I do maths physics chemistry and music. people are always like ooo that's quite an odd mix but I swear doing music as well as the sciences was the best choice I made for A level. Doing basically nothing but mathsy stuff, the relief I feel when I walk into the music room is the best part of my day. Although you still need to work hard, I get to have more fun and freedom in the subject. I swear it's the only thing keeping me sane atm 😂 and on UCAS it shows you have creativity and confidence performing n all that stuff. Why am I saying this? because if anyone here is conflicted on whether they should do arts or sciences, I say do both. I would highly recommend having at least one creative subject that you enjoy and are good at. It'll get you the grades, get you that diverse UCAS application, and mental sanity. What's not to like? There's my advice, have a good day ❤

I've just started Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Music - although I'm aiming towards biochem and genetics, I'm loving being able to spend even more time practising cello/piano - it's such an amazing outlet... although there is still quite a lot of work it seems!! But I'm loving all 4 so much ☺️Glad that you're enjoying your A Levels too ✨🎶

I'm doing Bio chem and maths, although I wishhh I could choose subjects such as music, art, drama, etc but unfortunately my school doesn't offer them :( your advice was really nice!!!
@yumnaismail58457 жыл бұрын
I'm in year 11 and I am equally good at the arts and the sciences, so there's no clear cut direction to go in. I'm definitely thinking of choosing biology and chemistry but for the third option I'm stuck between geography, english and maths. I do want to do an arts subject because I love a good range of subjects but I don't want it to be a wasted a level.
@shibsy7 жыл бұрын
Yumna Ismai it shouldn't be a wasted A Level. Most uni courses require 3 A level grades, and usually only a maximum of 2 of them need to be a certain subject. That means the 3rd A level grade can be from any subject you want! All that matters is what grade you get in it. So if you think you would get a higher grade in an arts subject than you would in other subjects, then I'd recommend the arts subject. But then again you have plenty of time to think about it! Good luck in your GCSE's this year x

i'm not sure whether this tip of mine will help others, but what i did when choosing my a-level subjects was look up the syllabus on subjects i wanted to take. i browse through the contents just to get the idea of what i'll be expecting if i were to take that subject. (e.g. do i like learning about this part? will i be able to cope with it? can i see myself furthering my studies in this subject area?) besides that, i searched for a-level textbooks at a bookstore and flipped through the contents to see whether i'll enjoy learning it. xx

@dominicwhitaker95987 жыл бұрын
I didn't do F Maths or Economics at GCSE but I did get a 9 in Maths and Physics as well as a 5 in English Lang and Lit which was enough to get me into a great school to do those subjects. I personally find that the maths is quite easy to understand it's just remembering it which is the problem as there's a lot more content to learn than in GCSE Maths.

+Aena Mustafa You have to do subjects that interest you if you want to do well. Maths might be a good choice if you want to do a science subject at uni (don't take my word for it tho I'm not a science person) but personally I think it's the most boring one of my subjects. In the end it's up to you. Trust your gut feeling and it'll lead you to the right place eventually even if it's not where you expected to end up when you set out.

@luhenyangkun21026 жыл бұрын
Aena Mustafa I do those 3 and sociology as well - I’ve been having a tough time looking at what I want to do as I love the science side of psychology, much more than the more ambiguous theories etc. I’ve been looking at medicine to go into psychiatry or going on to research in psychology but also recently found neuroscience degrees - I’m not sure about scholarships but I know they are hard to get but there’s bursaries which can help out with different parts. We have them at my sixth form for things like transport as our buses are very expensive as we are a huge school in a very rural area.

