I live on disability due to a work injury and am on a fixed income. I can't afford the full system but maybe just using the supper on an old used system I can buy locally would fit into my budget. I am trying to reduce/eliminate processed sugar in my diet with local natural honey. Thanks for posting and for having an economical approach for those on fixed incomes.

Hi Charlie, Yes that is a good option if you are on a budget, you can also look at adding just the Flow Frames to an existing box. Our Flow Frames are available separately in sets of 3, 4, 6 and 7. These are designed to be used with existing Langstroth deep hives and can be purchased with or without a super box. I will be adding a hybrid Super to my apiary next Spring. Very happy with my Flow Hive II. Had it for 3 years now and we get about 17 to 25 lbs of yummy So Cal Wildflower honey and leave them the rest. ❤ Love your invention Cedar.

My question is, after assembling the flow hive, how/what do you do to make the bees live in the hive? Do I have to buy bees? Do they come by themselves? I have no idea

You will have to purchase bees for the hive. It's called a nuc, a small box of bees and approx 4 frames with brood and some honey. Check with your local bee keepers.

@@Alan20108 it’s very rare they’ll just jump in themselves, unless there’s a swarm looking for somewhere to go. Generally you have to put the bees in the hive yourself. Purchase a nuc, package of bees or take a split from someone else’s hive if they’ll let you. Best to check with local bee keepers for help. If you have lots of bees in the area maybe someone near by could help you with some bees.🇦🇺👍🐝🍯

Very Rare indeed, TrickyTrev... that is why I was SO blown away by a Swarm choosing to just Move Into my justcleaned empty hive. Too unusually long Winter, should have added sugar, didn't, thought they were OK under a Normal So Cal Winter. All was fine, Last cold wet Storm in March... Tues, Wed, Thurs. No activity seen that Friday. Opened up to a deed out on Sat. As I cleaned it, a few Scouts checked us out... Tuesday a Swarm did indeed just move in!! But I know what a Rare Miracle that was. One reQueen later ( known genetics) I am prepping for Winter with a strong Colony and will better watch them in late Winter early Spring. I will Not again underestimate their food. ❤

Could i attach another brood box to the bottom of a hive, hive 2 or hive 2+? Ive read that having multiple broods can help the stability of the hive. Also, in the winter, do you need to allow the queen into the hive to prevent her freezing?

What do you mean by stability? Additional brood boxes are generally used if the bees need more honey stores for themselves or if they are a really productive and large bee colony. I understand that the discount offered is really appealing, there is no way we could get our price that low. We do often have promotional sales, with hives bundles with beekeeping equipment or a discount code across our product range. nice hive. I was a commercial beekeeper for many years until I retired. The problem with a hive like this is that because of the cost It can never be anything else than a very expensive toy. Way too expensive. Nearly $1000 for a single hive is just outrageous.

Hi Alessio, We realise that our Flow Hive can feel like a big investment, however, this outlay can be weighed up against the need for expensive extraction equipment and the amount of labour involved with traditional harvesting methods. In the long run, the amount of time, effort and expensive extraction equipment required to harvest from a Langstroth hive make the pricing comparable. Flow technology is the first of it’s kind in the world. As with any new invention, the pricing is reflective of this. We aim to do business with all those involved in the creation of our products in an ethical and sustainable manner, and this is a further contributing factor to the price of our products. All plastics used are of the highest quality available, all timber used is sustainably sourced, harvested, and milled, which means it is more expensive than using lower grade, less environmentally conscious timber sources. All staff are paid fair wages and employed in fair-trade conditions.
