models. It's true that advancements in technology can sometimes result in more complex designs, but there are still brands and models available that prioritize longevity. It's always good to research and choose products known for their durability if longevity is a priority for you. Thanks for watching!

I have a Bravos that we have been able to replace the actuator and pump on ourselves but now I think the suspension is going out. How much does this to hire someone replace typically? I'm not sure if it's worth the cost to replace the rods or if we should use it until it dies and get a new one. I think it's about 8 years old.
@HarperandKnowles
@HarperandKnowles Жыл бұрын
The cost of hiring a service technician can vary greatly depending on your geographical location. In general, you might expect to pay somewhere between $50 to $200 for a service call, plus the cost of parts. Keep in mind that this is a rough estimate and actual costs can be higher or lower. The suspension rods for a Bravos washer can run in the ballpark of $50 to $80, again depending on where you source the parts. Therefore, you'll want to weigh the potential repair cost against the cost of a new machine. If your machine is already 8 years old and has had multiple issues, it may be nearing the end of its lifespan. However, if it's in good condition otherwise, a repair might extend its life considerably. Ultimately, the decision will depend on your budget, the overall condition of your machine, and the cost-effectiveness of the repair. Thanks for your question, and for watching my videos!

We have the Bravos and so far my husband has been able to find videos on KZbin to repair himself. He currently has a “tub shaft and bearing kit” in the Amazon cart ($50) as they have gone out again. It’s a 15 year old washer and we’re trying to decide if we just buy a new one.

@@reneejohnson7505 I just got a new one recently. The actuator went out again for the third time and it's still bouncing around too much. My husband thinks it could be why the actuator broke. I hated to spend the money but I feel like the new front loader does a better job. Hopefully it lasts 🤞

I bought a whirlpool 5000 washer with the wash plate when they were fairly new to the market and had decent reviews. On my machine all those "options" are pretty much useless, whe water level and wash time stay exactly the same. My workaround is to pre-soak what i can and to add extra water with a external hose, this means i jave to lift a 6 gallon pail with soaking clothes up from the floor, allow the washer to "fill" and then add 3 or 10 gallons of water with an external hose so it will actually clean the clothes. What earthly use is a water saving washer if you have to wash things again to actually get them clean? I should have sprung for the ASpeed Queen which while not water saving does actually clean clothes and is much more reliable

This is called government overreach. When we allow government agencies to make rules we are giving a room full of idiots power over us. Take for instance the requirement for water saving toilets. You have to flush them 3 times before everything goes down! How does that save water? And like you, many people find ways to circumvent these regulations so that their appliances work. I'm all for taking care of the environment but some of the things we suffer at the hands of government agency regulators are ridiculous! Thanks for watching!

I had a whirlpool set I bought in the yar 2000. I still have the gas dryer. It's gone through a couple of fuses and a thermostat here and there but I wish I kept the washer even though the drum rusted in two. I could have replaced that. In the last seven years I have gone through 3 washers and they are all junk. That's what they make, over regulated, unusable junk that doesn't last. I had a five year warranty on my Ge and the circuit board was replaced three times. Now that the warranty expired, the agitator doesn't work. I threw a Maytag out in the alley for junk and I returned the rented Whirlpool washer I started with after my old Whirlpool dies 18 years of service. I'm looking for a good wringer washer now. I hate this new junk they force on us that's designed to fail.I'm currently using my washer with a plunger. It still spins.

I would like to know what Washer and Dryer does Chip use?
@HarperandKnowles
@HarperandKnowles 11 ай бұрын
Chip uses an old style Estate washing machine that I bought in 2009 and is still working. The dryer is one that was given to me because it had a squeal in it and was only two months old when the lady replaced it. It is an Amana. And the squeal was a screw that got caught in the felt drum seal. If either machine goes out I plan to replace them with Speed Queen machines. The best on the market today! Thanks for watching!

I’ve seen cheap rods wear out quickly. You should only use OEM (original equipment manufactured) rods when changing them. You can also check to see if the tub has been bent from overloading. These new washers don't clean clothes well because they are made to use less water, so some have deep water buttons which my daughter almost always uses - so how is she saving water? Also, they supposedly use less electricity, but to get your clothes clean you not only need more water with them you need the longest cycle. A lot of people also say you need to use a second rinse to get all the soap and dirt rinsed away. My daughter usually always uses deep water and second rinse. So, someone tell me how these new machines save water and electricity?

If it is a problem with the pressure transducer you could just change the control board. You can find used boards very reasonably on eBay or buy a new one. I saw a guy that bought some pressure hose and experimented by starting with a long piece and kept cutting segments out of it until he found the perfect hose length for the amount of water he desired in the tub. $400 is an exorbitant amount to charge for fixing this. A magnet can still stick to stainless steel. The cheaper grade of stainless steel *is* magnetic, it's called Martensitic stainless steel. The non-magnetic stainless steels are "Austentic" and more expensive and have more corrosion resistance and have more chromium and nickel. But yes, Maytag is using the cheaper grade of stainless steel, but apparently even though it has more iron and isn't as corrosion proof, that type of cheaper stainless is still used in pumps, valves and boat shafts, medical instruments, kitchen knives, etc. It has good weldability, and other engineering advantages. Ferritic stainless steel is also magnetic, there are more types than just these 3 I mentioned. Who knows which one Maytag uses?
@HarperandKnowles
@HarperandKnowles Жыл бұрын
Maytag, like many other appliance manufacturers, may use different grades of stainless steel for various components in their products. Without specific information from Maytag, it is challenging to determine which exact grade of stainless steel they use for their appliances. Thank you for providing additional information and shedding light on the different types of stainless steel and their characteristics. It's always interesting to learn more about the materials used in our appliances. Your comment is both insightful and informative and adds to the value of the community. It sounds like your water valve isn’t working properly. Disconnect the hoses from the back and check for debris in the inlet filters. If your water inlet flow is too low the machine will time out and drain before the correct pressure is obtained to start the wash cycle. This is a safety feature that prevents your home from being flooded if the pressure transducer is defective. Thanks for watching!

What will happen with these machines is they will wear out the hole beneath the tub hub and no amount of new parts will keep the tub from leaning over and causing an unbalanced situation. About the only way to truly fix this is to replace the tub. If they only made a bushing that you could drive in there it would probably fix that condition. Thanks for watching!
