No mention on waist width, from someone with a size 12 us boot I struggled when starting off due to guides like this one. The common answer i used to get was to "look for 'wide' models", but there are many boards that do have a wider platform but not considered a 'wide' model. Ideally board manufacturers need to start advertising maximum boot size. At least YES (and maybe more) advertise their board width at reference point which is a HUGE aid for me and other like-footed riders.

when I buy my new boards. I typically look at the effective edge, the waist width, and the contact length. When I look for a new board I usually find a few board length sizes that are within 5cm or so from what I'm used too or faily close and then I look at the Effective edge and waist width to determine if I can size up or size down. like OP said it also depends on board stiffness, what the board is going to be used for and your ability level. if you want to ride a longer length board then what's recommended for your height and weight then a mellow board that's not as aggressive or stiff will help out alot
@martykasa7864

Yep. That's how I shop. Waist width first, then the weight range... I don't even care what length it is.
@Natedoc808
@Natedoc808 15 күн бұрын
It also depends heavily on which boot model and which binding. Take a piece of cardboard and cut it to the waist width, then place your boot/binding on it and check how far you'd have to lean to drag toe/heel.

Hi Matt good video, I recently bought a Capita DOA 157W. I'm 5'11" tall and weigh 154 lbs. I was told this size should work for me, but after watching some videos, it seems like the board might be too short for my height and weight. What do you think?
@PeterGlennSports
@PeterGlennSports 9 күн бұрын
If you’re into freestyle or all-mountain riding, the 157W should be a good length for you. If you’re leaning more towards freeride and want a bit more stability at high speeds or in powder, you could potentially consider going up to a 159W or 160W for more float

Given your size, an all-mountain board that's 162-165 works best. If you’re planning to spend more time in the park as you progress, go for a slightly shorter option (around 159-161), but make sure it’s still within the weight range of the board for proper support and performance

Hey Matt! I’m 6’1”, size 12 shoe, and 180-185 lbs. looking at the Jones Frontier, I see two options that stand out: the 161W (ideal weight 150-200) and the 164W (ideal weight 170-220). I’m not sure which of these to choose, since I sit right in the middle of both. I wear 26,5 cm/MP Salomon boots right now and looking to go one size up because my feet feel very squazed after a day or an hour of boarding (very red also) and also I takes long and it is painful to get out of my boots. I am in the market for the Salomon launch dual boa in 27,0 or maybe 27,5. Now ride a 152 Lib Tech Skate Banana. My fist ever board, progressief a lot in it bit now looping for a stiffer directional and kittel longer board because i do all-mountain and want to get better at carving and need a stiffer board for that. I tried to boards like the salomon assasin 159, the jones Frontier 159 and the lib tech terrain wracker 157. Liked a three of the boards really well. The terrain wracker was very Stanley, really love the magne-traction om it for carving but a little to playful for me. The salomon assasin, i rode for a whole week in switserland, i really liked. Was the forst ever directional board i tried and felt very stable. The directional Shape of it helped me the most put of the three boards with making great turnster, staying with my preferred foot forward. The frontier also I really liked. Felt very stable and carving felt great on it. I tried the frontier and tw indoors in the Netherlands so find it difficult to really compare them to the assasin which I tried for a way longer period in the actual mountains. What board and which length could you recommend for me to buy?

