Me too. My daughter's 8 and I'm a single mom. Honestly I did not want it because I was afraid I would not be able to care for it properly. Day three of having it I spent 4 hours trying to figure out why it stayed by the filter. I went and bought a heater but no thermometer so I spent the next 48 hours wondering if the heater was working. It's been one month and my beta was active 2 days ago and now it is by the filter not moving. It either sleeps while I'm awake or something is wrong. Much to my surprise, I worry about this fish as if it is an infant. Because it was active 48 hours ago, I am headed to the fish store to test the water that I know has to be cleaned. Now I'm freaking out and scared that it's going to die before I get to clean it tonight. This is why I did not want a pet. My daughter just says hi to it. However, I have spent hours just listening to what's normal and what's not normal. Since he acts normal sometimes it's really hard for me to tell. So I got to buy it thermometer to make sure the heater still working. Change out the filter and water. It's not birthday and I'm about to spend all of my birthday money caring for a fish because somehow I have become attached and wanted to be happy. I have acute anxiety disorder so this is extremely stressful. I don't remember doing anything to my beta I had as a teenager and it lived 3 years. I thought you changed the water monthly and he's been in there for a month and the water was in there for a month before he came home. Am I horrible fish mom? I'm asking because I keep being told that it could just be the fish, but if something happens to this fish I don't want another one if I have to worry this much. They gave me like five reasons why my fish could be doing this with one of them being dead so now I have shook the water and he's alive but I don't know if I'm just bothering him now. Sorry so long but this is the only place I can talk about my fish problems! 😔

@@brandiwatson7628 i mean like yeah he's basicly suffocating in nitrates because you havent cleaned the water in a month and the tank probaly isnt cycled based on how u said u take care of ur fish so hes probaly drowning in ammonia and nitrites too. You gotta do your research before getting a LIVING thing. You are basicly making him breathe poison and tourturing him. He is most likely by the filter because hes trying to get cleaner water.

Great tip, I always use big jug that's sole purpose is for water changes. I fill it up with warm tap water, add my chlorine treatment, drop in an air stone and heater and I let it sit a few hours before using. This way I'm always adding oxygenated, fresh and properly heated water. I have a stick on tank temperature in the jug as a last minute referral before I drop in the water, this way I can have another visual check the water is the perfect temperature. I never would think of using the "poop' water bucket for adding water back. In addition, I maintain multiple tanks, so you could contaminate another tank with parasites and bacteria from a different tank. I also use a different siphon tube on each tank

I'm a newbie, but this might be useful for other newbies: I got one of those aquarium hoses that comes with a bulb you can just squeeze a couple times to start the water siphoning through the hose. Especially useful for a smaller tank. Mine might be the Tetra "Water Cleaner," but the "siphon starter" bulbs are sold by various brands separately, to fit a hose you already have.

Do you mix fertilizer with conditioner or do you add it in at a certain time? I still have plenty of questions, but I'll save them for another video.

@kyehills13823 жыл бұрын
Good clear instructions for newbies. for educational purposes for individuals that read this. 1 all aquariums are eco systems. once that tank has cycled you should never pull apart the aquarium to clean. syphoning the gravel to remove debris/un eaten food is perfect. scrubbing rocks and cleaning out the entire tank out will only destroy the ecosystem you have created. 2 when choosing a suitable tank, one needs to consider the net volume over the gross. 3.5 gallons will not be 3.5 gallons once substrate and decorations have been added. These bring the water volume down. An optimal tank size in net volume for bettas is 20Litres minimum. The more water volume you have the more dilution. 3 long tailed bettas prefer longer tanks over height, due to their fins they can tire easy. Bettas must be able to get to the surface to breathe air. More real estate you can give your betta the easier to is to create the perfect aquatic home.

I do small frequent water changes (x3 betta tanks): 10% every two days. I clean the substrate and trim plants as needed, filter cleaned once a month. It really helped the plants grow in addition to ferts! I am not sure I'll keep that schedule forever, even though it's really fast since I prepare the new water in advance. For now I am happy with the results and the fish aren't bothered since it's super fast 👍

What I mean is: I have a 5-gallon tank. If I replace 50% of the water, should I add "5-gallon"s worth of dechlorinator, or just "2.5-gallon"s worth?

I got a 6 gallon tank along with my first ever Beta Fish back in March. I scrubbed the gravel one time but it was super time consuming so I’d do regular water changes instead and apparently that was fine since he’s still alive and still has his beautiful gorgeous fins and has never showed any signs of fin rot or any other fish related diseases like ammonia poisoning or ick. But I knew I was really slacking slacking on cleaning the tank as well as I should be doing and I felt Finsley deserved better and I bought a gravel vacuum to help make the process easier and omg.. I’m not kidding when I tell you I siphoned out the gravel for almost 3 hours and it still wasn’t completely clean. A normally 10-20 minute process took me three hours.. How my Beta is actually healthy and not dead yet I don’t know but I’m never going to go that long without cleaning ever again 😬 That gravel is going to be cleaned at least once every week from now on.. On the bright side Finsley seems happy with his newly clean tank and started making bubble nests.

No need to! I find the fish are more stressed out when I remove them from the tank, than when I slowly vacuum around them. If you ever accidentally vacuum up your fish, just kink the siphon hose with your other hand (that's not inside the tank) and the flow will immediately stop and give your fish time to swim out. :)

I love your videos! Just a note that your aquascaping tool link goes to an anti barking device :)

Where can I get that water siphon from? We just had our first betta fish pass away so next one has to be done right.

How do you cycle your beta tanks? How often do you change the filter? And when you do how do you keep good bacteria?
@GirlTalksFish5 жыл бұрын
Great questions! So I personally cycled my betta's tank by removing some old filter media from another aquarium I had, and then putting it in his new aquarium. That way it already came seeded with a ton of beneficial bacteria. I do not change my filter media, but I just clean it in old aquarium water like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWS5h5KZa552r7M. Squeezing or swishing around the filter media will remove the excess detritus/mulm, but doesn't wash away most of the good bacteria. Hope that helps!
