I'm a bass player. My favourite compressor to play through is the EHX Black Finger, it's a very musical opto compressor. I've tried playing through VCAs and they can feel a bit weird, they kinda suck and pump a bit too much.

I tested my hardware LA2A. It doesn’t act exactly like the Waves plugin but it’s similar. Less compression in the lowend and it compresses more as you raise the test tone. Also let’s up a bit in the 10k and above area. So, yes very similar.

@@panorama_mastering also just tested the UAD. Acts very similar but with less fluctuations. Meaning it had the same up and down behavior as you move through the frequencies but not as drastically different. Maybe similar more to the Waves one. I don’t know why but when testing hardware with plugin doctor the results are much slower. You’d think it wouldn’t matter between plugin or hardware how fast the test tones are implicated but the tones are super slow on the hardware side. So it makes it very time consuming to wait for the dynamic ramp to conclude. Maybe I’m doing something wrong?

You have the sidechain hpf detector half way on the CLA2A. Isn't the frequency detection caused by this, and not an inherent byproduct of optical compressors?

Solid pick-up; and a sore oversight from myself; pulling from my research on LDR's that is a byproduct optical compressor's showcase based on the light-source they use; (This is probably worth further investigation on my part) I had 4 hardware LA-2A's in the studio back in 2013; which would have been great to put in plug-in doctor; but I sold them;

@@panorama_mastering I know that an LA2A has a variable ratio that is dependent upon the input signal. But I never knew of them to compress high frequencies more that low frequencies. If this is the case then how does an LA2A add the high end that it gives it doesn't just sound like harmonics, wouldn't the sound come out darker if it compresses the high end more than the lows? Personally I've always preferred an LA3A as I'm generally not a fan of the distortion an LA2A imparts on the signal but that's just a preference.

Thank you a lot. Is the CL1B reacts the same? Wrapping up, FET if you need snap. Vari Mu if you need to accentuate sustain of any source. Opto comp Excel at controlling sound with a lot of dynamic and frequency range.

I'd assume so; however; it has a gain adjustment for the output and a ratio knob; I'm curious how they've placed that ratio knob; if it's changing the input stage at all; or if it's changing the resistance in the control signal independently... Re; opto; controlling sound with a lot of dynamic and "frequency" range;
