It would be helpful to talk more about fit. I think fewer people than you might think actually know how construction fits particular body types. How to measure a body is a part of this challenge. Also how to know if you have narrow vs wide shoulders… how to know if you have long v short torso and how those understandings may inform what construction you seek. Thanks for the discussion!

YES! and what looks good on different size busts, shoulder width, etc. I usually search finished projects on any piece considered, to see if there are any photos that show a similar body to mine.

Good episode. After many, many cardigan searches, the one I landed on is the Curly Bomber by Tricot Design MCL. This choice was made mainly because the button band is worked at the same time as the body.

It's definitely a plus, I made a cardigan that had the button band knit at the same time and it was great to knit. Ended up giving it away but it was because of a fit issue.

Thanks for mentioning this. The main reasons I do top down is that when it’s done I want to be done and the separate button band has always kept me from doing an adult cardigan.

Hi. I really enjoyed this episode. I thought through many of the issues for choosing a cardigan pattern and yesterday cast on the Timepiece cardigan by Ailbiona McLochlainn yesterday. I believe this clever designer does not get the airtime she deserves . I am working the raglan increases in this top down, integrated button band, v-neck cardi. Her instructions are excellent whilst not being too wordy. Cheers, Ruth from Nova Scotia

I love Alilbiona! I have yet to knit one of her designs but you are right that she deserves more time in the spotlight. She always has clever design choices like those pockets inside the ribbing of the Timepiece!!! Putting her on my list of designers I HAVE to knit in 2024.

Nice chat:) A thought on the “heaviness” of superwash yarn vs. non-superwash. That’s due to the superwash yarn usually being worsted spun and non-superwash yarn often being woolen spun. Woolen spun is lighter /loftier than worsted spun yarn - it’s not the superwash treatment itself that gives yarn more weight/heft. I’ve been pretty obsessed with cardigans recently, I’m far along with a Septmber jacket in a fairly heavy yarn combo, so it should double as a jacket - one advantage of cardigans.
@cloknits
@cloknits 10 ай бұрын
I do think that it's the combination of both because I have some untreated worsted spun fingering weight merino and yes it's a little heavier than the woolen spun but not as much as the superwash. Thanks for mentioning it.

I’m so glad you brought up the point of not making a pull over into a cardigan. I’ve been obsessed with the Here comes the sun sweater, but was really close to buying and planning the pattern to be steeked.

Wow, I just when to check out the pattern and it is beautiful. But yes, I feel like it would require more calculations and adjustments than I care to do, personally.

Interesting and educational video. I have a front loader and spin all my handknits on the spincycle. I would recommende making a larger swatch of non SW wool, soak it and put it on the spincycle to see whether it felts it or not. It might depend on the exact make and model. Mine goes a little back and forth, too. Most front loaders do this to adjust according to the weight of the load to avoid damage on the drum when spinning
@cloknits

That's good to know. I'll try adding a swatch to a spin only load along with a non wool sweater and see what happens. Swatches are just so practical!!!

I prefer to knit raglans. The increases look nice and easy to remember. However my best fitting sweater was a yoke 😢.

Maybe you just didn't find the raglan that is the best fit for you yet. I do find that raglans can be very unflattering when they are not well fitted.

I had a problem with a card I recently that ended up being too small in the shoulders. I don't have broad shoulders at all, and that was disappointing. I was curious to know more about the saddle shoulders and the set in ones. Im going to find episode 1 now. The info you did provide was interesting and ive subscribed. Thanks very much.

Thank you for commenting! I love saddle shoulders because they generally fit really well but are done in the round without seams. I will most likely do a video explaining the difference between the different shoulder constructions.

What a fabulous episode packed with useful information! How I wish I had consumed this before making my first steek project modifying Andrea Mowry’s Metamorphic using Spincycle SW yarns, circular yoke construction and CO at neck rib, versus the yoke. It worked and I feel proud of my bold steeking action, but the garment wouldn’t be so droopy and oversized if I had not turned it into a cardigan. I thought the only mistake was not to change the CO to the yoke and return to pick up the collar ribbing for more structure but now I see how there was more than one factor in play here. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I will be joining your KAL. I need to assess queue and stash but the Macaron Cardigan is in my queue already…

I‘ve acquired a lovely amount of BT Loft in the Caribou marled color. I’m envisioning a longish (I’m 5’2) shawl collared cardigan, in a basic stockinette stitch as I feel the color needs to shine on its own. At first I’d thought about Joji’s Longline cardi, but this afternoon I came across the Walpole cardigan by Hannah Fettig- do either of you have an opinion? My bust measurement is 41” and I’d like to be able to snug this around me, but picked up on Naomi’s advice not to knit an open cardigan with a lot of excess ease. Do you think a 47” measurement would be too much? Thanks, you ladies are so very interesting!🧶🍁

That's a great cardigan choice. I think that 6" of positive ease might be alot for this open cardi yes. If you look at the pictures of the model, it says she has 1 3/4" of positive ease and she can still pull it closed in the front. So I would go for one size below personally.

Excellent video! One thing: please wash and block your swatch!!! Some yarns can grow enormously...... so that you'll end up doing a lot of extra knitting on something that gets far too big the first time you wash it.
@cloknits

Absolutely! We forgot to say it here because it is so obvious to us, swatching without washing doesn't say much.

Thanks so much for this informative video. I learned a great deal. I hope to join in on the make a long. I need suggestions for a cardigan that suits a back hump and large breasts. Any suggestions appreciated. I don’t have a preference for raglan vs other designs but would like to be able to open the top two buttons or do a v neck opening. Thanks again for the video!
@cloknits
@cloknits 10 ай бұрын
I think a V neck is a great idea and probably one with some short rows in the back. A raglan or saddle shoulder construction should work great.
