Great video - scaling isn't everything... picking subjects that you think scale well but performing badly in them is not going to boost your ATAR :( Remember 2020 Year 12s your UAC Early Bird applications can be submitted until 30 September 2020 (then the application fee increases $). Also keep in mind your ATAR is telling you your POSITION in relation to all other students, your HSC is telling you your PERSONAL PERFORMANCE (two different numbers meaning different things!). The only way you can increase your position is by having a good personal performance - you can't control the competition because you can't control what other students are doing. Check out our videos for ATAR and NSW/ACT university entry related content :D

I'm in year 10, maths is my worst subject and I know it's optional in year 11 and 12 but I'm worried if I don't pick it I won't get into university. I'm always changing my mind on what I want to be but right now I want to be a primary school teacher or Journalist.

USYD has Maths requirements, but most universities are fairly flexible. I believe to get into Primary School teaching there is a min requirement around numeracy that you have to meet. So St Maths could still be a good option to ensure you meet this. For journalism you won't need Maths!

Hey, apparently my atar subjects I've chosen are quite content heavy (Psychology, Politics + Law, Modern History, and Literature) so for my fifth and sixth subject I wanted to go for subjects that don't have such a workload as i have a job that i need to maintain throughout my two years of atar as well. Out of these four subjects what two would you recommend; English Standard, French: Second Language, Visual Arts and/or Drama? I'm not sure which uni i really want to go to yet but i wish to study Criminology and Justice, and Psychology and my end goal is to become a criminological psychologist. Thank you so much!

To confirm, have you looked at what the assumed knowledge/prerequisites are for your dream courses at university? I'd double check to make sure - Pyschology usually requires Mathematics, which I note you haven't taken! Beyond this, your 4 subjects you are thinking about choosing - given none of them relate directly to your degree choices, I'd go with what you think you will enjoy the most :)

I want to pick Advanced english, advanced math, biology, chemistry, physics and languages. I love science but people have been saying that the work would be too much. But I'm deteremined to work hard to achieve my goals, but I have these fear of being a failure because of my english (I'm not born in australia, came as a refugee). Do you think these subjcts will be helpful for my career or is it too much? thank you for your time!

Hi, I’ve already picked my subjects for year 11 and 12 (advanced english, advanced maths, ancient history, modern history, biology and music 2) based on passion, as I’m not sure what I want to study at uni. Despite this, one of the directions I have been contemplating is biomedicine or something along that line. My only issue is that I’m not interested in taking chemistry. Does that mean that I should pursue something else and ditch the idea completely, as biology is strongly linked to chemistry? If so, what careers would go well with the subjects that I have chosen?

I’m currently regretting my subject choices as a Year 11 student about to transition to Year 12. I am planning on dropping 3 unit mathematics and studying advanced (which I enjoy much more than extension) for the HSC but I’m concerned about the scaling since I really want to get into high atar courses (such as law and medicine). I’m pretty satisfied with my other subjects (biology, chemistry, legal studies, adv English and SOR1) but I’m scared that not doing an extension subject will make getting a 95+ atar harder 😥

I think it really depends on how well you go in your other subjects. Ultimately, if you score well in them (e.g. Band 6 results), the impact on scaled marks will be minimal.

@@ArtofSmartTVyeah, thanks still not too sure. I've heard that economics tends to be something a lot of people are required to take at university anyway, so is a good way to get ahead. FYI - Legal studies isn't a pre-req or assumed knowledge to study a Law degree, so you can choose whether you want to take it or not. It's great if you want to see if you're interested in law (although a law degree is still quite different from the HSC Legal Studies course). Economics is about economic policy - so interest rates, budget spending, unemployment, inflation etc, while Business Studies is about the key components of a business (Human Resources, Marketing, Finance, Operations). I think it will depend on what you're more interested in? Note: Economics scales better than Business Studies, but is also more conceptually difficult.

Adv Maths is a good idea for Pharmacy. No pre-reqs for English Adv though, so you can take either.

i don't know which teacher should i go and ask. Is the head teacher or the deputy? the school is like forced me to choose math standard even though i wants to go to math advance. can they have the right to do that?

I think to start with the Head of Maths is a good place! And then if that isn't getting you anywhere, you can go to a Deputy.

Im starting year 12 with Maths ext 2, Bio, Chem Phys, Science Ext and Eng Adv which is 13 units, The only subject which I don't particularly enjoy is chemistry (other than english) but it is a prerequisite at a couple uni's for medicine, do you think the workload of 13 units is unmanageable and do you think it's worth keeping chemistry
@ArtofSmartTV
@ArtofSmartTV 4 жыл бұрын
I think 13 units is manageable, but you will need to be a very good time manager. If you want to study Medicine, then you don't really have an option and should keep Chemistry. Your better option if the workload get's too difficult would be drop Extension Science, which takes you down to 12 units.

Howdy! Awesome video, I thought you had some wonderful tips. I'm currently a Year 10 student and want to be a high school teacher (teaching English, HSIE and possibly Drama and PDHPE), however, I'm not entirely sure how everything works, like what major works are, how many 'units' or 'courses' I need to select in Year 11, or even much about whether I need to do maths or not. If I may be a bother: 1: how many electives or rather, courses do I get to choose for year 11? (I know there are compulsory subjects like English and Religion (at my Catholic school) but how many subjects would I get to choose (2 or 3 perhaps)? 2: what are major works? 3: is there any way I can not do maths in year 11 and 12 or is that a non-negotiable, compulsory subject? Thank you for reading this - any help or feedback you have would be greatly appreciated. ~ Bella, Yr 10 student wanting to become a high school teacher

@ArtofSmartTV 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Bella! Are you in NSW? If so, the only compulsory subject is English which is 2 units and Studies of Religion (at your school). You can pick SOR1 which is worth 1 unit. This means you have 9 other units you can pick (In Y11 you must pick 12 units, minus 2 for English, 1 for SOR). Ideally if you want to become a teacher for English/History/Drama, I'd recommend then that you take either Ancient or Modern History and Drama at least. Maths is not a compulsory subject, so you don't need to take it. Major works are larger pieces of writing or performances (e.g. with Drama) that you need to create.

ArtofSmartTV Hey! Yes, I’m in NSW - thank you so much for your response! It really cleared up a few concerns I had re: entering Year 11 and 12. Very relieved that I don’t have continue my maths studies in my senior years - I love maths but it’s not my strongest subject. Thanks again!! Your response really helped, I greatly appreciate it. :D

Hello, tomorrow we have this interview thing about the subjects and by tomorrow everything should be filled in but It's really stressing me out since I'm just unsure and I don't really have passion for something whatsoever. I have chosen 3 subjects so far and they are Accounting, Biology and Maths Methods. Thing I have an idea to be Radiographer like x ray and that and have accounting as my back up but I'm just not really sure ab it since what if idk something better fit for me is there?? I was considering doing Psychology for whatever reason and Chemistry but I'm not really 'passionate' about science so.. but, I think I can handle 2 science and have 8 units/week and that leaves me to 1 more subject.

If you want to keep health sciences courses open for you at university, then Chemistry is a good choice! I'm assuming you'll also have to pick an English subject given it's compulsory as well?
