I have been meditating since 1970 (learned TM at 13, then moved to many other forms of meditation including in 45 years of martial arts practice.) I am not religious, and I do not need any connection to a God or power source. I use meditation to keep myself centered, creative (I'm a poet/playwright/composer,) and overall healthy. I have had 1 mantra since my TM years, and never had a need for another as I only use it for focus. I also focus on my breathing, etc. No connection to religion or belief in a deity is necessary, although if that is what a person needs, no problem there either.

Earlier today I was talking over the phone to someone who teaches TM and after I found out she charges $900 asked her if there were any good books she'd recommend. She replied TM can only be learned in person. I thought this odd. Started researching it and found a bunch of people saying these teachers rip you off to give you your "secret" mantra. I'm brand new to all this so when I see a title like that (haven't watched the video yet) makes me think you don't need an "expert" to give you your mantra. Or do you?
@3tpath
@3tpath 4 жыл бұрын
That's exactly right, you certainly don't need to pay someone just to give you a mantra or teach you how to meditate. You should, however, study more and understand more the tradition as a whole, so that your meditation is not "unanchored" from a deeper spiritual understanding and practice. I would strongly recommend you study the two yoga classics, Bhagavad-gita and Yoga Sutras.

I believe the best you can do, it's to find any word/sound that has no meaning for you, (you can create one yourself) it would stop the mind to create associations, visualisations, memories, etc. The fact that you wish 'to go for the sorce of all' its another trick and demand of the mind, that 'want, choose, analyse, judge, etc.'
@3tpath

@@vita4017 The fact that you wish to drink liquids or consume food is not a trick of the mind, for there is a real need for you to do that in order to live. Similarly, the need to find the source is not an artificial need, but a natural and healthy spiritual necessity. No mantra will bring you money. Money is governed by the law of karma. You can live a life in dharma which will grant you money and other blessings in the future. And you can chant the Hare Krishna mantra and ask for God to intervene in your karma now, but that is unlikely to work. What would change your life, however, and is under your full power, is to change your mindset. That I can help you with. I first received my mantra about seven years ago via Transcendental Meditation (tm). That day I was asked what I wanted from my meditation and I just wanted to be more creative in my art work and painting and was given a mantra which kind of sounds like kirenge. It’s only recently I’ve been questioning my mantra and wondering is this a mantra I stick with for life or do I seek a new one now I’ve changed as a person, my needs being different and if so where do I find my next one. Thanks for this video as it’s allowed me to question the way forward.

@@ToddLiles Good question. Not much, I'd say. Krishna explains in the Gita that we need knowledge for a spiritual process to really work. So, reciting the name of a minor deity without even being aware that you're doing so will basically only get you the physiological benefits of meditation. However, there are a number of verses stating that when you're chanting a "holy name of the Lord", then even without being aware of it, you're accumulating spiritual benefits. I thought the point of a mantra was that it NOT have specific association? Not meaning/referemce but sound is efficacious. You are speaking as if it is an invocation, rather than a vehicle to transcendence. The benefit of meditation is not union but going beyond the disjunction "union/disunion".

It is widely recognized as the most powerful of all mantras in the yoga tradition. The first word, Hare, is an invocation to Radha, the feminine aspect of God. Krishna is a name of God meaning “the all-attractive.” And Rama, another holy name, means “the source of bliss.” These are the three sacred sounds of the maha-mantra. I think failing to mention that you're coming from a specific denominational perspective (namely, Vaishnavism) is a bit sketchy. There are practitioners of Vedanta who regard Shiva as the Supreme God (Mahadeva), not to mention the Advaita tradition which regards the ultimate as nirguna (or without form or attributes). The path of Vaishnav bhakti is beautiful and brings one to God realization, but the Vedic tradition is much, *much* broader than that.

Not to confuse but just to reflect that in another tradition (namely Judaism) from another time the name for the highest was never even spoken directly and in fact nothing, it was said, could be said about "His" attributes, only about what He was not! Compassion brothers and sisters is something sorely lacking and something we all desperately need however, in whatever way we can find it, for ourselves, for each other for anyone. That is truth. Strong confidence and assertiveness is certainly good. But so often it is used for ego purposes rather than for the sake of others. The reason is that strong assertion of ego blocks others out from consideration. Their suffering, certainky very strong suffering, is seen as a distraction from one's "true purposes" such as knowing God! Ego really is pure delusion. It blocks us from seeing how things really are. For a while we soar above. But sooner or later we tire of it all as we have to keep on and on and on boosting the ego.

Of course. For a life without God, you have the material Universes. If you want to go beyond matter, than you need to develop your relationship with God. It's a simple concept and it's a core instruction of the Bhagavad-gita, which is what I'm teaching in this channel. This is not a channel about New Age spirituality, which seems to be what you're thinking of. The issue here is that you're confusing "spiritual" with some other mental state of peace, compassion or other commendable qualities which is a New Age concept. Different philosophy to yoga. Spiritual is all that PLUS God realization in the yoga path. In yoga, the state of mind you're thinking of is "sattva". Which is wonderful, full of happiness, but still mundane and technically not spiritual.

If you want to worship Lord Krsna, it's your choice. But don't call other Hindu God's Demi God's. Like how you are telling people what mantra to choose, I advise you to choose your words better. 🙏

It's not my categorization. There is God and there are demigods. Demigods are souls like you and me that currently hold positions of power in the Universe, such as the Sun God, Surya, or the God of Rain and Thunder, Indra. Then there is Iswara, God Almighty. These are two distinct classes.

3:46 the reason I am not interested in worshiping your god, is that it is basically like worshiping thor or odin. I mean what's the deal with that elephant looking guy you call god?

That's Ganesha and he's not my God. God is one. There is but one God. And He's more than odin or thor, who are demigods. The point is though, wouldn't it be interesting to really understand who God is? Wouldn't it be better to make a decision about God AFTER studying the subject correctly? In your experience, do you see people making good decisions without understanding the choices at hand, or after thoroughly doing so? In one short question, you confuse Ganesha, who might just be a mythological character, with Odin and Thor, who are nature gods (demigods), with the concept of a transcendental Supreme God. That shows you need to study a lot more before making an informed decision about your spiritual life.

*Mantras work when the spiritual master is present. *Find me people that practice mantra recitation that are very spiritual, there aren't many. *You can use AUM, you will be disappointed if you pay someone for a mantra. *I've been in the presence of a spiritual master that belongs to higher "Ashram" That their body can take on a different color hue.

I know many. The guru need not be present. You will not find a single verse stating the need for the presence of the guru. The importance of the guru is in giving you the mantra, which is a practical matter, and explaining the meaning, etc.

@@3tpath The danger I see is when people start repeating mantras and they start singing the same songs everyday because someone or others reached some spiritual high. The mind vibrating the same mantra and songs, will give you the result of the group. Good or bad.

@@Gr8Success The beauty of it is that it's the sound and the repetition which works on the neurological level. So, the fact that it reportedly has "spiritual benefits" is just a bonus. It takes nothing away from the health benefits and it's there working on some other level. Nothing to lose, everything to be gained. But, no, yoga was always a spiritual practice so all the different forms of mantra meditation have a connection with transcendence.
