I've been in business for almost 7 years and European Mounts are all I do. I can get a deer done in about 45 minutes. That's skinning boiling and whitening. Please don't spray paint your skulls use 40 volume developer from the beauty supply it's a 50/50 mix and all you do is bring it to a boil shut the heat off and it will be brilliant white Everytime. Also take the auditory bollas out to get the hidden meat behind there out and it's a lot easier to get the brain out that way as well. The initial boil should only take about 30 mins or the bone will become brittle. Love the video though I just thought I'd leave some constructive criticism for ya

Thank you for the info and opinion. The whole point of these videos is to help someone out. I have tried the salon peroxide several times and me personally the mat or flat finish paint looks pretty good to me. I have several that are natural bone two that are salon peroxide and about 10 that are painted. You can’t hardly tell the difference in the painted and peroxide. I have never pulled the ear pieces out but I will try that to see how it works. Anything to get that brain out is a plus. Lol. I will try your method the next skull I do. If it works out good I will do a video on it also and of course give you props for it. Your more than welcome to leave detailed instructions here on how you do it and people can try it. Thanks again for the pointers and criticism. Thanks for watching.

Also, just a helpful tip… I had a buck that was very nice, but I just couldn’t afford another full mount, let alone space for the mount. SO, if you know off the bat that you are doing a Euro, call your local taxidermist and offer for them to keep the cape for someone else. The cape doesn’t go to waste and someone gets their deer mounted when a coyote or something else has destroyed their cape before they could get to it. It saves you the work of taking the cape off as well. Mine even gave me $20 for it.

Might i add that different methods works , alot of it is what region of the country the deer is from. Northern deer have bigger thicker skulls than Southern deer, thus you can boil a northern skull harder than a Southern deer, age of the skull determines that also. Ive been doing skulls for 5yrs now and i boil 30 minutes, pressure wash, then boil slowly 15-20 minutes. I do use OxyClean or Dawn's. The toughest thing for me is the holes above the teeth that run the lenght of the last tooth, the meat in that canals gives me problems.. best advise is do whats best for you..

You are correct. Everybody does it differant and that’s a great comparison about northern deer verses southern deer. I have done one with a pressure washer but I will be doing that on one of the next deer I do. Thanks you for commenting and watching. Also thanks for sharing.

These are actually pseudo-euro mounts. Real euro mounts have the base of the skull cut at an angle so as to facilitate mounting on a carved wooden plaque. Best to use dishwasher pellet in boiling water to help loosen flesh and degrease the bone. Use real peroxide to whiten. Then don’t put anything on it after bleaching. UV light will yellow coatings.

I set my burner on medium to high. I set the pot on with the oxi clean and then set the skull in. Bring it to a good boil. Then cut it back to medium to low and let it simmer for about 2 hours. Leave the pot boiling take the skull out and shake it real good to get the brain and loose meat off. Take a strong water hose and wash it good. If there’s still meat on it, top your water back off in your pot and boil it fit another hour. I hope this helps. Let me know how it turns out and thanks for watching.

Question for the boiling process, how long do you boil the head exactly once you start to boil it? Do you boil it for an hour then change the water out and do it all over again ? And how hot does the water have to be exactly? I’ve never done one before
@pineylife
@pineylife Жыл бұрын
Once its to boiling point I add the oxi clean and it usually takes about 2 hours. I have found that taking it out after a 2 hour boil you can scrap off the left over pieces of meat and tissue then wash it with a water hose and sprayer. If you still have some meat that's hard and wont scrape off then use fresh water and bring it boil and add you skull for about another hour. Now on the temp. I usually put my on high and then when it gets to a boil back it off to about 3/4. so halfway between medium and high for the last hr

If the skull has the stains I would bring it to a boil with the oxi clean and then simmer for a hour or so. Check on it periodically to make sure the skulls not getting soft. That oxi clean will get inside the brain cavity and help remove the oil or grease stain from the rotting process. option two is you cant go wrong with the sun bleaching it. If the antlers are discolored or turning white you can always bring them back to life with a little bit of stain. If the antlers still have there color wrap them up with a shirt or some kinda of covering that the sun can’t get through but leave the skull exposed. Place it up high where no animals can get it and let the sun do the bleaching.. hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else and let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching watching

When boiling your deer skulls have you ever lost any of the teeth? I did one that I let sit too long and just boiled the head hide still on and all and when i pulled it out it had two top teeth missing same tooth on both sides. I'm not sure if they fell out while boiling or were missing to start out with. And if i do find them what is the best way to replace them?
@pineylife
@pineylife 4 жыл бұрын
Yes i have done that several times. All i do is use super glue and glue them back in. They usually are pretty easy to get back in place. make sure you have the right tooth for the right hole then slide it back in place to make sure it fits and there's no obstruction. Then pull it back out and put a couple drops of super glue and replace the tooth with skull upside down. Let it dry and you should be good to go. Let me know how it goes and thank you for watching.

