From Iowa here. Second year keeper. Tried all tips and tricks with no success until a Flow forum fellow recommended putting a capped frame of brood and nurse bees in super. Finally success! Worked for all three hives. Once they filled out the wooden frame with honey they started really working Flow frames.

I will try this technique this season here in Tennessee. It makes sense that it will help to spread a bit of wax over the untouched Flow frame to get the bees started. I'm on my 3rd year using a Flow hive and it's quite amazing how well it works. Still there are many tips and tricks to learn to get better with each season. Thank you! Don't expect your bees to start using the flow super before they have occupied at least 80% of the brood box. It's common sense that they will use all the space that's closest to the entrance before they make use of the additional upstairs space. It also takes a large amount of nectar to make the wax needed to seal up the cells in the flow frames. At some point in the summer there should be a few weeks where there is heaps of nectar available to your bees, and it's at that stage that they will generally go ballistic making comb and storing nectar. Don't expect early results. Some folk put a brood frame in the flow super, but I don't advise this because any drones hatching from it will then get trapped above the queen excluder, and there is the risk of accidentally leaving the queen in the flow super which then starts getting filled with brood. I've done this myself and it takes a long time to put this right if you get caught out! On another note, I really wish that the flow hive system came with frames having foundation in them. A lot of folk buying flow hives are beginners, and trying to deal with all the cross comb caused by foundationless frames can be at the very least daunting, and at the worst, off-putting. Every time you're cutting and moving comb, you are putting bees at risk with the leaking nectar, honey, and comb. You're encouraging robbing, and also putting the queen at risk. So, I hope that Cedar and co will have a good think about putting foundation in their frames. Let's face it, if someone can afford these kits, they can afford a few dollars more for some basic foundation to help the bees get the right idea.

I used some burr comb and some pure block wax I bought from a bee supply company. I melted it all down and used a paint brush to paint the melted beeswax onto all 7 of the flow frames. We really haven't gotten a good Spring flow yet as our weather here in Oklahoma has been crazy this year. Hopefully that will change soon and the bees will start drawing out and filling the frames soon.

Waxing the Flow Frames is good but its actually better to use the wax from the same hive and just push some small chunks into the surface of the comb. So that the bees are attracted to the pheromone and any honey residue present. -Kieran

Last fall a lone bee was hanging out on a nearby table in the yard. he looked hungry so I poured him some Sprite on the table. He liked it. I came back awhile later and the mostly empty sprite can was on the ground. I checked and he was in the can drinking the Sprite.

I have a Flow Hive Box … I was wondering why the center artificial combs become dark, as if they have had brood. I run a queen excluder between brood box and Flow box … in one of my boxes there was even drones, which was strange. But in general they all tend to have dark frames in the middle, with no drones visible.

The harvest happens in the top box, the bees nest is in the bottom box. A queen excluder is often used in beekeeping this prevents the queen from laying where the bees store extra honey. So brood is unharmed, there are also safety gaps built into the mechanism so even if a bee is crawling inside when opened it can crawl out and doesn't get harmed, the bees fill these gaps with wax as they build out the comb. go.honeyflow.com/pages/how-flow-works

Hi Darren, it is important to add the Flow Super to brood boxes that are filled with bees, in some case bees are quite content with using two deep brood boxes in the first year, and sometimes using two brood boxes actually means using two mediums which. equates to just a bit more space than a single deep. Flow Frames are made from high food grade plastics, The clear viewing ends of the frames, as well as the honey tube and caps, are made from a virgin food grade co-polyester. The manufacturers have assured us that it's not only BPA-free, but also free from bisphenol-S or any other bisphenol compounds. Third-party labs have tested this material and the results have demonstrated that it is free of estrogenic and androgenic activity. The centre frame parts are made from a virgin food grade polypropylene which is also free from any bisphenol compounds and is widely accepted as one of the safest plastics for food contact. -Kieran

@@FlowHive Thank you for such a detailed description of structural plastic materials that are used in the production of sliding frames. I even found out about the existence of bisphenol-S (along with A and F). This means that polypropylene is the most durable and suitable material for the manufacture of honeycomb frame elements. It must be assumed that before putting the nectar into honeycombs, the bees cover the artificial cells with wax. Therefore, honey does not have long-term contact with synthetic materials.

If you're trying to say that you are thinking of having 2 hive colonies, that each colony will have a brood box, a queen, a queen excluder, and a super, I can tell you that that seems like a good set up to me. Just make sure the excluder is between the brood box and the super that way the queen doesn't lay in the honey super. Also, of course make sure those colonies have bees.
