I have been meditating since 1970 (learned TM at 13, then moved to many other forms of meditation including in 45 years of martial arts practice.) I am not religious, and I do not need any connection to a God or power source. I use meditation to keep myself centered, creative (I'm a poet/playwright/composer,) and overall healthy. I have had 1 mantra since my TM years, and never had a need for another as I only use it for focus. I also focus on my breathing, etc. No connection to religion or belief in a deity is necessary, although if that is what a person needs, no problem there either.

Earlier today I was talking over the phone to someone who teaches TM and after I found out she charges $900 asked her if there were any good books she'd recommend. She replied TM can only be learned in person. I thought this odd. Started researching it and found a bunch of people saying these teachers rip you off to give you your "secret" mantra. I'm brand new to all this so when I see a title like that (haven't watched the video yet) makes me think you don't need an "expert" to give you your mantra. Or do you?
@3tpath4 жыл бұрын
That's exactly right, you certainly don't need to pay someone just to give you a mantra or teach you how to meditate. You should, however, study more and understand more the tradition as a whole, so that your meditation is not "unanchored" from a deeper spiritual understanding and practice. I would strongly recommend you study the two yoga classics, Bhagavad-gita and Yoga Sutras.

Krishna is a name of God meaning “the all-attractive.” And Rama, another holy name, means “the source of bliss.” These are the three sacred sounds of the maha-mantra. The path of Vaishnav bhakti is beautiful and brings one to God realization, but the Vedic tradition is much, *much* broader than that.

Not to confuse but just to reflect that in another tradition (namely Judaism) from another time the name for the highest was never even spoken directly and in fact nothing, it was said, could be said about "His" attributes, only about what He was not! Compassion brothers and sisters is something sorely lacking and something we all desperately need however, in whatever way we can find it, for ourselves, for each other for anyone. That is truth. Strong confidence and assertiveness is certainly good. But so often it is used for ego purposes rather than for the sake of others. The reason is that strong assertion of ego blocks others out from consideration. Their suffering, certainky very strong suffering, is seen as a distraction from one's "true purposes" such as knowing God! Ego really is pure delusion. It blocks us from seeing how things really are. For a while we soar above. But sooner or later we tire of it all as we have to keep on and on and on boosting the ego.

Of course. For a life without God, you have the material Universes. If you want to go beyond matter, than you need to develop your relationship with God. It's a simple concept and it's a core instruction of the Bhagavad-gita, which is what I'm teaching in this channel. This is not a channel about New Age spirituality, which seems to be what you're thinking of. The issue here is that you're confusing "spiritual" with some other mental state of peace, compassion or other commendable qualities which is a New Age concept. Different philosophy to yoga. Spiritual is all that PLUS God realization in the yoga path. In yoga, the state of mind you're thinking of is "sattva". Which is wonderful, full of happiness, but still mundane and technically not spiritual.

In your experience, do you see people making good decisions without understanding the choices at hand, or after thoroughly doing so? In one short question, you confuse Ganesha, who might just be a mythological character, with Odin and Thor, who are nature gods (demigods), with the concept of a transcendental Supreme God.
