Hi, I never use cable needles either, they hinder me so much, twisting the stitches over is so easy and quick. I wish I could get on with the interchangeable needles but I always seem to have a problem with the knitting coming off smoothly from the plastic to the rigid metal piece, they frustrate me so much. Other than that I’m on the same page as you with everything else. Like minded people. I look forward to watching your other videos, as I have just discovered you. ❤

Like every other tool, there are interchangeable needles that work better than others. I love Chiaogoo and Lantern Moon, they both have a really smooth join.

I'm on a journey to start knitting socks and this couldn't have come at a better time. Today I am purchasing long cable sock needles and some sock yarn. I'm so excited to get started. Since I've started knitting everyone in my family has come out of the woodwork deciding they want knitwear. Most of them are worthy and I don't mind but because I'm newish at this there are so many things I want to make for myself. I'm usually a selfless maker and sew for others no problem but I find that I'm a little more selfish about my knitting right now. I'd like to get some of my own wishlist done before making things for others. I'm hoping socks will be a way to get items knitted for others a bit sooner than later. I hope I don't sound like a horrible person, I'm usually very giving, but with knitting it's different. Does anyone else find it that way? Also, suggestions for the best sock yarn to start with? I'm in the US.
@cloknits27 минут бұрын
I'm 100% a selfish knitter and that doesn't make me a horrible person. Knitting takes so much time and you should be able to choose wether or not you are going to gift it or keep it to yourself. As for good sock yarn: Regia, KnitPicks Stroll or Felici, Patons Kroy, Lang Lang Jawoll are all great commercial yarns to start off with.

I don't have a pattern for sale right now for these socks, they are a basic recipe that you can adapt to your own size. I could make one if that is of interest but I feel like there are already so many top down gusset sock patterns out there you could take and follow along with.

Your first tip was the most important. I knit that same hat you showed and I ended up ripping it out because the tension was awful with 2 superwash yarns. When I reknit it, I kept one yarn, a superwash gradient, and used an untreated yarn for the other. It worked!

I always think I want a beautiful yarn bowl, but then I remember how heavy they are and that I’d have to keep a project bag for notions still and that just adds the things I have to maintain when I want to knit. I have cable needles and never use them. If I need a cable needle then I use a DPN. I try to have multiple purpose tools, my blocking mat is an irons pad, and my pins are pins for sewing.

I learned to knit from my mom and we carry our yarn on our right hand and use very long needles to be able to hold the working needle under our right arm. I never knew what style it was but mom used to say it was “Spanish “ knitting. I never really saw anybody else knitting how we did. Fast forward 40 years and I want to knit winter hats for my kids. I had some circulars inherited from grandma and decided to keep my yarn on my left hand and was able to go much faster than I did when I worked with yarn in my right hand so now, if I’m knitting in the round I keep my yarn on my left hand and if I’m working back and forth I knit Spanish style. However, last year I knit a cardigan with very thin cotton and the pattern was neck down so I used circulars. The stitches were very open and uneven due to the weight of the garment when I held the yarn in my left hand and I ended up using my right hand to achieve a tighter more even fabric.

I generally start knitting with the new color, use the "weavin' stephen" method for the old color and weave in the new one at the end. Does it make sense?

@silverpromidi I have the yarn, but I have been intimidated with the magic loop method. I have spent a small fortune on various tools for making socks. I hate the minis--they are murder on my hands. I even tried 3 types of looms--yuck! DPNs are too fiddly and I kept losing my place. Anyway, I watched this through once, and have cast on using magic loop. The explanation here is less confusing than the others.
@silverpromidi2 күн бұрын
@@milabulic have to agree with you on the explanations. I got up to the heel before I had to get dinner. Tomorrow I will go to our local craft store and pick up a set of the circular needles and master this sock making! I need to in order to make socks that I can wear when my feet and legs decide to expand.

Loved this video! I enjoy seeing how people move their yarn (walking it down the needles) as that's something I'm trying to learn. I always have to stop and re-bunch the yarn at the end - and I want to learn how to move it automatically while knitting. Thanks for this!
@cloknits2 күн бұрын
Glad it was helpful!
@maryfrank21753 күн бұрын
I don't know why people simply don't remove the needles, put stoppers on, and try it on? I do this all the time, and it's so much faster than moving stitches onto anything else - and you already have the stitches on the cords! JMHO
@cloknits2 күн бұрын
It only works if you have a long enough cord. I like to knit on shorter cords than the circumference I'm knitting so I either have to be ok with losing stitches (which I often do) or put some on other cords
@maryfrank21752 күн бұрын
@cloknits You're right! I also like to knit on shorter cords, so I just unscrew the tip, add a long cord on temp, try on, then replace tip. That's how I've figured it out, but it's by no means the only way!