To be honest all three of these boards are great, you can’t go wrong with any of them. Hello Peter Glenn and thanks for your video. I have questions since I watched your tutorial. I’m snowboarding for 10 seasons now and decided to buy my own setup which turned to a full nightmare snowballing lost of money. Firstly my boots went to a wrong sizing due to unscrupulous professional (1,5cm bigger than my actual size, thought I could trust. I trusted him because I always rode my all day shoe size). You know what happened next right ? Could tighten as much as I wanted the boots and had no support + unneccessary hot points. After that, I finally got the right boot size (27MDP : imagine going from a 29,5 at start to a 27…). I decided to buy a Nitro team tls pair of boots. Then it came to the board, I’m mainly doing slopes but I want to have the possibility to do whatever I can with my board if I feel like it (flat, Park, powder, side slopes, learn carving) and Mountains twins from Jones came as a good option. From my feet sizing and weight Jones recommanded me a 156W or 157. The only sizing I could get from my shop was 156W. My sizing is 178cm and weight is 75kg. I’m not so sure what happened after I bought thèse boots and this snowboard but I don’t feel confident on it, have issues doing good turns, falling for « no reason », can’t go straight on a Line, can’t take speed and so on (as a beginner again). Not sure if it comes from my bindings (Nitro phantom), my boots (Nitro team TLS) or board (Sizing or the board itself mountain twins jones). Maybe a combo of all of them? From your video (I wish I saw it before…) I should have a board around 160cm but how did I make the wrong choice respecting board tech… Can you give me your opinion on this that might help me for next season because I’ll have to do something anyways. My last 5 sessions came to frustration and sadness… Hopefully I only need to change my board. Thank you very much for your answer and work.

Yeah, at your size boards in the 158-160 range would be waaaaay better. And for your foot size you DEFINITELY don't need to be on a wide board. Having a board ht is too small will not hold you when you start riding faster and the unneeded extra width will make it slow and sluggish from edge to edge. Hi Matt, can you please help me out. I’ve just purchased a yeasayer from Burton. It’s a flat rocker with 3 flex. I weigh 60 kg (132 lb) and I am 160 cm (5’3) tall. They sold me a 140 cm board, but the chart says that it’s for the 36-54 kg weight range. So I am basically 6 kg overweight for that board. I am a beginner/intermediate and my last rental (last year) was lower than my chin and it was my best season of boarding I’ve done 3 in total), but maybe that’s because I am becoming better. Do you think I have made a bad purchase? I did not pay attention to the chart and no one at the store told me that weight should be considered. It is my first board. I am so bummed that I cannot sleep. Thanks for helping me out of my misery. If you think that it will not work I will try and return it, but it was in a promotion and in Belgium they usually don’t take back items that were sold in promotion. Thanks a lot! Btw it’s a model from 2019 and they lied that it’s from two seasons ago.

Any recommendations for a fun powder board for someone 5’10, 220lbs, size 10 feet? I’m an advanced rider. I’m also thinking of getting a twin like the Jones All mountain Twin or something.
@PeterGlennSports
@PeterGlennSports 9 ай бұрын
For a standard board like the All Mountain Twin that’s easy, the 160 would be your best bet. When it comes to pow boards it can be a little trickier as half are volume shifted so it really depends. One board you might check out is the Jones Stratos 159. Rad shape that kills it in the pow when you drop the bindings back in the “Float Pack” inserts, but it’s a surprisingly versatile board when the bindings are in a more traditional placement. Even as a freestyle ride it’s not bad at all. Check it out here -> www.peterglenn.com/product/jones-stratos-snowboard-mens-1

Hey Matt. I was looking to get a Capita DOA board. I am 5'5 and 190 lbs. Based off of the formula, it puts me at a 148, but on the Size chart for Capita DOA boards based off of weight it is suggesting at least a 154. Good stuff Matt. I am thinking burton gril master. I am 5’10” 185 lbs. size 12 boot. Burton website put me in 155w. Size chart shows 160 could work too. The board is listed as a little more than medium stiff. Most of my riding is in midwest where the runs are not very wide, not a ton of powder, sometimes heavy traffic. I intend to ride this laid back slow with my kids as they are learning to ride this year. I initially saw 155w and was shocked but after watching your video 155w doesn’t sound so wild. What do you think?