That has happened to me plenty of times.. I haven't actually lost them but I have had them fall out. I did a European mount on a bull moose a friend of mine shot in Vermont. A lot of the teeth were loose when I was done boiling it so I carefully glued them all back in with super glue.

@@pineylife I take the brains and eyes out. Leave all the meat on. Boil for minimum 2 hours. The meat all pulls right off. By leaving all the meat on it tightens to itself and easily separates from the skull. By taking the eyes and brains out it will boil from inside also. Bleaching I use 35% hydrogen peroxide. Let soak fo 1/2 hour. Comes out super white. Need to get that directly from a chemical distributor. This works for me but everyone has their own system that works for them. After 50 years I finally retired. I don't want to see another dead animal unless it is a road kill while I am driving non-stop past it, LOL. Oh yes, and also, as far as getting the scalp off the antlers use a long and thin flat head screwdriver to pry the skin off starting from the top off skull and work your way toward the front and around. When you get the hang of it it takes 5 seconds per antler. Try it. I hope it works for you.

Thank you so much for the info. I have 14 skulls to do. The screwdriver trick and eye removal is the next to try on my list. I actually have removed the eyes before but just didn't take the time to do that the last couple years. Im gonna try the peroxide again. I did several with it years ago and they got real brittle. Once again thanks for the comments and tips.

How long is the initial boiling time?
@pineylife
@pineylife 3 жыл бұрын
Usually 1 hour to 1.5 hours. But I check it periodically during that time and make sure the skulls not softening at the nose bridge and add a little water as it boils and evaporates.

Yes. Usually if I can bring it to a good boil for about 2 hours then a simmer for another two hours it really helps get all that meat soft and it falls right off. Thanks for watching.

A buddy of mine boiled one for me, when he finished there were little tubes running thru the scull to the brain cavity that I had to pick out with a wire. So please let me know if this OXY clean gets all them tubes clean also, or is there still some pick'in to do, or power washing? Thanks for this helpful video.. I also wanted to ask if you ever Put a line of super glue down the top of the noes to hold it together???
@pineylife
@pineylife 3 жыл бұрын
The oxi clean helps but I would not guarantee it will get the tubes all the way clean. But it sure does help more than using dawn dishwashing liquid. There might still be some picking involved. The biggest problem I have is when the water is getting low in a boil there is some meat that’s left on the back of the skull that has to be cut off or scraped but everything else usually comes pretty clean. I don’t pressure wash any skulls after they have been boiled due to maybe being weak from the boil. I have pressure washed them right off before boiling. Does a good job but not as good as the boil. On the nose I have used glue several times. The heat opens it up from the boil. Best thing I have found is to use a wood clamp from Amazon or harbor freight and slightly push it back together. Then glue it and let it sit over night. Let me know if this helps. Also I can get you a link for a clamp like I use if you need it.

How long did you let the head set out? I’ve boiled and done many European mounts but never a frozen one. I have one in the freezer I need to get to
@pineylife
@pineylife 3 жыл бұрын
I actually shot this video during the summer. So it was pretty warm outside but It was in my deer shed with the ac on so it was probably somewhere around 70 degrees. I pulled it out of the freezer after work one afternoon and shot the video the next afternoon after work. So it was about 24 hours. The center of the neck was still a little frozen but it skinned out just fine. Give yours 24 hrs and it should be good.

@pineylife
@pineylife 4 жыл бұрын
It’s probably the brain grease in the skull. Usually I let mine sit out for a couple days outside and it goes away. If it don’t I would put it in clean water in your boiling pot and just a little more oxi clean or dawn dishwashing liquid. Bring it to a boil and then cut it back to simmer for about 2 hrs . That should do it. Let me know how it turns out and thanks for the watching.

Great job . like the idea of using the Oxiclean. in your final shot , is the skull hanging on a treestep or is that a special skull hanger ? thanks , keep up the good work
@pineylife
@pineylife 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. It’s a cheap easy way that I do them. Not professional but they turn out great. The skull is actually hanging on a hanger hook like you would get to hang in a garage. Those are 4 inch long have the red coating on them. I screwed them into a telephone ( utilities) pole that’s in back yard. I hang my skulls to dry on them and I use them to hang my bow on when shooting during the summer in my back yard. They work great. I can attach a link if you need me too. Just let me know and thanks for watching. I also have a video on skull hangers using a banister rail bracket. Check it out also.