@@luhenyangkun2102 thats interesting , whenever i tell somebody i take psychology i can weird looks lol even my mom doesnt agree with me but i was looking at german uni requirements and apparently they want math and a language !! Now i am not sure what to do , i was lookig at biochemistry,pharmacy and neuroscience courses too but i just started AS so maybe i would change my ming next yr. Kinda regretting not taking maths since it seems very useful for uni options and i got kinda interested in computer science and IT related courses cuz they make alot of money lol but they require math too, thoughts? Btw for psychiatry do u have to give the UK medical entrance exam to get into a medical college and then later on specialize , how long does it take ? Do u think it pays well? What other careersor fields do u think are booming and have alot of scope? Any tips for Bio and chem AS exams? 😅😣
@luhenyangkun21026 жыл бұрын
Aena Mustafa I don’t take maths and I don’t regret it - I’m not good at it and I think you can do just fine without it as long as you can apply it in subject (like chemistry, biology and psychology - which I can do). For me, year 12 so far has just been getting used to everything. I’ve barely looked at unis other than entry requirements and what A-levels they want. For most medical you need chemistry and one from maths, physics and biology from what I’ve seen. You need the MCAT and some unis want the BMAT as well. I also believe in total for a medicine degree it’s about 7 years for psychiatry. Including 5 years of university/medical school (we combine it rather than doing pre-med and then going on to medicine) and then 2 years of specialist training/interning in your chosen field. I think that you need to be more confident in your choices, getting interested in something because you think it will pay well isn’t necessarily going to make you happy. You really need to do something you love and I chose my options around that. Many people I know hate their subjects already and we’re less than 3 months into our courses. We were given a 2 week induction period as well where our teachers really gave us a taste of the subject and then we were able to change our subjects around that. Are you set on going to university outside your home country or have you been looking at home as well?
@aena59956 жыл бұрын
@@luhenyangkun2102 one of my friend changed subjects and picked math instead and my mom started to say that not takin maths can be a disadvantage since alot of courses at uni require it and i have no actual plan on what to think career wise. I got a B in maths and so wasnt really planning on taking it for alevel but since everybody made it sound like its such an important subject and that we should take only the harder subjects if we wanna go to a good uni it kinda made me think twice about it . What if we change our career plans by A2 what then ? Then i started to loose interest in psycho but maybe i should just try to best grades in these subjects. I am planning on german unis but the math and language requirement put me off and maybe Canadian universities but when i started looking into things i found out about computer science and software engineering courses and i legit dont have any background on but seems interesting. Ppl say thst we should just take th3 hardest subjects cuz our parents are gonna pay for it and stuff but the education system is soo weird , we just cant have all our options open unless we take 10 alevels or something lol. I started to kinda hate my subjects too and lost focus and interest not knowing whats happening at all and kinda miserable really but dont know what to do really the whold uni thing scares me already and its only been 3 months since AS started , any tips? I take bio chem and psychology , is it bad to have one non facilitating subject? Whenever i tell ppl i take psych they think i am crazy lol and i feel like taking maths would have been a better option and unis do prefer it ,thoughts? Btw what if i change career goals or uni course idea by A2 what do i do then 😣😣 i am not sure but uni seems kinda expensive so germany was my best bet but the requirements are weird smh

Also be sure to bear in mind the jump from GCSE to A Level. History and Maths (in my experience) are a giant jump, so make sure you don't just select subjects that you are good at, make sure you'll also be ready to put in the work! If you dislike a subject now, it's probably not the best idea to do it at A Level. And if you start Year 12 and find a subject isn't for you, you can normally switch stuff around at the start of the year anyway.

I want to study law and I know it's a popular choice at uni so here are my tips: - law is already really competitive so don't feel pressured to go for a really prestigious uni! - you DO NOT need a-level law! some universities prefer it but ideally go for three subjects you are GOOD at. - combinations! i do history, philosophy, english and physics and am planning on dropping physics next year! - essay subjects are god-level - have fun!

I'm taking A-levels in French, English Literature, and Chemistry, and an AS level in Maths to support the Chemistry. A slightly weird combination, but I just chose the subjects I loved. I would encourage anyone who's considering mixing Arts and Science subjects to go for it, as it gives you a diverse UCAS application and can offer a reprieve from your majority category - although you should be aware the learning style is very different in these subjects. As always, thank you for the video! I'm an aspiring Oxbridge applicant, and would need A*, A, A for the course I want to do, and your videos really help motivate me to revise!

Aw man you guys and gals in the U.K. are lucky. In Singapore, I literally had 1 day to decide my subject combination for A' levels when I was in J1 (equivalent to year 11, I think?)... We only have the choices of "facilitating subjects" and we don't have stuff like psychology and drama here. 😂 (at least in my school) From my experience, do take subjects that is essential for your career and 1-2 subjects that you like. It'll keep you sane in school, trust.

I'm in Y12, wanting to change all of my A-levels from English Lit, Sociology and Philosophy to: Physics, Maths and Chemistry. This means restarting Y12 and resitting GCSE maths. My school strongly advised against this (understandably), but I decide my future, and I have always wanted to do Aerospace engineering in an apprenticeship after Y13. How did this happen? Firstly, I chose English etc. because I did not meet the Maths grade needed to take science. Unfortunately, I did not distribute revision time evenly with the sciences and Maths. I had a natural aptitude for Maths, so i thought I could get on fine. I thought that I could somehow force myself to love English, Sociology and Philosophy and that I would end up doing Law in university. But, I hated the essay dense homework, although I am a hard worker- it's just not my passion. So, yeah. I screwed up. But can my sixth-form really force me to continue with my current A-levels? I'd be incredibly unhappy with my future job! Stay safe everyone! :)

Zainab S ucas is the easiest ... you skwl may give you ur username or password but if they don't just register yourself ..... and then you just make one application and from that website you can apply to colleges with only that and you don't have to make separate ones

Thank you for this. I am not planning to go to universe in the UK but if I did I might want to get into a competitive Uni. My A level options I wanna do are Philosophy, Maths, Drama and theater studies and either English Literature or Business studies. The only reason I would be doing English Literature is because its a 'facilitsting' subject however, Business studies makes more sense with the possible career path i want to take. I will try to change it into Business studies as I know I will be much happier but the class are now full and I might be in the waiting list but this made me more confident with my decision. So thank you and congrats on your acceptance.