Up to you, with a size 12 you don’t really NEED the wide to be honest (video link below). For the style of riding you are talking about have you considered the 158 Skeleton Key? Hi, I have a question. does it matter if your bindings stick out a little bit on the side of the board?
@PeterGlennSports
@PeterGlennSports 9 ай бұрын
Not something that is normal but I have seen it before. There are a lot of factors as to if this would be a problem. It depends on your riding style and level, also the board/binding combo you have. @@mikmaissan2838 I'm not too familiar with Firefly, but to be completely honest from what I can find online it seems like they are/were more of a basic brand that might not be super focused on performance in their designs. 9 times out of 10 that means they have to build the bindings bigger and bulkier to make up for durability of using more basic plastics. Which could make a lot of sense with the situation you are in. Do they fit your boots properly? Most binding companies around the boot size US 9-10 area is where they usually switch from one size to the next so it is also a possibility the bindings might be too big in general.

One other thing to note, is I have a video releasing soon that is essentially all about riding rocker dominant boards vs camber boards. @@PeterGlennSports glad to hear a 70UW is coming! Looking forward to checking out your new video. My main issue with C2X is that the middle of the board feels catchy on hard pack so I have to be extra careful to always be on edge if my board is perpendicular with the fall line. A week ago I caught the middle of my heel edge on a particularly icy, steep groomer and smashed my shoulder. Hopefully I can pick up some tips from your new video to avoid that happening again!
@PeterGlennSports
@PeterGlennSports 10 ай бұрын
@@abyde Yeah it might help a little, but in a different way. Pertaining to what happened to you specifically, think about this. You caught the middle of your rocker dominant board sliding side ways, if you would of been riding a cambered board you would of caught your tips and went down anyway. Between those 2 profiles you have at least 1 part of your board that is always in contact with the snow and with camber you probably would of caught the edge faster being that the contact points by your tips would of had the most pressure in the snow. Hopefully that makes you feel a little better 🤷‍♂

When it comes to a "park only" style board its up to you as to how much you want to downsize. For your size I personally wouldn't suggest going smaller than the 153-155 range though. Just remember, smaller board = softer board. What you might gain in slightly easier swing weight you loose in pop and stability which is way more important. Specifically for the Twinpig you would for sure be able to drop down a little more as that is a volume shift board. It is only a 3-6cm shift though so the 151 would be your size. I'm 6ft 165lb intermediate rider. I went with a Burton Custom 156, and it's very very poor at holding an edge.. How big is the chance I totally messed up with the sizing for this one?

I’m 6’ 3” 240lbs, I just bought a 165 W Burton Instigator. Thought the wide size was better for my size 13 boots.

100%, any boot size 13 and up can definitely benefit from the wide boards.

Hmm not sure, the calculation at 6ft would have me on a 164. First board I got was a 159w and it was fast but hard to control in trees. Dropped to a 157.5 GNU riders choice and much easier to control, then added a 160 GNU hyper for more powder and freeride and both work good. 164 sounds super long to me though.

Like Matt said in the video it can vary from board to board. But also depending on your weight the 164 would only be like adding 2cm to either side of your foot compared to your Hyper, which is super minimal. As long as you are having fun and the board can be stable under your feet in all situations that is the most important part. 👍 enjoy the ride!

May I ask what your height, weight, and boot size is? That’s sort of the range of board sizes I’m looking at too.

@@theneighbor4209yea I’m 6ft 170lbs and a 10.5 boot (Salomon echo’s). I was really torn between staying 157 on the hyper since I like how quick the RC 157.5 turns in trees but after speaking to the gnu rep he said either would work but for me on that board to go 160 since it’s setback all the length is in the nose and the tail length is a larger factor in turning. Worked out good for me both boards work well.

@@jessehill3780 Thank you! That helps a lot. The board I’m looking at is a set back twin hybrid with more rocker than camber. I happen to be 6’1, weigh 180lbs, and wear a size 11.5 boot. The 160 only comes in a wide size but with a boot that big I need a wide board regardless. With your information regarding heights the board should be a perfect fit 👌

You may or may not need wide. I’d watch these guy video on wide boards and if you need one. My first was a 159w and everyone said I needed a wide. It was tough to learn on because the response is slower and you don’t have the same leverage on the board. I’ve had a much easier time on a regular board and when I was looking for a secondary to complement the RC I was tempted to try an orca or warping but the whole wide thing just left me very nervous I wouldn’t get the response I wanted.
