Beginner here, thank you very much for your videos! Such a simple idea to use the kit lense to fiddle around our own comfort zone. Just bought an a6000 with the kit (cheaper kombo than bare) and decided to make the tryout range even bigger by buying the Sony SEL-18135 lens, maybe it will be a "one fits all" but watching more and more of your videos I doubt that...there are a lot of great lenses out there pheeew. Keep on going, much appreciating your excellent content!

Thank you! Got the Sony 50mm f/1.8 with my a6300, I have various lenses for my old Sony a700 and one of them is the basic kit lens, 18-70mm. Least used focal length on it was probably anything under 35 so for prime lens the 50mm is fine. I will buy an adaptor for those old lenses because I have really good Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 that has 1:2 macro as well, I kinda like it.. moving from A-mount to E-mount is going to take a while

Very good video thank you Toms. I have six lenses but only two primes (both third party) and a new camera. I'm still interested in this question though. I took a sample of a few hundred of my photos taken in the past (with compact cameras) and looked at the focal lengths used. To my surprise approx 60% of the photos were taken at the minimum focal length available to me, 24mm. I thought I wanted a substantial telephoto but only 5% of my photos were with a focal length greater than 150mm. So that tells me that I need to go wider than I thought. Another advantage of going wider is that one can sometimes crop a wider well taken image whereas one can't recover subject matter missed because one's lens was too long.
@TomsJurjaks2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Jeff and I like your thought process. I think often we fail to simply analize our work, behavior and habits when it comes to photography. Understanding exactly how you do things is a major step that will lead you to make the right decision of purchasing the right gear. Well done 👌

@@TomsJurjaks The 24mm weighting comes about because most of my photos are landscapes taken while travelling.

I just bought the 35mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2 Sony E for my a6000 witch I need in the studio since my 50mm is a bit to close for the studio. Hope i will like it. Would like the sigma 16mm but it is twice as expensive and the tamron Seems pretty good at anything. Keep up the great work!
@TomsJurjaks2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ola, yeah that seems to be a pretty popular lens. Not the greatest aperture (f2.8) but for the price it seems very justifiable. Im also hoping you will like it. Cheers!
@TheOschedin2 жыл бұрын
@@TomsJurjaks I don't really care about the f-stop. In the studio I do f7-11 and outside, I usually go for f4 and some closeups I go 1.8 on my 50. So 2.8 isn't really a big deal. ;) For the price it's really good.

Hey Tom, what a great content, short and sweet 😊. I have a unique scenario. I am a visual artist and I have Sony a6000, which I had bought used and body only. Then I have FE 50 mm 2.8 zoom lense. I use them to take pictures of my paintings which are usually not bigger than 20" * 24". I usually take pictures from distance 5 ft - 8 ft. My struggle is with taking sharp pictures, and that's why I am planning to buy a prime lense. Can you please suggest if a 30 mm prime lense would work or need even wider. Thank you
@TomsJurjaks Жыл бұрын
Hey Manish! Its actually quite simple. I didn't fully understand which zoom lens you have, because you said "50mm 2.8", but if I assume its something like 16-50mm then just simply zoom in and out to a point which you usually use to take those pictures. Then just "read" which focal length it is. The zoom lens will tell you which focal lens you should get.

@@TomsJurjaks Hi Toms, thank you for prompt response and sorry for the confusion. It is FE 50 mm 2.8 Macro Lense
@TomsJurjaks Жыл бұрын
Ahh okay, then you will not really know what focal length to choose @@createwithwatercolor if you have a friend with a zoom lens, borrow and see which focal length you like the best, but on top of my head I think like a 23mm on apsc should be fine. Its not gonna be too wide and not too zoomed in. 30mm will also fit in my opinion

@TomsJurjaks2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jozsef! Thanks for your support. To be honest, it actually doesnt matter much what lens you use, because you would be shooting the photos in controlled environment. You could easily even use the kit lens. What matters is that you have a good lightning and a sturdy tripod.

good presentation, 35mm focal length is good to start with, 85mm should be the next thereafter. these two focal lengths should take care of more than 70% of shoots

Thank you my friend! Yeah, thats a good combo. And then if you feel like having something in between, can get a 50mm or swap 85 to 50 or maybe swap 35 to something 16 or 20mm if someone likes wider shots. There are sooo many ways to go about it.