I wish I could quit some classes but sadly that's not how it works... (To get an idea of my subjects I can't fail on: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, French, English and German. I have some other subjects but those aren't as imporant) xxx

I’m seventeen years old by now and I have to decide what I want to do in my future or at least what kind of job I want to head. Apparently some of my relatives take this decision of mine quite serious and love to discuss which professions may be suitable for me. Actually I wasn’t always good at math. In secondary school I didn’t always pay attention in classes and didn’t take homework and exams very serious. As a result, my results were sufficient, but not very high. But that changed. My father helped me filling all my lacks of knowledge, I studied hard and for three years by now I have very high grades and with the time it becomes even easier for me. By now, I’m the best in my class and in my school, even though I have to admit that I still study for math. Sometimes I have to go through certain topics step by step to deeply understand them, but after I’ve done that, I really understand them and mostly manage to solve even kind of more difficult problems. I also have always done well at logical thinking. And by the way I really do enjoy math and don’t know what to do as an alternative, except for economics, what most of my relatives think I should do, because it’s not very hard. However, my relatives haven’t forgot the “bad times”, aka when I had some struggles. Therefore they think I am not capable of taking math for A-levels and even less they think I would manage to do a future job with a lot of math, physics or technique. Moreover some of them, especially my grandmother, feel strongly that a women can’t achieve leading positions and shouldn’t aim to do a technical/mathematical job because it is to hard. The fact that I haven’t always done well at math doesn’t make it any better. Besides, my dad’s told me that he doesn’t think I’ll manage it and that he won’t and don’t want to “pull” me through it. I really don’t know what to do. Thanks for any kind of help.

@aminahkhalid21057 жыл бұрын
honestly for all those year 11 out there u dont need to be stressed about A levels u have time to stress about A levels after you finished your exams.This is just going to make u emotional depressed don't let this affect your exams revise for ur exams as much as u can and then choose a levels,ik this is hard to choose what you want to do but at the end of the day u will figure it out and plus u can still change ur A levels during the first month.I know people who are still figuring out what they wanna do,it never to late.

A word of advice about facilitating subjects, while I completely agree that facilitating subjects in the most part are favourable and a great guide for a lot of people choosing A-levels, personally taking a subject I didn't really want to do because it was a more 'academic' subject was a terrible idea. I took History, Politics, Drama and Chemistry at AS because I thought Chemistry would be seen more favourably than Sociology or Ancient History which would be more related to my degree course but not considered facilitating subjects. I despised Chemistry and resented the fact I took it and despite getting an A* at GCSE I got a D at AS because my heart wasn't in it. When I dropped it and took one facilitating and two non-facilitating subjects for A-level none of my universities (all top 10 Russell group universities) had an issue with it and I got AAA in subjects that I genuinely enjoyed and cared about. I'm by no means saying that you shouldn't take facilitating subjects but don't make the mistake I made and feel pressured into taking a subject you were good at in GCSE but you don't really enjoy. For humanities at least most prestigious universities don't mind if your subjects aren't all traditionally academic as long as you show passion for your course in your personal statement and interviews and have a good academic record. Follow your heart with your A-level choices not necessarily your mind because a lot of the time your love of the subjects will pay off in your results :-)

! Btw how did math go? I feel like switching from psychology to math , i do the cie board. What do u think? My other subs are bio and chem. My mom said its better to take maths instead of psycho but i dont want to find myself in a messy situation 😂😣😣 will psychology limit options for uni? Should i take maths instead? Thoughts?

I think you're lucky in the UK to get to cut out unwanted subjets so early (year 12?). As a norwegian in year 13, I have to take norwegian and get between 4 and 6 marks in it that count towards the gpa that universities look at. And it's soo boring. I literally have a test in eleven hours on realism and naturalism in Norway in the 1850s-1890s and I could not have cared less about any of it. Oh how I wish I got to cut out Norwegian and just take 3 subjects that I actually like..

Noridu it isn't all brilliant, most of us wish we had GPA as we are put under a lot of pressure to choose.

I've narrowed it down to a few but I've gotten myself into a mess I've got Physics, Maths, Computer science, Biology and Graphics design BUT the ones I actually enjoy are CompSci, Bio and Graphics. Maths and physics i don't think i'll enjoy but necessary if i want to go into uni for courses i like. I don't think the 3 subjects I like will get me anywhere as I don't want a career in medicine and that's my only facilitating subject and If i want to go for CompSci and engineering related courses in uni, I'm gonna have to do maths and physics.

The "facilitating subject" info is useful because when I picked my A levels, I didn't know or even really think about that. When I handed in my form to the headteacher, she made a comment on how all the subjects I picked would be favoured by universities and I was just like "oh ok nice!"

Oh my God! You literally predicted my situation with taking Chemistry! My parents want me to be a doctor, but I am strongly unsure if I want to..
