Please read this comment for Specific speciality details ! Credits to the contributors ... 1.) For Psychiatry By - Nikhita Kulkarni | February 3 | Copied from Facebook For those who are interested in psychiatry these are a few points regarding the branch from my perspective.This is with respect to the post graduation period since I am an 8 month old resident in the field. Regarding future employment,career prospects kindly try to talk to those who have finished/are practicing. 1.We all have very little exposure to psychiatry during UG and we don't know much about it.During PG, you get to interact with a wide variety of patients ranging from issues like substance abuse,depression to schizophrenia,obsessive compulsive disorders so on and so forth.Every patient is different and you develop insight into the science of human behavior. 2.Working hours and duties- It is not a physically intensive branch like the surgical ones with 48hour shifts.However also depends on where you join-mental hospital setup or a general hospital setting and the patient load. I'm working in a mental hospital setup with 24 pgs in all.So opds and duties are relatively hectic where i get duties twice or thrice a month. 3. Is it the same as psychology? NO.Psychology is an arts specialty requiring you to do B.A and M.A in psychology. Psychiatry is a MEDICAL SPECIALTY and just like any other specialty we have specific signs,symptoms,treatment guidelines,drugs and practice EVIDENCE BASED medicine.A thorough medical knowledge is required. 4. Are there any prerequisites for the branch? If you ask me,except an interest and liking of the subject nothing else(which you would have an idea by now as to which subjects you absolutely love,like,can do and absolutely not do) However if you're someone who DOES NOT LIKE any form of HUMAN INTERACTION, psychiatry might not be the best choice. Does one need a lot of patience,good communication skills,listening ability? All doctors have to have these skills.I say skills and not qualities because THEY CAN BE DEVELOPED,HONED and BETTERED.A surgeon also needs infinite amounts of patience to be able to function optimally given the long hours of operating and have good communication skills to convince a patient for major surgeries,take consent,explain the risks etc. 5. Stigma attached.Its getting better by the day as awareness is increasing.Surprisingly,the stigma and hesitancy to see a psychiatrist is a lot even among medical graduates and other medical specialists. Mental disorders contribute to 13% of the Global DALYS and is the third biggest contributor after cardiovascular diseases and infections.Depression among mental disorders contributes the maximum and the morbidity due to these disorders is quite large. And being able to treat this and see a change in not only the patient's life but their caregivers as well is quite satisfying. 6. Language barrier.Yes language is important as we need to understand what the patient is saying to be able to understand their symptoms. However it's not hard if you're up for learning a new language which will be a life asset.I was in the same situation and could pick up the new language with a little bit of work and the help of all my colleagues and hospital staff.Definitely not an impossible task. 7.Order of colleges-You can prioritize based on patient load,how big the department is,bond,safety in the city,accessibility to your hometown.Try to ask the pgs there to get an idea(The priority list is a personal decision based on above factors as this is what I followed). Hope this helps. All the best! -------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. For SURGERY By - Atanu Sengupta | February 11 | Copied From Facebook Hi guys. I am a surgery resident. Let me talk a bit about surgery as a career choice... Pros: 1) it's absolutely thrilling. You will be in control. If u r ambitious and cool headed, you will love the thrill of surgery. 2) its highly rewarding financially. 3) you are irreplaceable. Post Mch, even corporate salaries ( remember corporate starts u in a small salary) are close to 3lakh per month in average Mch subjects. For Mch in urology, neurosurgery sky its more than what you will hope for :p 4) its an evergreen line. Be good at what you do, and you will never need to worry about saturation. 5) if you own or can think about having your own setup in future, surgery is the best option to choose if you think about return on your investment Cons: 1) you have to be motivated. Surgery is not for the weak hearts, or for someone who is not focused enough. Long working hours will kill you specially in your first year of residency. 2) you need to have stable hands. Your attitude has to be cool headed, calm and chilled out. Panicking will ruin you. 3) be prepared for mch. However the good thing is, competition is less for mch as compared to dm. Surgeons aren't that studious :p.. Mch entrance is actually easier than neet pg 4) a lot will depend on which college you choose for residency. 5) you will encounter a lot of bullies along your path. Very few people are actually willing to teach and let you hold the scalpel in the initial stages. Learning curve is steep. So to summarize if you are ambitious, you want a certain standard of life and you are willing to work hard in the initial years, go with surgery. You will not regret it. For those who have doubts, bring them on in this thread. Welcome to the game. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.) For MICROBIOLOGY By - Dr Md Khaleel, Professor Microbiology Deccan college of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad. Career prospects and Scope of MD Microbiology # Pros: Microbiology has definitely revolutionalized the outlook today adding great adjuvant to Clinicians in Hospital setup,it has drifted from bench side thitical care medicine for healthcare delivery It has made a benchmark in terms of Hospital infection control and Prevention with team leader in the committee Infectious disease is another area where they are the torch bearers and update in outbreaks,investigations point of care diagnostics with such automation has really been of great help to patient care and need of hour Cons: Though its a dry subject,it can be strategically planned to settled down in life as a career The learning teaching in Medical Colleges have to be more competent involving early applied Microbiology aspects So if teaching is your passion you can opt for this speciality if u have good skills updated If ur interested in diagnostic field and research you can go ahead Clinical Microbiology has again come in limelight because of increase of Antimicrobial drug resistance and to curb it ,we are designated people to design the Antibiotic policy and leaders of Antibiotic steward ship _____________________________________________ --------------------------------------------------------------------------

@ Sir...I have already left a seat in MD Radiation Oncology after trying to adjust for 6months. Like you said in this video...It's ok to not like a branch and don't be too harsh about it. Anyways...I always liked Psychiatry and still want to persue it. But this Neet rank has left me bit confused...whether I should take up any branch other than psychiatry...I also like Dermatology but Psychiatry is my first choice. Now after leaving a seat once before..I am.scared to take a chance with another subject and then not liking it. The Mopup round for deemed is confusing me as I can't think of leaving a seat paying so much money.

Good evening sir .Another great video, you have very nicely explained all the variables.. If you remember in your 'getting exam ready' video i told you in comments dat i hv given around 20 pg entrance exams in last 5 years of struggling, finally i got a decent rank this year, much thanx to you for making me EXAM READY.. I will be getting my branch (which i am passionate about) i.e. General Medicine, this year.. I have only one confusion, as you can imagine i m not that young anymore after 5-6 years of preparation, so if i want to do subspeciality after MD it will be too late, i will be in mid thirties. So should i take a terminal branch like Psychiatry(which i also like) ?? Is increasing age should affect my branch of choice? P. S.. - I would like to say one more thing your voice is more soothing than arijit singh songs..

Sir it's good to motivate girls to take whatever branch they want irrespective of society's opinion and demands of family; but even if my family is supportive, my biology is still different from my male counterparts isn't it? There's an appropriate age for childbirth after which the risks increase. It's a tougher decision for us, because even if all the sexism and expectations go away (they never do), the biological truth will always remain. At 23-24 we can't very accurately predict what we'll want at 28. It's scary.

@nikitaranjan44985 жыл бұрын
Sir I'm a bit too worried about the bond service in various states. Like it's a rural posting..and the duration is 3 yrs , 5 yrs even 10 in Assam. So this adds to delay in career.. right. Like you won't be posted in well equipped hospitals most of the times. And most complicated cases that you might have dealt in your pg training time...you would be forced to refer.. probably coz of lack of manpower or facilities at the health center. So you would be dealing with a limited nmbr of cases..less variety. Specially for a surgical branch..this slow phase won't be very helpful. And in case you want to do senior residency.. teaching in colleges you would be left behind. How much should this matter sir....I need some outlook to take this in a positive manner. Plz help me

SHOULD I TAKE UP MS ORTHOPAEDICS Being a FEMALE IF I GET IT IN MY STATE COUNSELLING???? I am going to be in my 30s by next yr, and i cant try again for another year. I passionately want a surgical branch, so should i take it? HOW IS IT AS A CAREER FOR WOMEN?? The pros n Cons.. Plz sir. Its a sincere request to you to enlighten me.

Thank you so much sir... I've never seen anyone who puts himself in the place of a student every single time for an advice or suggestion and it's obviously not an easy thing to do... Thank you so much sir for your effort in making this video amidst all your busy and hectic personal and professional life... I can feel your tension to put everything into such a small span of 14.30 mins... P.S: Sir you look really very drained... Take care sir... We all love you

Should one choose surgery if he has a history of epilepsy during his childhood.....and is it true that surgeons have to flatter their seniors every now and then.... because I am interested in surgery.....but I am kind of rough guy who doesn't like to be treated like a minion..... please do reply sir.... thank you

Great video sir You make things very simple and clear be it either the subject or other important issues :) At my rank I will probably get ophthalmology, psychiatry and anesthesia... But I have strong inclination towards forensic medicine... Can u please suggest what should I choose because this sounds to be a off centre choice regarding career as well as family/social aspect :(
@Boneteacher5 жыл бұрын
If you have an inclination for FM I suggest you talk to people already working in the field I can imagine for it to be hard for a female interms of family and social aspect when it comes to working /.. otherwise teaching is an option ... other branches are just fine
